ABSTRACT

Circulating immune complexes (CIC) in the serum and anterior eye chamber were simultaneously measured by 4% polyethylene glycol in 23 ophthalmologic patients. The patients with noncomplicated cataracts were found to have elevated serum levels of CIC (175 +/- 8.1 opt. units, p less than 0.001), whereas the patients with glaucoma, diabetic angioretinopathy, and complicated myopia had even higher CIC levels in the serum (247 +/- 7.1 opt. units, p less than 0.001) together with the increased CIC levels in the anterior eye chamber fluid (29.43 +/- 0.88 opt. units, p less than 0.001), which fact is indicative of the augmentation of the autoimmune component it the progress of the dystrophic changes in the eye tissues.

ABSTRACT

Electron-microscopic and ultrahistochemical investigations of biopsies of the conjunctiva as well as of iris and retina of 46 patients with diabetes mellitus have revealed disturbances in the ultrastructure, bioenergetics and activity of enzyme processes of the cell at different stages of diabetic angioretinopathy. The increase in activity of peroxide oxidation of lipids in progression of retinopathy is recorded. It is recommended to use antioxidants and agents increasing oxidation-reduction processes.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with some data on change in the ultrastructure and ultrahistochemistry of erythrocytes in 85 patients with diabetes mellitus. Correlation between change of erythrocytic homeostasis and an extent of metabolic derangements and vascular symptoms is substantiated. Some mechanisms of pathogenesis of diabetic angiopathies have been unraveled, principles of their prevention and therapy are substantiated.

ABSTRACT

The ultrastructure of the bulbar conjunctiva bioptates have been studied in 12 persons suffering from lead intoxication (saturnism), 2-from tetraethyl-lead (TEL) intoxication and 3-are practically healthy persons; they make the control group. In all the patients manifested disturbances in the microcirculatory bed of the bulbar conjunctiva are revealed, the general character being identical at saturnism and TEL-intoxication. The main changes are observed in the wall of the blood microvessels: destruction of the endothelial lining up to revealing the basal membrane with adhesion of the blood formed elements and their diapedesis. This results in disorders of vascular permeability, in edema of the perivascular space and in appearance of cells and cellular detritus in it. An essential role in morphogenesis of the vascular disturbances produced by intoxication play certain rheological imparements: sludge-syndrome and microthrombosis. They produce certain distrophic changes.
