ABSTRACT

Leafhopper genus Adelungia Melichar, 1902 is reviewed. Spathicerula Gnezdilov gen. nov. is described with Adelungia calligoni Oshanin, 1908 as the type species, and a new combination-Spathicerula calligoni (Oshanin, 1908), comb. nov., is proposed. Adelungia tridigitata Dlabola, 1984 is placed in synonymy under A. calligoni. Lectotypes are designated for Adelungia elegans Melichar, 1902 and A. breviceps Kusnezov, 1931 to stabilize the nomenclature in the group according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

The type species of the genus, Paraphysifer wilsoni Sinaiko & Dietrich, 2020, is placed in synonymy under Psammotettix pictipennis (Kirschbaum, 1868), with a new combination proposed-Paraphysifer pictipennis (Kirschbaum, 1868), comb. n. Psammotettix narsikulovi Dlabola, 1960, P. salsuginosus Logvinenko, 1961, and P. perpictus Logvinenko, 1978 are transferred to the genus Paraphysifer with new combinations proposed-Paraphysifer narsikulovi (Dlabola, 1960), comb. n., P. salsuginosus (Logvinenko, 1961), comb. n., and P. perpictus (Logvinenko, 1978), comb. n. Key to species of Paraphysifer given. Relationships of Paraphysifer and Psammotettix Haupt, 1929 are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The present study is an update on the situation of potential vectors of Xylella fastidiosa in Tunisia. Investigations in nine Tunisian regions (Nabeul, Bizerte, Béja, Jendouba, Zaghouan, Kairouan, Ben Arous, Tunis and Manouba) from 2018 to 2021 allowed for the observation of 3758 Aphrophoridae among a total of 9702 Auchenorrhyncha individuals collected by sweep net. Four Aphrophoridae species were identified with Philaenus tesselatus as most abundant (62%), followed by Neophilaenus campestris (28%), Neophilaenus lineatus (5%) and Philaenus maghresignus (5%). Aphrophoridae individuals were found to be particularly abundant in both forests of Nabeul and Jendouba, secondarily in olive groves and dry grassland. Furthermore, their distribution on weed hosts was followed in these two regions where nymphs and adults are widely distributed. P. tesselatus appears to be the most abundant species as determined either by conventional sweep netting for adults or by plant sampling on Sonchus, Smyrnium, Cirsium, Rumex, Polygonum and Picris for nymphs. Limited numbers of adults of P. maghresignus were detected by sweep netting, while nymphs of this species were found on Asphodelus microcarpus only. N. campestris was found in high numbers on plants belonging to the Poaceae family in forests, dry grassland and olive groves whereas N. lineatus occurred on herbs under or near olive trees and in dry grasslands.

ABSTRACT

North-African planthopper genus Lethierium Dlabola, 1980 is revised. Lethierium cedricolum (Dlabola, 1989), L. juniperi (Bergevin, 1915), and L. reiberi (Lethierry, 1878) are redescribed, with new records provided. Two new species are described from Central MoroccoL. carinatum sp. nov. from Middle Atlas Mountains and L. grandilobum sp. nov. from High Atlas Mountains. L. juniperi is recorded for the first time from Morocco. A key to species of the genus is provided. The phylogenetic relationships of Lethierium Dlabola within the subfamily Hysteropterinae are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Background: Euroxenusvayssieresi (Bonfils, Attie & Reynaud, 2001) (Issinae, Sarimini) was described (in the genus Borbonissus Bonfils, Attie & Reynaud, 2001) from Réunion Island, in the Indian Ocean and, previous to this report, has not been recorded elsewhere. Euroxenusvayssieresi is here illustrated and re-described to improved taxonomic diagnosis. New information: Euroxenusvayssieresi is recorded for the first time from the Island of Hawaii in the Hawaiian Archipelago. This is first record of the family Issidae from the Hawaiian Archipelago.

ABSTRACT

The study is focused on the leafhopper tribe Adelungiini (Megophthalminae) of Iran and based on the specimens collected since 1970s to 2018 and deposited in the Hayk Mirzayans Insect Museum, Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, Teheran (Iran) and in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, Saint Petersburg (Russia). Achrus caligonicolus Dlabola, 1981 and Achrus taghizadehi Dlabola, 1981 are placed in synonymy under Achrus albicosta (Kusnezov, 1929) and Melicharella pascualis Dubovsky, 1968 is placed in synonymy under Melicharella basalis Dlabola, 1960. Five species: Dalus leopardinus (Haupt, 1917), Melicharella basalis Dlabola, 1960, Platyproctus agraphopteron Bergevin, 1932, P. omani (Kameswara Rao et Ramakrishnan, 1983), and Zubara lycii Al-ne'ami et Linnavuori, 1982 are recorded for the first time from Iran, representing three new generic records from the country. Male genitalia of D. leopardinus and Adelungia elegans Melichar, 1902 are illustrated here for the first time. A revised checklist of Adelungiini of Iran, with a key to species and maps of their distribution are provided.

ABSTRACT

Examination of the materials on Cavatorium dumetorum (Dlabola, 1981), including the type specimens, revealed that Dlabola (1981) based his description of this species on mixed type series. C. dumetorum sensu stricto is clearly distinguished by male anal tube with latero-apical processes and ventral phallobase lobe narrowing apically. Another species, externally close to C. dumetorum, but well recognized by male anal tube without processes and ventral phallobase lobe not narrowing apically, is described as new basing on the paratypes of C. dumetorum and other material available. C. dumetorum is re-described and a key to species of the genus is provided.
