ABSTRACT
Multirotors Aerial Vehicles are special class of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with many practical applications. The growing demand for this class of aircraft requires tools that speed up their development. Simulated environments have gained increasing importance, as they facilitate testing and prototyping solutions, where virtual environments allow real-time interaction with simulated models, with similar behavior to real systems. More recently, the use of Augmented Reality has allowed an increasing experience of immersion and integration between the virtual world and a real scenario. This work proposes the use of Augmented Reality technology and a simulated model of a multirotor to create an interactive flight environment, aiming to improve the user experience in the analysis of simulated models. For this purpose, a smartphone was adopted as a hardware platform, a game engine is used as a basis for the development of the Augmented Reality application, that represents a numerical simulation of the flight dynamics and the control system of a multirotor, and a game controller is adopted for user interaction. The resulting system demonstrates that Augmented Reality is a viable technology that can be used to increase the possibilities of evaluating simulated systems.

For each treatment, the identifier and type of trial, the severity of the disease, the sponsor, the country where the trial was conducted, and the trial results are presented. The drugs were classified according to their mechanism of action. Several drugs that reduced mortality also reduced inflammation in the most severe cases. These include some that are not considered anti-inflammatory, such as Aviptadil, pyridostigmine bromide, anakinra, imatinib, baricitinib, and bevacizumab, as well as the combination of ivermectin, aspirin, dexamethasone, and enoxaparin. Nigella sativa seeds with honey have also been reported to have therapeutic activity. On the other hand, tofacitinib, novaferon with ritonavir, and lopinavir were also effective, as well as in combination with antiviral therapies such as danoprevir with ritonavir. The natural products colchicine and Vitamin D3 were only effective in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, as was hydroxychloroquine. Drug repositioning has been the main tool in the search for effective therapies by expanding the pharmacological options available to patients.
El objetivo del presente trabajo fue conocer qué tratamientos mostraron efectividad contra COVID-19, para lo cual se revisan y discuten los resultados de 37 estudios clínicos iniciados durante 2020 y concluidos en 2021. Estos fueron seleccionados de bases de datos, excluyendo vacunas, estudios computacionales, in silico, in vitro y con sueros hiperinmunes de pacientes recuperados. Se documentaron 34 fármacos, una vitamina y un remedio herbolario, con actividad farmacológica ante COVID-19 sintomático. Estos redujeron la mortalidad, el progreso de la enfermedad, o el tiempo de recuperación. Para cada tratamiento se presenta identificador y tipo de estudio, la gravedad de la enfermedad, patrocinador, país donde se realizó, así como sus resultados. Los fármacos se clasificaron de acuerdo con su mecanismo de acción. Varios fármacos que redujeron la mortalidad también disminuyeron la inflamación en los casos más graves. ABSTRACT
Plant defensins are a potential tool in crop improvement programs through biotechnology. Their antifungal action makes them attractive molecules for the production of transgenic plants. Information is currently lacking on what happens to the expression of defense genes in transgenic plants that overexpress a defensin. Here we show the relative expression of four defense-related genes: Mn-sod, PAL1, aos1 and HPL evaluated in two transgenic soybean events (Def1 and Def17) constitutively expressing the NmDef02 defensin gene from Nicotiana megalosiphon. The expression of these defense genes showed a differential profile in the transgenic events, with the increased expression of the aos1 gene and the repression of the Mn-sod gene in both events, when compared to the non-transgenic control. Furthermore, the expression of the PAL1 gene only increased in the Def17 event. The results indicate that although there were some changes in the expression of defense genes in transgenic plants overexpressing the defensin NmDef02; the morphoagronomic parameters evaluated were similar to the non-transgenic control. Understanding the molecular changes that occur in these transgenic plants could be of interest in the short, medium and long term.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies suggest that senolytic compounds such as quercetin (a natural product) and dasatinib (a synthetic product) decrease senescent cells, reduce inflammation, and alleviate human frailty. This evidence has opened a new field of research for studying the effect of these compounds on age-related dysfunction and diseases. OBJECTIVE: The present study performed in silico and we identified new potential senolytic candidates from an extensive database that contains natural products (NPs) and semi-synthetic products (SMSs). METHODS: Computer programs Chemminer and rcdk packages, which compared the fingerprints of numerous molecules (40,383) with reference senolytics, and the creation of a pharmacological network built with signaling pathways and targets involved in senescence processes were used to identify compounds with a potential activity. RESULTS: Six drug-like candidates (3,4'-dihydroxypropiophenone, baicalein, α, ß-dehydrocurvularin, lovastatin, luteolin, and phloretin) were identified. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first time that these six natural molecules have been proposed to have senolytic activity. To validate the methodology employed in the identification of new drug-like senolytics, experimental evidence is needed with models that evaluate senolytic activity.

The Salar de Atacama (SdA) is the largest Li reserve globally. The origin of Li, together with the rest of solutes, has been object of debate. Thus, rock weathering at low temperature, hydrothermal leaching or magmatic origin together with subsequent evaporation has been hypothesized. However, the extreme Li enrichment (>4000 mg/L) and the location of the Li-Mg-rich brines around the Salar Fault System (SFS) that crosses the nucleus of the SdA in half remain unexplained. The objective of this work is to define the thermohaline groundwater flow in the SdA basin to account for the genesis of its extreme Li enrichment. Thermohaline flow modelling has demonstrated the critical effect of the minimum hydraulic head (MHH) of the regional water table on the groundwater flow of salt flats. The MHH divides the basin into two isolated hydrodynamic systems and constitutes the endpoint towards which the most evaporated brines converge. The spatial mismatch between the locations of the Li-Mg-rich brines in the central-western zone of the nucleus (in the SFS) and the MHH in the easternmost zone of the nucleus discards recent evaporative concentration of the recharge water as the main mechanism of Li enrichment. Moreover, the persistence of a saline interface surrounding the nucleus at depth, regardless of the temperature gradient, also precludes lateral recharge (predominantly from the east) to ascend along the SFS. On the other hand, the computed thermohaline flow is compatible with the remobilization of buried layers of Li-Mg-enriched salts and/or clays by dilute recharge waters coming from the west or southwest of the basin. Here, the role of faults and density-driven flow is key to allow efficient downward and upward flow rates that favour the remobilization of Li and Mg.

Fungal diseases lead to significant losses in soybean yields and a decline in seed quality; such is the case of the Asian soybean rust and anthracnose caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi and Colletotrichum truncatum, respectively. Currently, the development of transgenic plants carrying antifungal defensins offers an alternative for plant protection against pathogens. This paper shows the production of transgenic soybean plants expressing the NmDef02 defensin gene using the biolistic delivery system, in an attempt to improve resistance against diseases and reduce the need for chemicals. Transgenic lines were assessed in field conditions under the natural infections of P. pachyrhizi and C. truncatum. The constitutive expression of the NmDef02 gene in transgenic soybean plants was shown to enhance resistance against these important plant pathogens. The quantification of the P. pachyrhizi biomass in infected soybean leaves revealed significant differences between transgenic lines and the non-transgenic control. In certain transgenic lines there was a strong reduction of fungal biomass, revealing a less severe disease. Integration and expression of the transgenes were confirmed by PCR, Southern blot, and qRT-PCR, where the Def1 line showed a higher relative expression of defensin. It was also found that the expression of the NmDef02 defensin gene in plants of the Def1 line did not have a negative effect on the nodulation induced by Bradyrhizobium japonicum. These results indicate that transgenic soybean plants expressing the NmDef02 defensin gene have a substantially enhanced resistance to economically important diseases, providing a sound environmental approach for decreasing yield losses and lowering the burden of chemicals in agriculture.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), the incidence of respiratory complications following cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is not well established. We aimed to describe the center-specific incidence and patient characteristics associated with respiratory complications following CRS and HIPEC in patients receiving treatment for PC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the University Hospital of Arrixaca study database to identify patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC for PC. Patients who experienced a post-operative respiratory complication were categorized according to the National Cancer Institute-Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Multivariable regression methods were used to identify independent risk factors for developing a respiratory complication following CRS and HIPEC. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2017, we identified 247 patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC for PC. A total of eight patients (3.2%) were categorized as having a post-operative respiratory complication. A diaphragmatic peritonectomy and a PC index of > 14 were identified as independent risk factors for developing a respiratory complication. Radiographic evidence of a pleural effusion was identified in 72 patients who had CRS of the diaphragmatic peritoneum; however, only 6 (8.3%) of these patients required pleural drainage. CONCLUSIONS: Only 3.2% of patients developed a symptomatic respiratory complication following CRS and HIPEC. A pleural effusion was identified in almost all patients requiring a diaphragmatic peritonectomy as part of their CRS; however, less than one in ten of these patients required pleural drainage. Prophylactic insertion of a pleural drainage tube is, therefore, not indicated following CRS and HIPEC.

The consolidation of the dairy industry, with increase in sizes, density and productivity of the herds, was associated to unprecedented bovine tuberculosis (bTB) prevalence levels in dairy herds in Uruguay, where Johne's disease (JD), another mycobacterial disease, is also prevalent. Here, we aimed to characterize the association between bTB- and JD-diagnostic results in two heavily bTB- and JD-coinfected dairy herds. Results from bTB-intradermal tests and JD-ELISA in 686 cows indicated a significantly (P < 0.001) higher frequency of bTB-positive animals in the JD-positive population, in which a significantly lower agreement between the caudal and cervical comparative intradermal tests was observed, compared to the JD-negative population. These findings suggest a significant association between the detection of these mycobacterial diseases, that may affect the performance of the routine bTB diagnostic tests performed in dairy herds in Uruguay.

Objetivos: Estimar el efecto de los antimaláricos (AM) sobre los diferentes dominios del índice de daño SLICC (SDI). Métodos: Se estudiaron pacientes con diagnóstico clínico reciente (≤2 años) de lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) de la cohorte GLADEL. Variable de estudio: aumento en los dominios del SDI desde el ingreso a la cohorte. Variables independientes: características sociodemográficas, clínicas, laboratorio y tratamientos. El efecto de los AM, como variable dependiente del tiempo, sobre los dominios más frecuentes del SDI (ajustado por factores de confusión) fue examinado con un modelo de regresión de Cox multivariado. Resultados: De 1466 pacientes estudiados, 1049 (72%) recibieron AM con un tiempo medio de exposición de 30 meses (Q1-Q3: 11-57) y 665 pacientes (45%) presentaron daño durante un seguimiento medio de 24 meses (Q1-Q3: 8-55); 301 eventos fueron cutáneos, 208 renales, 149 neuropsiquiátricos, 98 musculoesqueléticos, 88 cardiovasculares y 230 otros. Después de ajustar por factores de confusión, el uso de AM se asoció a un menor riesgo de daño renal (HR 0,652; IC 95%: 0,472-0,901) y en el límite de la significancia estadística (HR 0,701, IC 95%: 0,481-1,024) para el dominio neuropsiquiátrico. Conclusión: En GLADEL, el uso de AM se asoció independientemente a un menor riesgo de daño acumulado renal.
Objective: To assess the effects of antimalarials (AM) over the items of the SLICC Damage Index (SDI). Methods: Patients with recent (≤2 years) diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from the GLADEL cohort were studied. End-point: increase in items SDI since cohort entry. Independent variables (socio-demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment) were included. The effect of AM as a time dependent variable on most frequent SDI items (adjusting for potential confounders) was examined with a multivariable Cox regression model. Results: Of the 1466 patients included in this analysis, 1049 (72%) received AM with a median exposure time of 30 months (Q1-Q3: 11-57). Damage occurred in 665 (45%) patients during a median follow-up time of 24 months (Q1-Q3: 8-55). There were 301 integument, 208 renal, 149 neuropsychiatric, 98 musculoskeletal, 88 cardiovascular and 230 others less frequently represented damages. After adjusting for potential confounders at any time during follow-up, a lower risk of renal damage (HR 0.652; 95% CI: 0.472-0.901) and borderline for neuropsychiatric damage (HR 0.701, 95% CI: 0.481-1.024) was found. Conclusion: In the GLADEL cohort, after adjustment for possible confounding factors, AM were independently associated with a reduced risk of renal damage accrual.

Nitrogen compounds play a key role on grape and wine quality. Their composition in grapes depends mainly on variety, viticultural management, and terroir, and affects fermentation kinetics and the volatile compound formation. The aim of this work was to study grape and wine amino acid composition of ungrafted or grafted onto cv. País Carignan grapevines growing under rainfed conditions in ten sites of the Maule Valley (Chile). The results showed that proline was the most abundant amino acid in grapes and wines. In general, Carignan noir grapevines grafted over País showed lower grape amino acid content respect to ungrafted vines. Cool night index (CI) was inversely correlated to several amino acids, showing that their plant synthesis or accumulation increased with lower minimum temperatures during the last month before harvest. Truquilemu (Tru) and Ciénaga de Name (Cdn) sites showed the highest concentration for several amino acids and total amino acid content in grapes, which led to a faster alcoholic fermentation.

In this study we investigated the combined effect of shearing and cooling rate in the rheology of organogels developed in high oleic safflower oil by (R)-12-hydroxystearic acid (HSA), its primary amide derivative [(R)-12-hydroxyoctadecanamide, HOA], and the N-octadecyl derivative of HOA [(R)-N-octadecyl-12-hydroxyoctadecanamide, OHOA]. The experimental set up to develop the organogels involved: 1). The use of quiescent (0s-1) or shearing (300, 600, and 1200s-1) conditions during cooling the gelator solutions (2%) just until achieving the gelator's melting temperature (TM) in the vegetable oil, to then continuing the cooling under static conditions until achieving 15°C) The use of cooling rate protocols involving a constant cooling rate of 1°C/min (CR1) or 10°C/min (CR10) in the shearing and static stages, or variable cooling rates in each stage (i.e., VR1-10 or VR10-1). The elasticity of the organogels (G') was measured while cooling under static conditions, once the systems achieved 15°C, and after 60min at this temperature. The rheological results obtained at 15°C showed a cooling rate and molecular weight-dependent effect of shearing on G'. We propose that the molecular relaxation time of gelator molecules, and its increase as molecular weight increases and as temperature decreases, plays an important role on the gelator's susceptibility to go through a shear induced crystallization process. Therefore, high molecular weight molecules like OHOA (551.97Da) would remain stretched by shearing longer times than HSA (300.49Da) and HOA (299.49Da). Thus, when shearing was applied while cooling at the higher cooling rate (i.e., CR10 and VR10-1), the stretched OHOA molecules would lead to the development of mesophase precursors that upon further cooling under quiescent conditions, crystallize developing a well-structured organogel. In contrast, stretched low molecular weight molecules (i.e., HSA and HOA) with shorter relaxation time would dissolve back to the isotropic state during cooling. Additionally, the rheological results of HSA and HOA organogels suggested that the shear induced crystallization process might be dependent on the gelator polarity also. These results show that the application of shear and the extent of its application as temperature decreases until achieving TM, have important implication on the self-assembly of gelator molecules, and therefore in the organization and rheology of the three-dimensional crystal network of the organogel.

Background: Diarrhoea and acute lower respiratory infections are leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality, which can be prevented by simple low-cost interventions. Integrated strategies can provide additional benefits by addressing multiple health burdens simultaneously. Methods: We conducted a community-randomized-controlled trial in 51 rural communities in Peru to evaluate whether an environmental home-based intervention package, consisting of improved solid-fuel stoves, kitchen sinks, solar disinfection of drinking water and hygiene promotion, reduces lower respiratory infections, diarrhoeal disease and improves growth in children younger than 36 months. The attention control group received an early child stimulation programme. Results: We recorded 24 647 child-days of observation from 250 households in the intervention and 253 in the attention control group during 12-month follow-up. Mean diarrhoea incidence was 2.8 episodes per child-year in the intervention compared with 3.1 episodes in the control arm. This corresponds to a relative rate of 0.78 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.58-1.05] for diarrhoea incidence and an odds ratio of 0.71 (95% CI: 0.47-1.06) for diarrhoea prevalence. No effects on acute lower respiratory infections or children's growth rates were observed. Conclusions: Combined home-based environmental interventions slightly reduced childhood diarrhoea, but the confidence interval included unity. Effects on growth and respiratory outcomes were not observed, despite high user compliance of the interventions. The absent effect on respiratory health might be due to insufficient household air quality improvements of the improved stoves and additional time needed to achieve attitudinal and behaviour change when providing composite interventions.

Introducción: el síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos es un estado protrombótico adquirido determinado por la presencia de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos en pacientes con trombosis venosa o arterial y una morbilidad incrementada durante el embarazo.Objetivos: describir los principales aspectos epidemiológico-clínicos del síndrome durante el embarazo y los resultados perinatales.Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y analítico de una serie de pacientes con síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos y embarazo en el Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas y el Centro Nacional de Reumatología, en La Habana, Cuba. La serie estudiada se constituyó con 188 mujeres. Se revisaron los expedientes clínicos de las gestantes internadas y de consultas externas de ambas instituciones, diagnosticadas como patología primaria o secundaria y se conformó una base de datos con variables epidemiológicas como: características del embarazo y desenlace materno fetal.Resultados: del total de pacientes estudiadas de la serie, 32 sufrieron trombosis con morbilidad obstétrica. Se diagnosticó síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos primario en seis pacientes y secundario en 26 (17,5 por ciento). La edad promedio fue de 27 años. Según el color de la piel; seis de cada 10 eran blancas y el resto, mestizas y negras. Entre estas pacientes hubo 81 embarazos; con una razón de 2,53 embarazos/paciente; 76 por ciento nacieron vivos, 18 por ciento tuvo un aborto espontáneo y hubo 5 por ciento de muertes fetales. De ellas, 16 por ciento tuvo parto pretérmino y 10 por ciento desarrolló preeclampsia. No hubo muertes maternas.Conclusiones: el embarazo en pacientes con síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos es de elevado riesgo, y se constató una elevada morbimortalidad materno fetal(AU)
Introduction: antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is an acquired prothrombotic state characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with venous or arterial thrombosis and increased morbidity during pregnancy.Objectives: describe the main clinical and epidemiological features of the syndrome during pregnancy as well as its perinatal outcomes.Methods: a descriptive analytical study was conducted of a series of patients with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and pregnancy at the Center for Medical Surgical Research and the National Rheumatology Center in Havana, Cuba. The study series was composed of 188 women. Examination was performed of the medical records of pregnant women either hospitalized or attending outpatient consultation at the two institutions who had been diagnosed with the syndrome as a primary or a secondary condition. A database was developed with epidemiological variables such as characteristics of the pregnancy and maternal fetal outcome.Results: of the total patients studied in the series, 32 had thrombosis with obstetric morbidity. Primary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome was diagnosed in six patients, whereas secondary APS was diagnosed in 26 (17.5 percent). Mean age was 27 years. With respect to skin color, six out of every ten patients were white, and the rest were either brown or black. There were 81 pregnancies in the series, i.e. 2.53 patients / pregnancy, with 76 percent live births, 18 percent spontaneous abortions and 5 percent fetal deaths. 16 percent had a preterm delivery and 10 percent developed preeclampsia. There were no maternal deaths.Conclusions: pregnancy in patients with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is highly risky, with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality(AU)

Introducción: el síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos es un estado protrombótico adquirido determinado por la presencia de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos en pacientes con trombosis venosa o arterial y una morbilidad incrementada durante el embarazo. Objetivos: describir los principales aspectos epidemiológico-clínicos del síndrome durante el embarazo y los resultados perinatales. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y analítico de una serie de pacientes con síndrome de anticuerpos antifosfolípidos y embarazo en el Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas y el Centro Nacional de Reumatología, en La Habana, Cuba. La serie estudiada se constituyó con 188 mujeres. Se revisaron los expedientes clínicos de las gestantes internadas y de consultas externas de ambas instituciones, diagnosticadas como patología primaria o secundaria y se conformó una base de datos con variables epidemiológicas como: características del embarazo y desenlace materno fetal. Resultados: del total de pacientes estudiadas de la serie, 32 sufrieron trombosis con morbilidad obstétrica. INTRODUCTION: Hospital malnutrition is a prevalent problem that cause higher morbidity and mortality, poorer response to treatment and higher hospital stay and cost. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with hospital malnutrition in a peruvian General Hospital. METHODS: Cross-sectional study including 211 hospitalized patients in Medicine and Surgery wards. Demographic, clinical and anthropometrical indicators' data was collected. Multivariate analysis was binary logistic regression. All tests had a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Prevalence of hospital malnutrition was 46.9%. Prevalences of caloric and protein malnutrition were 21.3% and 37.5%, respectively. Bivariate analysis found that hospitalization in Surgery wards was associated with a major risk of caloric (OR = 4.41, IC 95% [1.65-11.78]) and protein malnutrition (OR = 2.52, IC 95% [1.297-4.89]). During the analysis of quantitative variables, significant associations between number of comorbidities and caloric malnutrition (p = 0.031) was found, and also between the beginning of food intake changes and the presence of protein malnutrition (p = 0.031). Multivariate analysis showed significant association between diagnosis of neoplasm and presence of caloric malnutrition (OR = 5.22, IC [1.43-19.13]). CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of hospital malnutrition was near 50%, as in similar studies. Protein-caloric malnutrition prevalences obtained, differ from the ones in a previous study in this hospital, which is explained by the different diagnostic criteria and particular characteristics of groups of patients, such as procedence ward and comorbidities. An association between protein-caloric and hospitalization in a Surgery ward was found; the reasons should be investigated in further studies.
Introducción: La desnutrición hospitalaria es un problema prevalente que genera mayor morbi-mortalidad, peor respuesta al tratamiento, mayor estancia y costo hospitalario. Objetivos: Determinar la prevalencia y factores asociados a desnutrición hospitalaria en un hospital general peruano. Métodos: Estudio analítico transversal de 211 pacientes en servicios de Medicina y Cirugía. Se analizó variables demográficas, clínicas e indicadores antropométricos. El análisis multivariado fue de regresión logística binaria. El nivel de significancia fue 5% (p < 0,05). Resultados: La prevalencia de desnutrición hospitalaria fue 46.9% y las de desnutrición calórica y proteica fueron 21,3% y 37,5% respectivamente. En el análisis bivariado, estar hospitalizado en el servicio de Cirugía se asoció a un mayor riesgo de desnutrición calórica (OR = 4,41, IC 95% [1,65-11,78]) y proteica (OR = 2,52, IC 95% [1,30-4,90]). Hubo asociación significativa entre el número de comorbilidades del paciente y desnutrición calórica (p = 0,031), y el tiempo de cambio de ingesta alimentaria y presencia de desnutrición proteica (p = 0,031). El análisis multivariado mostró asociación significativa entre el diagnóstico de neoplasia y la presencia de desnutrición calórica (OR = 5,22, IC 95% [1,43-19,13]). Conclusiones: La prevalencia de desnutrición hospitalaria fue cerca del 50%, coincidiendo con estudios similares. Las prevalencias de desnutrición calórica/proteica halladas difieren de las de un estudio anterior en este hospital, explicándose por parámetros de diagnóstico diferentes y características particulares de las poblaciones, como el servicio de procedencia y comorbilidades. Se encontró asociación entre desnutrición proteica/calórica y estar hospitalizado en el servicio de Cirugía; las razones deben investigarse en estudios posteriores.

A comparative study on reflection of nanosecond Nd-YAG laser pulses in ablation of aluminum in air and in vacuum under the same other experimental conditions is performed. We find that, hemispherical total reflectivity of aluminum undergoes a sharp drop at the plasma formation threshold both in the air and in vacuum. The initial large value (0.8) of aluminum reflectivity decreases to a level of about 0.14 and 0.24 for ablation in the air and in vacuum, respectively. These decreased reflectivity values remain virtually unchanged with further increasing laser fluence. The reflectivity drop in the air is observed to be sharper than in vacuum. Our study indicates that the reflectivity drop is predominantly caused by absorption of the laser light in plasma. Nano/micro-structural defects present on practical sample surfaces play the important role in the plasma formation, especially for the ablation in the air, where the plasma formation threshold is found to be by a factor of 3 smaller than in vacuum.
