ABSTRACT

Amphibians are organisms which mainly have a biphasic life cycle. When at the larval stage, their habitat is generally aquatic, and when adults, they become terrestrial. Pond-breeding amphibians are sensitive to some disturbances in their environment which lead to the decline of a population. The interactions between the species and their environment are performed through movement. Movement ecology combines and explains the movement data of organisms with biotic and abiotic factors and because of this, knowing the movement of these creatures is of great ecological importance. We used the spool-and-line methodology in individuals of the treefrog Phyllomedusa burmeisteri, at the Reserva Ecologica Michelin, located in the southern region of Bahia in Brazil to study their movement patterns in different environments inside and outside of the forest. We monitored 19 P. burmeisteri individuals that presented a mean total movement distance of 2160.76 cm (S.D. 1152.42). We found no significant difference in the trajectories of individuals in forested and open areas, as well as a positive relationship between the distances individuals moved and their weight only in forested areas. no relationship between distance and weight of these individuals. We observed that individuals followed non-linear paths and the number of steps from one place to another varied among individuals. Our movement ecology data allows us to answer questions about short-term movement patterns of Phyllomedusa burmeisteri. This is the first step to start understanding the spatial cognition of treefrogs from the Atlantic Forest and to fill gaps about life habits of these frogs. Information on the movement patterns of a species, as well as its home range can help to create conservation strategies, regarding the creation or delimitation of protected areas, for example.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the scientific evidence of nutritional interventions performed in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. DATA SOURCES: A systematic review was conducted in the MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO and Periódicos CAPES databases, using a search strategy to identify studies published between January 2003 and March 2018, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Were included studies that described nutritional interventions in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders and assessed autistic behavior and/or gastrointestinal symptoms. We excluded other review articles and studies that did not include a control group in the research design. The studies were reviewed for descriptive information, and the quality of evidence was assessed through the GRADE system. DATA SYNTHESIS: 18 studies were included in the review, being 16 randomized clinical trials, 1 case-control study and 1 open-label trial. As a result, the implementation of a gluten-free and casein-free diet was the most used intervention among the studies. Of the total, 10 studies showed a positive association of intervention with the evaluated results, while 8 did not find of a significant association. CONCLUSIONS: Although some authors report progress in the symptoms associated with autism in individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder undergoing nutritional interventions, there is little scientific evidence to support the use of nutritional supplements or dietary therapies in children and adolescents with autism.

ABSTRACT

In order to study data about suicide attempts and do the mapping of occurrence areas, it was developed an ecologic and exploring study, making use of techniques of geoprocessing, based on confirmed cases of suicide attempts. Cases of self-poisoning were included in the urban area of Campina Grande county, in the period of 2010-2013. A total of 446 suicide attempts were geo-referred, pointing up an incidence of 120 cases out of each 100,000 inhabitants. The sample was mostly feminine (66.4%), and 62.3% being up to 30 years old. Kernel's map remarked hot spot areas. Compared to surrounding areas the suicide risk of populations within the hot spots was increased (38%; Relative Risk = 1.38; p= 0.0029), with an average estimative of 165 suicide attempts out of 100,000 inhabitants. Through identification of hot spots and index of living conditions of the neighborhoods, it is possible to set priorities in terms of public policies for the prevention of suicide attempts and control of the marketing of substances that are potentially toxic.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Due to its frequency and morbidity, such as that caused by scorpions have achieved public health importance in certain regions of the world. The present exploratory ecological study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile and spatial distribution of scorpion stings in Campina Grande, State of Paraíba in Northeastern Brazil. METHODS: Geographical information system techniques were used to record the scorpion stings, and Google Earth software, Track Maker, and ArcGIS 10 Esri were used as geocoding databases. The Moran test was used to evaluate spatial correlation, and the Pearson chi-square test was used to analyze associations between scorpion stings and socioeconomic variables. RESULTS: The study evaluated 1,466 scorpion stings. Envenomations were more frequent among women (n = 908, 61.9%), and most patients were aged 13-28 years (n = 428, 29.2%). The Southern region of the city had the largest number of registered cases (n = 548, 37.4%), followed by the Western region (n = 510, 34.8%). CONCLUSIONS: Spatial analysis of scorpionism revealed an irregular occurrence in Campina Grande. Further, no association was observed between the socioeconomic factors analyzed and the geographic location of the scorpion envenomations. Detection of spatial areas with an increased risk of scorpionism can help prioritize adoption of preventive measures in these regions to reduce the associated incidence and morbidity.

ABSTRACT

The number of adult patients searching for orthodontic treatment to obtain both function and aesthetic results continues to increase. However, the orthodontic treatment of adult patients requires proper management and regular care, especially when the periodontium is compromised. A diagnosed periodontal condition is not a contraindication for orthodontic treatment as long as performed after rehabilitation and maintenance of periodontal health. The orthodontic treatment combined with periodontal satisfactory conditions allows to improve patient’s oral hygiene due to the correct alignment of teeth and restored function. However, the periodontal condition and its limitations determine the end of orthodontic treatment, as shown in this case report of an adult patient with reduced periodontal who initiated orthodontic treatment for severe crowding correction and concluded without aggravation or periodontal changes...

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the spatial distribution of tuberculosis in Crato, Ceará, Brazil, from 2002 to 2011, aiming to check for a point pattern. METHODS: This is an ecological, temporal trend and hybrid design study, with a quantitative approach. A total of 261 cases of tuberculosis were geo-referenced and 20 (7.1%) were considered as losses due to the lack of address. The profile of patients in 10 years of study was in accordance with the following pattern: men aged between 20 and 59 years, with low schooling, affected by the pulmonary form of tuberculosis and who were cured from the disease. RESULTS: The analysis of the spatial distribution of tuberculosis points out that in the period of study, new cases of the disease were not distributed on a regular basis, indicating a clustered spatial pattern, confirmed by the L-function. The map with the density of new cases estimated by the Kernel method showed that the "hot" areas are more concentrated in the vicinity of the central urban area. CONCLUSION: The study allowed pointing out areas of higher and lower concentration of tuberculosis, identifying the spatial pattern, but it also recognized that the disease has not reached all of the population groups with the same intensity. Those who were most vulnerable were the ones who lived in regions with higher population densities, precarious living conditions, and with intense flow of people.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to prepare inclusion complexes between red bell pepper pigments and ß-cyclodextrin using two different procedures (i.e., magnetic stirring and ultrasonic homogenisation), to characterise the prepared inclusion complexes and to evaluate the colour stability of a selected complex added to yogurt. The mass ratio of extract to ß-cyclodextrin was 1:4. The formed extract: ß-cyclodextrin complexes and a physical mixture of extract and ß-cyclodextrin were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, particle size distribution and Zeta potential. The obtained data showed that ultrasonic homogenisation resulted in better yield and inclusion efficiency compared to magnetic stirring. The yogurt with the added complex produced by ultrasonic homogenisation showed slower variations for the a(∗) (redness) and b(∗) (yellowness) indices compared to yogurt with added extract, indicating a higher protection of the colour during storage.

ABSTRACT

The variables considered were: income, age, gender, perceived health status, legal source service provider. RESULTS: 15 interviewed people reported that they were assisted by speech-language pathologists in May 2009, which represents 0.2% of Minas Gerais population (using the sample weight). 60% of these are males aged between 1 and 82 years and 75% reported good health. CONCLUSION: the most of the interviewed people assisted by speech-language pathologists were attended by the Unified Health System. There was a great variation in age, and 66% of youth and adults attended are literate. It was possible to notice a need for expansion of speech-language pathologist's assistance in Minas Gerais in order to attend the whole population, seeking the universality, integrity and equity. These Unified Health System principles are also the guide lines of health care in the Minas Gerais.
