ABSTRACT

This article introduces the "Behavior Analysis in Practice Emergency Series of Publications on Systemic Racism and Police Brutality." After the murder of George Floyd, the behavior analytic community was charged to respond in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King's challenge to social scientists. The charge of Dr. King was to explain real life phenomena negatively affecting the Black community. This series covered a wide range of topics with the intent of creating solutions that may be used to address remnants of the overarching impact of systemic racism and anti-Blackness. In this editorial, we provide an overview of the major themes of the accepted articles, some personal accounts of the editorial team, context for the special issue, discuss the contributions of the included articles, and a discussion of the areas in need of further work.

ABSTRACT

While the COVID-19 pandemic has initiated drastic personal, social, organizational, and governmental level changes, it also sparked a unique opportunity. More Behavior Analysis providers had the option to respond to this crisis by offering telehealth services. As providers address their ability to conduct sessions using electronic delivery methods, there is also a need to prioritize those who historically have been forgotten in the formation of systemwide change: Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC). This paper outlines barriers to accessing telehealth treatment and includes options for individual providers and organizations to address disparity and other relevant contextual variables within their telehealth models.

Specific objectives included: (1) gathering information from Black Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) certificants regarding their experiences following the responses from the white behavior analytic community, (2) examining the prevalence of topics related to racism and Black experiences in behavior analytic podcasts before and after the recent police brutality events, and (3) to define and describe the impact of performative allyship on Black communities.

ABSTRACT

Racism continues to reveal disastrous effects on the Black community. There exists no behavior-analytic literature with a specific focus on ending Black psychological suffering due to continual acts of violence perpetrated against the community. I present a behavioral model to promote Black psychological liberation, infusing preestablished frameworks of Black psychology and cultural healing practices with acceptance and commitment therapy. The model addresses behaviors observed within systemic and internalized racism.
