ABSTRACT

This review presents the results of long-term study of the species diversity of plant viruses on the Asian territory of Russia. The known and new viruses were revealed in agro- and biocenoses and identified not only for the Far East and Siberia but also for Russia. Based on the criteria of traditional and molecular-genetic taxonomy, 50 viruses were referred to 8 families and 18 genera of the currently known 17 families and 78 genera of plant viruses. The taxonomic status of new phytopathogenic viruses revealed on the Asian territory of Russia was defined.

ABSTRACT

More than 50 strains of 42 species representing 16 genera and 7 families of plant viruses have been identified in the Asian territory of Russia mainly in the South of Far East and Siberia. The viruses were united into the genera according to the data on morphology of virions and virus intracellular inclusions, the range of host-plants as well as properties of virus in infectious plant sap, physico-chemical and antigenic properties of capsid proteins. Taking into account significant differences of plant virus strains as to biological properties there are reasonable proposition to include a strain as an independent taxonomic unit into the present day classification of plant viruses.

ABSTRACT

The antigenic properties of capsid proteins of potato virus Y (PVY) strains have been studied, the most wide antigenic specificity of necrotic group strains has been marked. Several antigen-active strains of necrotic group strains (PVY-N Far East, PVY-N Leningrad, PVY-N Moscow) and common group (PVY-O-3 Moscow, PVY-O Far East) have been revealed. Antisera against these strains reacted with any PVY strain. Virus specific surface epitope, corresponding to position 198-208 of polypeptide chain has been located, which is a group-specific epitope of potyviruses, identified in the Far East.
