ABSTRACT

Bromeliads serve as a key environmental resource for Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in some peridomestic landscapes and are not addressed through conventional source reduction. As an alternative, three handheld sprayers were evaluated in point-source applications of permethrin to bromeliads in Saint Augustine, FL. Each machine was screened for its utility in point-source harborage treatments, while we simultaneously evaluated bromeliad-focused treatments for reducing Ae. albopictus egg abundance in bromeliad plants. Semi-field tests against caged Ae. albopictus produced 100% mortality at 24 h with each sprayer. Three field sites were assigned to each machine and a control, and bromeliad residual applications of Aqualuer 20-20® were assessed through egg surveillance using ovitraps both within and beyond 30 m of the treated bromeliad harborage. The treatment decreased Ae. albopictus egg abundance across the field sites for three weeks post-treatment with no significant differences among the equipment. Functional differences among machines, such as automated pressure control or leak guards on the nozzle, depend on the accessories that offer the greatest logistical benefit to the user. The field results suggest bromeliads are a viable target for harborage treatments. Selective treatments to bromeliads could offer a possible solution to containers that homeowners refuse to eliminate.

ABSTRACT

The effect of travel speed of a truck-mounted ultra-low-volume (ULV) sprayer on its application efficacy was studied at St. Johns County Fairground, Elkton, FL, during summer 2015. The efficacy was assessed by spray deposition, droplet size spectrum, and 24-h mortality of caged adult Aedes aegypti, using 2 rows of sampling locations, 15 m apart and spread up to 122 m from the spray. Each location had a bioassay cage and an impinger droplet sampler, 1 m apart from each other, at 1.5 m off the ground. Aqualuer® 20-20 (20.6% permethrin AI and 20% piperonyl butoxide) was applied at the maximum label rate, travelling at 8, 16, and 32 km/h. Three replications were completed on 3 days at least a week apart, with 1 replication of each travel speed per day. On each application day the travel speeds were rotated. Overall, a travel speed of 32 km/h achieved the highest efficacy of Aqualuer® 20-20, followed by 16 km/h, and then 8 km/h, in an open field. In general, droplet size, deposition, and mosquito mortality increased with increasing travel speed. The increased travel speed will also enhance the work rate of a sprayer and operator, thus reducing the cost of ULV applications.

ABSTRACT

Multiple surveillance traps are currently available for adult mosquito surveillance. In this study, 2 new types, the Maxttrac™ Uno and Maxttrac™ Breeze mosquito traps, were compared against the BioGents™-Sentinel trap (BGS) for overall success in collecting Aedes albopictus in a 1,027-m2 vehicle enclosure and in the field. The enclosure test results showed both traps collected significantly fewer Ae. albopictus, compared to the BGS trap. The modification of using all BG lures for each trap did not increase the number of mosquitoes collected in the 2 new traps, when compared to collection with the original lures tested in the vehicle enclosure. Field test results showed that BGS trap collected higher numbers of Ae. albopictus than the 2 new traps, regardless of switching lure or not. Overall, the BGS trap was the most effective trap and the 2 new traps could be used as additional tools for the collection of Ae. albopictus.

Studies were conducted to determine if pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator (IGR) added to attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSBs) and ingested by adult Aedes albopictus (Skuse), could be fecally disseminated into water to inhibit emergence of mosquitoes (EI). Experimental treatments consisted of four dilutions of pyriproxyfen (0.5, 1, 5, and 10 ppb) in ATSB, with attractive sugar bait (ASB) serving as the negative control. To ensure no tarsal transfer of the IGR, the experimental treatments were dispensed in collagen sausages. Mosquito excrement was collected on card stock at the bottom of the mosquito cages at 1, 4, 6, and 8 h during the study. There were no differences between the EI times at which the fecal cards were collected (F19,88 = 1.8, P = 0.1592). The highest dilution of pyriproxyfen in ATSB (10 ppb) inhibited mosquito emergence in the most amounts (57%), as compared with the EI of other pyriproxyfen dilutions: 0.5 ppb = 42%, 1 ppb = 34%, and 5 ppb = 46% (F19,88 = 1.8, P = 0.1592). This study demonstrates that pyriproxyfen can be fecally disseminated into water and control larvae through adult mosquito ingestion and excretion of pyriproxyfen in ASB.
