ABSTRACT
A case of subacute progressive spinal tetraparesis had myelographic evidence of cervical spinal cord swelling and a delayed metrizamide computed tomographic myelogram (MCTM) suggested cavitation within the swollen spinal cord. Surgical exploration of the cervical cord revealed inflammatory changes only. No syrinx or intramedullary tumour was found. The accumulation of metrizamide within the spinal cord, as demonstrated by MCTM, did not represent a syrinx or a cystic tumour, but more likely an area of inflammation. Because inflammatory myelopathy may simulate an intramedullary tumor or syrinx, careful analysis of all clinical and radiological information is necessary to help make a correct diagnosis.

Computerized tomography has revolutionized the investigation of head and neck tumors and so rapid are the advances in this field, reviews are often outdated at time of publication. Several cases are presented to demonstrate the value of computerized tomography in investigation of lesions involving the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, and soft tissues of the neck.

The discovery of diastematomyelia in a geriatric patient is a rare occurrence. A 76-year-old woman with this entity was not diagnosed until she developed superimposed motor neuron disease.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas produce radiographic changes which are sufficiently characteristic to render a diagnosis without resorting to biopsy. Computed tomography is also of value, particularly in following the response of these tumors to therapeutic irreadiation.

A number of cases are presented illustrating the value of computed tomography in the investigation of mass lesions involving the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, and soft tissues of the neck. Rapid advances in CT technology now underway will alter our approach to the investigation of certain diseases in these locations.

A number of cases are presented to illustrate the diagnostic effectiveness of computed tomography in the cervical spine and spinal cord, specifically in syringomyelia, spinal stenosis, and fractures. Certain limitations in the examination are also presented, and problems related to interpretation, particularly in regard to spinal stenosis, are discussed.

Paranasal sinus and related malignancies affect air-containing mucosal-lined bony structures which can only be studied by appropriate radiologic examination. Pre-treatment staging by radiologic study, primarily utilizing tomography with complex motion, is essential for election of proper treatment modalities. It is the purpose of this presentation to define the conventional tomographic and advanced radiologic modalities which can be used in paranasal sinus radiologic examinations. The indications for the studies as well as their limitations are demonstrated. Finally, the role of radiology in post-therapy evaluation is noted.
