ABSTRACT

Pre-operative electrocardiographic evaluations were done in 474 male and female dogs to analyze the frequency of electrocardiographic alterations and its relation with the surgical indication according to age, breed, weight, body score (obesity), and history and physical signs of cardiac diseases. The electrocardiographic alterations occurred in 220 (46 percent) animals, being more frequent in males (n=116; 52.7 percent). The increase in QRS duration was the most observed alteration (n=54; 24.5 percent). The electrocardiographic alterations in the pre-operative are common, which suggests that the performing of electrocardiographic exam in the pre-operative is independent of the age, weight, surgical problem, or signs of cardiopathy on clinical exam.

ABSTRACT

The authors present a case of a gastric adenocarcinoma in which the major manifestation was cutaneous metastases of the eyelids--in a review of the literature, no reports were found. Based upon this unusual case and in light of present knowledge, we decided to revise the concept of cutaneous metastases secondary to internal neoplasia, in particular, these with a gastric localization.

ABSTRACT

Infarction of the central nervous system secondary to embolism from a left atrial myxoma is a recognized phenomenon. However, a myxoma as the source of an embolus may be overlooked, if, during the evaluation of a patient with a stroke of unknown etiology, an index of suspicion is not present. We report a case of a 57-year old woman presenting three episodes of cerebral infarction always in the same brain territory, suggesting a carotid pathology. The physical examination of the patient only showed a loud S1 with no other sounds and neurologic alterations, namely, right hemiparesia and aphasia. Diagnosis was made by two-dimensional echocardiography and better delineation was obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient subsequently received a successful ressection of the myxoma. Eighteen months later the patient was well.

ABSTRACT

In this report we describe studies on the structures of the O-linked carbohydrate units in cell-surface glycoproteins of epimastigote forms of the G-strain of Trypanosoma cruzi. Mild alkaline reductive degradation of the 38/43 kDa glycoproteins resulted in beta-elimination of glycosylated threonine and/or serine residues, and the liberation of N-acetylglucosaminitol, galactobiosyl-, galactotriosyl-, galactotetraosyl- and galactopentaosyl-N-acetylglucosaminitol. The structures of these oligosaccharide alditols were established by n.m.r. spectroscopy and methylation analysis as: Galf beta 1-4(Galp beta 1-6)GlcNAc-ol; Galp beta 1-3Galp beta 1-6(Galf beta 1-4)GlcNAc-ol; [(Galp beta 1-3)(Galp beta 1-2)Galp beta 1-6](Galf beta 1-4)GlcNAc-ol; [(Galp beta 1-3)(Galp beta 1-2)Galp beta 1-6](Galp beta 1-2Galf beta 1-4)GlcNAc-ol.
