ABSTRACT

There are a number of methods that can be used to determine the best phase of care for a postanesthesia/post-sedation patient. Policies and procedures developed in collaboration with one's anesthesia department should be the primary reference for determining the phase of care required for each patient. The ASPAN Perianesthesia Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretive Statements can also guide patient care by recommending what each patient needs in terms of assessments and interventions. It is important to remember that the patient requires a level of care, not a particular location. And finally, nurse creativity in trying new methods can enhance the patient's care and progression to a safe discharge.
