ABSTRACT

The aim of this article was to analyse the dynamics of sexual offense reports in Colombia over the period between 2010 and 2022. For this, a mixed methodology was applied in the following phases: first, the Colombian National Police registry which included 286 604 sexual crimes reported in the aforementioned period was analysed. Then, a causal loop diagram of System Dynamics was designed to highlight the role of reporting sexual crimes in the Colombian Penal System. The main findings of this article include that 85.73 % of the complaints are mostly associated with women and 68 % of the victims are minors or adolescents of both sexes. It must be noted that Colombian legislation divides these crimes into those that are aggravated by violence and those that are not. It was also found that when the victim was a woman, the crimes occurred in a higher proportion with the aggravating factor of violence. It can also be concluded that during the COVID-19 pandemic confinement, there was a decrease in the number of sexual offense reports due to its negative effect on the possibility of adult women reporting crimes. In addition, it was found that it is imperative to direct the criminal policies towards the general positive prevention of sexual crimes, without instrumentalising individuals, and aimed at completing a detailed follow-up of complaints.

ABSTRACT

Cell division and cytoskeleton organization are fundamental processes participating in the development of Drosophila imaginal discs. In this manuscript we describe the phenotypes in the adult fly wing generated by knockdowns of 85% of Drosophila genes encoding proteins likely related to the regulation of cell division and cytoskeleton organization. We also compile a molecular classification of these proteins into classes that describe their expected or known main biochemical characteristics, as well as mRNA expression in the wing disc and likely protein subcellular localization for a subset of these genes. Finally, we analyze in more detail one protein family of cytoskeleton genes (Arp2/3 complex), and define the consequences of interfering with cell division for wing growth and patterning.

ABSTRACT

Chronic wounds cannot heal due to impairment of regeneration, mainly caused by the persistent infection of multispecies biofilms. Still, the effects of biofilm wound infection and its interaction with the host are not fully described. We aimed to study functional biofilms in physiological conditions in vitro, and their potential effects in health and regeneration in vivo. Therefore, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis were seeded in collagen-based scaffolds for dermal regeneration. After 24 h, scaffolds had bacterial loads depending on the initial inoculum, containing viable biofilms with antibiotic tolerance. Afterwards, scaffolds were implanted onto full skin wounds in mice, together with daily supervision and antibiotic treatment. Although all mice survived their health was affected, displaying fever and weight loss. After ten days, histomorphology of scaffolds showed high heterogeneity in samples and within groups. Wounds were strongly, mildly, or not infected according to colony forming units, and P. aeruginosa had higher identification frequency. Biofilm infection induced leucocyte infiltration and elevated interferon-γ and interleukin-10 in scaffolds, increase of size and weight of spleen and high systemic pro-calcitonin concentrations. This functional and implantable 3D biofilm model allows to study host response during infection, providing a useful tool for infected wounds therapy development.

ABSTRACT

Pediatric tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease and a hidden global epidemic. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis mortality in children under 15 years of age in Colombia in the period 2010-2018. A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted. The variables sex, age groups, and origin were studied. This study had 260 cases for analysis and was carried out in three phases. The first phase was the determination of the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The second phase was the construction of indicators by territorial entities. The third phase was stratification into four epidemiological situations according to the mortality rate and years of life lost. The median age was 7 years (range 0-14), 66.5% of cases were pulmonary tuberculosis (97.7% without bacteriological confirmation), 14.3781 years of life lost were recorded (95% CI: 142.811-168.333), and in children under 10-14 years, the loss was 110,057. Amazonas had the highest adjusted YLL rate (3979.7). In total, 36.4% of the territories had a high mortality, and 30.3% adjusted to the situation designated as 1. This is the first study that has used composite indicators to address the problem of premature mortality from childhood tuberculosis in Colombia. Our results allow us to specify that this disease remains a challenge for public health. It requires models of care and differential strategies by region. It also requires ensuring opportunities in diagnosis with sensitive methods, as well as intersectoral work for the optimal approach.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The water maintains a normal range in apparently healthy people, which changes with the existence of diverse diseases. Objective: To know how the values of total body water estimated by Kushner, Deurenberg and Heitman equations of total body water, differ regarding those obtained clinically by the method of bioelectric impedance at 50 kHz. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out, from April to December, 2018, in 62 individuals: 31 apparently healthy adults and 31 children and adolescents with different diseases, admitted to "Dr. Antonio María Béguez César" Southern Teaching Children Hospital in Santiago de Cuba (24 in the Miscellaneous Service and 7 in Oncopediatrics Service). The total body water and the bioelectric parameters were considered with the analyzer of bioelectric impedance Bodystat® 1500-MDD, at 50 kHz, for the right ipsilateral tetrapolar method. The approach of Bland-Altman was used, for 95% of confidence in order to know if Kushner, Deurenberg and Heitman equations could substitute the reference equation. Results: Kushner and Deurenberg equations of total body water didn't show significant differences regarding the reference equation, while Heitman equation presented significant differences related to the rest of the equations. The Bland-Altman method demonstrated that the equation of Kushner has higher concordance with the reference equation. Conclusions: Kushner equation has the highest accuracy for the estimate of total body water in healthy people and in those affected by diseases.

ABSTRACT

Mammary stroma is essential for epithelial morphogenesis and development. Indeed, postnatal mammary gland (MG) development is controlled locally by the repetitive and bi-directional cross-talk between the epithelial and the stromal compartment. However, the signalling pathways involved in stromal-epithelial communication are not entirely understood. Here, we identify Sfrp3 as a mediator of the stromal-epithelial communication that is required for normal mouse MG development. Using Drosophila wing imaginal disc, we demonstrate that Sfrp3 functions as an extracellular transporter of Wnts that facilitates their diffusion, and thus, their levels in the boundaries of different compartments. Indeed, loss of Sfrp3 in mice leads to an increase of ductal invasion and branching mirroring an early pregnancy state. Finally, we observe that loss of Sfrp3 predisposes for invasive breast cancer. Altogether, our study shows that Sfrp3 controls MG morphogenesis by modulating the stromal-epithelial cross-talk during pubertal development.

ABSTRACT

Electrochemical treatment has been suggested as an effective alternative to local cancer therapy. Nevertheless, its effectiveness decreases when highly aggressive primary tumors are treated. The aim of this research was to understand the growth kinetics of the highly aggressive and metastatic primary F3II tumor growing in male and female BALB/c/Cenp mice under electrochemical treatment. Different amounts of electric charge (6, 9, and 18 C) were used. Two electrodes were inserted into the base, perpendicular to the tumor's long axis, keeping about 1 cm distance between them. Results have shown that the F3II tumor is highly sensitive to direct current. The overall effectiveness (complete response + partial response) of this physical agent was ≥75.0% and observed in 59.3% (16/27) of treated F3II tumors. Complete remission of treated tumors was observed in 22.2% (6/27). An unexpected result was the death of 11 direct current-treated animals (eight females and three males). It is concluded that direct current may be addressed to significantly affect highly aggressive and metastatic primary tumor growth kinetics, including the tumor complete response. ABSTRACT
