ABSTRACT

A new nutrient medium for the cultivation of bifidobacteria, containing dry nutrient bases of the Bactofoc series, has been developed. The nutrient medium composition has been adjusted by modern methods with the use of a model Bioscreen apparatus permitting the study of growth kinetics in 200 cultivation processes simultaneously. The new nutrient medium has been used in the development of the continuous flow cultivation of bifidobacteria in a bioreactor under anaerobic conditions.

ABSTRACT

Isolation, identification and drug sensitivity assay of microorganisms from pathological materials of 177 patients with nonspecific diseases of the lungs, mainly pneumonia, were performed on blood and selective "chocolate" agars by using Baktofok-MK, a new dry nutrient basis developed by the authors. Blood and "chocolate" agars based on the Hottinger's hydrolysate were used as the control media. It was shown that with the quantitative procedure for inoculating the pathological material, the experimental media based on Baktofok-MK were much more sensitive to growth properties that the control media. That made it possible to detect larger numbers of etiologically important microbial species on the blood agar and to isolate clinical strains of Hemophilus spp. from a larger number of specimens on the "chocolate" agar.

ABSTRACT

During diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 104 children aged 6 months to 14 years were subjected to spot biopsy of the mucous membrane of the antral part of the stomach and duodenal bulb with a purpose of subsequent studies for Campylobacter pyloris (C. P.) including primary microscopy, the screening-urease test and culture isolation followed by its identification according to all the necessary biochemical tests. C. P. were detected in 50% of the children examined including 9 out of 12 patients suffering from ulcer disease of the duodenum. It was shown that the C. P. incidence noticeably rose with an increase of the period of the gastroenterologic anamnesis. The characteristic clinical and endoscopic signs of the illness were defined, associated with most or less probable C. P. isolation. It has been established that the findings of the screening-urease test cannot form the basis for the final diagnosis of pyloric campylobacteriosis in children.

ABSTRACT

A complex of triterpenic oligoglycosides or cucumariosides was isolated from the skin-muscular sac of Cucumaria japonica. The complex includes at least 7 components. Fractionation of the complex on lyophilized sephadex LH-20 resulted in quantitative isolation of its 2 main components, i.e. cucumariosides I and II in a chromatographically pure state. The part of these glucosides in the native mixture of cucumariosides was 65 and 20% respectively. The complex inhibited the growth of Candida albicans and C. tropicalis in concentrations of 50 microgram/ml. Cucumarioside II inhibited the growth of the above organisms in a concentration of 60 microgram/ml. The MIC of I for these organisms was 30 and 40 microgram/ml respectively.

ABSTRACT

Enterotoxin was obtained from the culture of E. coli O15 by salt precipitation and gel-chromatography. The toxic activity of the preparation increased during the isolation and purification: 60-fold according to the results of the method of ligated rabbit intestinal segment and 66-100-fold according to the skin test. The "plateau" and the second fraction obtained as a result of gel-chromatography were inactive according to the results of the method of ligated intestinal segment, but possessed PF-activity in the skin test. Two suppositions are put forward: 1) possibly the factor of vascular permeability and the diarrheal factor were two different substances ((molecules), or 2) the skin test was more sensitive for determination of the toxicity than the method of the ligated segment of rabbit intestine.
