ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is particularly concerning in pregnant women, leading to various health-related issues in mothers and their babies, especially those born prematurely, including neonatal skeletal and respiratory disorders. In addition, there have been several reports indicating the presence of multiple impactful factors in the development of vitamin D deficiency. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the vitamin D level in very preterm and moderately preterm newborns and investigate its association with presumed influential factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 54 mothers and their preterm neonates with gestational ages less than 34 weeks at delivery (i.e., very preterm and moderately preterm). After the serum vitamin D levels were determined from samples obtained in the first 24 h after birth, the babies were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of deficiency. The relationship between several factors and the neonatal serum vitamin D level was investigated separately and in a linear step-wise regression model. RESULTS: The differences between the groups regarding maternal age, gestational age, neonate's gender, birth weight, and delivery method with neonatal vitamin D levels were not statistically significant. However, maternal vitamin D levels strongly correlated with neonatal vitamin D levels (P-value < 0.001, r = 0.636). The regression model also yielded a strong predictive capability (P-value < 0.001, Adjusted R2 = 0.606), with the maternal vitamin D level demonstrating a significant impact. CONCLUSIONS: Low vitamin D levels in pregnant mothers correlate with deficient levels in their preterm neonates. Therefore, as vitamin D deficiency significantly affects both the mother's and newborn's health, it is recommended that healthcare providers provide comprehensive plans for vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine sense of coherence and its relationship with self-construal in parents of children with cancer in southeastern Iran. In this descriptive correlational study, 127 parents of children with cancer were studied using sense of coherence scale (SOC) and self-construal scale (SCS) in Iran. The results of the study showed that total mean score of SOC was 51.4 ± 14.2 and the interdependent self-construal (INT) in parents was higher than independent self-construal (IND). Also, the relationship between SOC and SCS showed that IND had a positive and statistically significant relationship with SOC manageability subscale. The weak SOC in the studied parents can cause more stress and suffering in dealing with their child's disease. It is essential that health care providers provide a comprehensive program to enhance parents' SOC and it should be noted that people who have a more INT felt less able to manage challenging situations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer is a major challenge for parapets. Parents are one of the main sources of emotional support for their child, but their ability to provide proper care during their child's illness and treatment depends entirely on the way they manage to cope with diagnosis and its outcomes. Parents' coping pattern seems to be affected by their perception of themselves or their surroundings. AIM: To investigate parents' coping strategies with childhood cancer and its relation with self-construal. METHODS: A total of 127 eligible parents participated in this descriptive correlational study. RESULTS: Medical, social support, and family strategies were respectively helpful for parents. The interdependent self-construal score was higher than the independent self-construal score. A significant relationship was found between interdependent self-construal and social support (P = .01). DISCUSSION: It seems that individualists and collectivists' cultural context influence the usefulness of coping strategies. These differences should be considered in training of coping strategies.

ABSTRACT

An aqueous solution of Pectinex (containing cellulase, hemicellulase, and pectinase) at 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 7%, and 10% concentrations and 40°C was used to extract anthocyanins (Acys) of saffron tepals at 20, 40, 60, 120 and 180 min reaction times and compared with ethanol solvent under similar conditions. The Acys of the Pectinex solution reached 6.7 mg/g of tepal powder (∼40% more than the ethanol method) when the enzyme concentrations and extraction times were, respectively, 5% and 60 min. The Acys of aqueous enzymes had three times slower degradation rates and 50% more attractive chroma color than the ones recovered by ethanol solution after 3 h of extraction time. Additionally, the Acys of the ethanol solution lost its content sharply (>45%) and its chroma changed quickly (due to the browning and polymerization). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that Acys extracted with mixed enzymes had about 80% more cyanidin 3-glucosides and 20% less pelargonidin 3,5-glucosides than with the ethanol method. Most probably, the high content of cyanidin 3-glycosides in enzyme-extracted Acys of saffron tepals was the key factor for its high stability.

ABSTRACT

Chitosan (Ch), and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL), widely used as biomaterials with desirable properties for tissue engineering applications, were both blended with zinc-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles(nZnHA) and electrospun into nanofibrous scaffolds using formic acid/acetic acid. The rationale behind this study was to demonstrate that presence of small quantities of Zn(2+) ions doped in HA nanoparticles can improve biocompatibility of PCL/Ch blends. SEM observation revealed that average fiber diameter was increased from about 136 nm for a PCL/Ch blend, to around 210 nm for PCL/Ch/nZnHA nanocomposite. PCL/Ch/nZnHA scaffolds offered higher elastic modulus (about 3-fold) and tensile strength (nearly 1.5-fold) than the corresponding PCL/Ch scaffolds. In-vitro biocompatibility studies using human adipose derived stem cells (hAD-MSCs), demonstrated that the presence of only 5 wt% nZnHA in PCL/Ch/nZnHA nanocomposites enhanced hAD-MSCs' attachment compared to PCL/Ch and PCL/Ch/nHA. Finally, hAD-MSCs proliferation occurred at significantly higher rates of 1.5, 1.3 and 1.2 times on PCL/Ch/nZnHA scaffold compared to PCL, PCL/Ch and PCL/Ch/nHA, respectively.
