ABSTRACT

In Magdeburg on the key day of the 31st of December 1983 73 children at 1 to 16 years of age have been registered to be blind or suspected to be blind. Nearly half of them (n = 38) is multiply injured, that means, besides blindness they show another relevant organic affection. A central position in the causes of blindness in multiply impaired children hold the retrolental fibroplasia, the intensive myopia, and the amblyopia (mostly temporary diagnosis). Mental and physical retardation of premature infants respectively debility are the most frequent diagnoses of the secondary disease. We can't explain the increase respectively the decrease of multiple damages in blind children but merely refer to the high number of multiply impaired blind children among blind ones.

ABSTRACT

An objective procedure for assessing damage to corneal endothelium is described; it is based on photometrical determination of the dye toluidine blue absorbed by damaged cells. This inexpensive quick test is suitable both for preoperative assessment of grafts and for checking procedures for cornea conversation. The use of the peripheral region of the endothelium enables the remaining central trephined portion in transplantations. When this procedure was used to conserve pig corneae in the moist chamber there was a slight increase in damage by the ninth day. By the 17th day all the endothelial cells were damaged.

ABSTRACT

On 75 patients with chronic renal insufficiency the relations between renal hypertension due to volume expansion and findings of the fundus of the eye were investigated. In compensated renal insufficiency in 20 of 23 patients a hypertension appeared, hypertensively conditioned changes of the fundus were observed only in about one third of the cases. When the functional disturbances progressed into the stage of the chronic terminal renale insufficiency on the other hand in 27 of 38 patients retina findings conditioned by hypertension were stated. Among 38 haemodialysis patients by regulation of the fluid balance 11 times a normal fundus and 15 times an improvement of the findings of the fundus of the eye could be revealed. In 13 patients the findings of the fundus generally improved after successful renal transplantation. Also our examinations call the usual stage subdivisions after Thiel and Keith and co-workers, respectively, in question.

ABSTRACT

It is recommended to use a certain method to cover cystic oozing cushions after filtering operations of glaucoma. To this effect a lamellar scleral flap is formed which is laid over the previously exposed scleral fissure. An impediment of the filtration of aqueous humour is avoided by means of suitable fixation of Tenon's capsule.
