ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the major stages of long-term studies of the effectiveness of application of gastrofluorography for detection of cancer and precancerous lesions in the stomach conducted during mass screenings in the Byelorussian SSR. The test results for the first Soviet-made on-site gastrofluorographic installation are presented. Successful applications of the installation for both screening and primary detection of the lesions are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The results of roentgenological, gastrofibroscopic and cytological examination of 327 patients with gastric ulcer disease are presented. It was found that gastric ulcer disease can be adequately diagnosed by single roentgenological and gastroscopic examination in 74 and 80.4% of cases, respectively. The effectiveness rises to 83.5 and 89% (P less than 0.001), respectively, if repeated examinations are carried out, following a course of antiinflammatory therapy, or more sophisticated procedures are applied. Cytological method is sufficiently reliable in identifying benign ulcerative changes in gastric mucosa (99.4%) and is suitable for estimating the advancement of proliferative processes in gastric epithelium.

ABSTRACT

Under discussion are some aspects of the diagnosis of malignant gastric ulcers established by means of a complex gastrologic examination of patients with ulcerous pathology of the stomach. Errors, difficulties and possibilities of roentgenological, gastroscopic and cytologic methods for recognition of malignant gastric ulcers are analysed. It is emphasized that cytological assay is highly efficient in ascertaining a malignant nature of the ulcer. A careful complex investigation of patient with gastric ulcer is felt to be indispensable to recognize its early stages.
