ABSTRACT

It was observed in experiments on mice that the central action of phenibut (beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid) diminished after destruction of brain dopaminergic neurons by 6-hydroxydopamine and after pretreatment with the dopamine receptor blocker haloperidol which suggests the dopaminergic component in the action of phenibut. In 13 of 16 patients receiving long-term treatment with antiparkinsonic drugs, addition of phenibut (0.25 g thrice daily for 10 days) resulted in marked clinical improvement with a significant increase of motor activity, as well as diminution of both rigidity and tremor. Follow-up showed a significant lowering of muscle tone of rigid muscles, augmentation of their strength and amplitude of movements. In 8 patients receiving phenibut without antiparkinsonic drugs the results were negligible.

ABSTRACT

A quantitative examination of sensitivity with using modulated sinosoidal currents was carried out in 10 healthy individuals and 44 patients with various disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system. In the healthy probands the magnitudes of the current force causing the specific sensation under the electrodes in various body regions were determined. A substantial, statistically significant rise of the current perception threshold was revealed in patients with superficial sensitivity disturbances. In patients with deep sensitivity disturbances both quantitative and qualitative distinctions were discovered.

ABSTRACT

The paper contains a description, concerning medicative treatment of 55 patients with chronic vertebro-basilar deficiency in cervical osteochondrosis. The purpose of this study was to remove irritation of the spinal plexus, insufficiency of the cerebral blood flow and secondary astheno-depressive conditions. The following measures were applied: physiotherapy (influences of sinusoidal modulated currents on the cervical part of the spine, massage), special medical gymnastics, drugs (vitamins of the B group, biogenic stimuli, spasmolytical and antihistamine drugs, tranquilizers) and psychotherapy. A comprehensive treatment leads to a steady improvment in 91% of the treated patients, and according to the REG data, to an activization of the blood supply in the zone of vascularization by spinal arteries, especially in the hemispheres with the largest initial blood repletion deficit.

ABSTRACT

The authors give some data on restitutional therapy of 516 patients (400 with sequelae following strokes and 116 with transient disorders of cerebral circulation). Treatment of the first group was made in a neurological ward, the second--in a cardiological sanatorium. The programme of restitutional therapy provided the use of psychosocial and biological methods, an appeal to the personality and stage-by-stage accomplishment of rehabilitative measures. Comprehensive restitutional therapy included psychotherapy, medical-activizing regimes, medical gymnastics, massage, occupational therapy, medicinal therapy, etc. The authors elaborated differentiated complexes of rehabilitative treatment for patients with spastic hemiparesis, normal or decreased tone, as well as for patients with transient disorders of cerebral circulation in conditions of a cardiological sanatorium. The indices of effectiveness were the following: an improvement of the condition in patients after brain strokes--97.8%, in patients with transient disorders of cerebral circulation--94%.
