ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Ten heat-labile (LT) and 23 heat-stable (ST) enterotoxin-producing strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and 100 non-enterotoxigenic E coli (non-ETEC) strains isolated from pigs with diarrhoea were examined for the presence of colonisation factors by means of mannose-resistant haemagglutination and serological tests. Seven of 10 LT strains, one of 23 ST and 18 of 100 non-ETEC carried K88 antigen; and four ST and four non-ETEC strains possessed CFA/I antigen. All strains carrying K88, K99 and CFA/I antigens were positive in the mannose-resistant microhaemagglutination (MRMH) test but four ST and 14 non-ETEC isolates positive in the MRMH test did not possess K88, K99 or CFA/I antigens. A considerable number of non-ETEC strains were positive in the MRMH test but lacked K88 and K99 antigens, suggesting that other unknown haemagglutinating colonisation factors may exist in porcine E coli strains.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Two leptospiral serovars belonging to the Hebdomadis Serogroup are described. These strains are represented by two isolations from apparently healthy zebu cattle. It is proposed that the serovars be designated guaicurus strain Bov. G and goiano strain Bov. 131.

ABSTRACT

The immuno-stimulating Levamisole action was checked by the authors in guinea-pigs vaccinated against brucellosis and exposed to the challenge test afterwards against 2.308 Brucella abortus pathogenic strain. Twelve lots of eight guinea-pigs were used disposed in the following distribution: Lots I, III, IV were vaccinated with B-19 strain vaccine; lots II, IV and VI were vaccinated with the same vaccine and, after 48 hours, received the Levamisole injection. Lots VII VIII received only the Levamisole injection and the pathogenic Brucella strain, forming the control groups. The vaccinated guinea-pigs showed a higher protection against challenge, always above 75% in relation to the lots that were only vaccinated, demonstrating a dear immuno-stimulating action of the essayed product. Considering the obtained results in this assay, the authors speculate on the anti-brucellosis vaccines potentialization with immuno-stimulating products, as Levamisole.

ABSTRACT

A serological examination was carried out for L. monocytogenes antibodies on 9,318 domestic animal--7,809 bovine, 838 horses and 671 swine--in São Paulo, Brazil. Serum agglutination in tubes was the method used. Only somatic antigens from serotypes 1, 2, 3, 4a and 4b were employed. It was considered reagent all sera reacting in a titer 1/20 while as positive only sera with 1/320 or above. According this criteria the results showed showed that in cattle 17.8% were reagent but only 8 sera were positive for types 1, 2 and 4b. Only type 1 was found in horses in a rate of 22.7% reagent, and 11 positive samples. For swine the percentage of reagent was 13.3% but none serum was positive, since the highest titer was 1/160.

ABSTRACT

A new leptospiral serotype in the serogroup Pyrogenes is described. The strain was isolated from one gray "four-eyed" opossum (Philander opossum). It is proposed that the serotype be designated guaratuba, strain An-7705. The isolations of serotypes ballum from the South American field mouse (Akodon arviculoides), szwajizak and icterohaemorrhagiae from the North American opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), and grippotyphosa from many other wild animal species as well as domesticated animals are also described.
