ABSTRACT

The site-bond percolation problem in two-dimensional kagome lattices has been studied by means of theoretical modeling and numerical simulations. Motivated by considerations of cluster connectivity, two distinct schemes (denoted as S∩B and S∪B) have been considered. In S∩B (S∪B), two points are connected if a sequence of occupied sites and (or) bonds joins them. Analytical and simulation approaches, supplemented by analysis using finite-size scaling theory, were used to calculate the phase boundaries between the percolating and nonpercolating regions, thus determining the complete phase diagram of the system in the (p_{s},p_{b}) space. In the case of the S∩B model, the obtained results are in excellent agreement with previous theoretical and numerical predictions. In the case of the S∪B model, the limiting curve separating percolating and nonpercolating regions is reported here.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: A cross-sectional study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the usefulness of Doppler ultrasound with resistive index (RI) measure compared with renal scintigraphy with 99mTc-DTPA in children with unilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction. METHODS: The study included children under 15 years with a diagnosis of unilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction, healthy contralateral kidney with or without an antecedent of ureteropyeloplasty. The selected patients were sent to the Nuclear Medicine Department to carry out a renal scintigraphy with 99mTc-DTPA and days later were sent to the Radiology Department for the performance of Renal Doppler Ultrasound with RI. RESULTS: A total of 21 patients were included in the study, 15 males and 6 females, representing 71.4% and 28.6%, respectively. Mean age was 5.3 years. Only 3 had an antecedent of ureteropyeloplasty in the affected kidney. The scintigraphy reported data of unilateral obstruction in 18 patients, including the 3 patients with previous surgery. The average glomerular filtration rate (GFR) obtained with the scintigraphy was 100.28ml/min. The average GFR in affected kidneys was 43.03ml/min and 57.24ml/min in healthy kidneys (p<.001). Doppler ultrasound with RI reported ectasia in 100% of the affected kidneys and one normal contralateral kidney. The average RI in affected kidneys was 0.69mm/s and 0.50mm/s in healthy kidneys (p<.001). CONCLUSIONS: With the results obtained, we can suggest that ultrasound Doppler with measurement of RI can be an alternative tool to renal scintigraphy with 99mTc-DTPA in some cases.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Evaluating the winemaking stress tolerance of a set of both Saccharomyces eubayanus and Saccharomyces uvarum strains from diverse Patagonian habitats. METHODS AND RESULTS: Yeast strains growth was analysed under increasing ethanol concentrations; all of them were able to grow until 8% v/v ethanol. The effect of different temperature and pH conditions as well as at SO2 and hexose concentrations was evaluated by means of a central composite experimental design. Only two S. uvarum strains (NPCC 1289 and 1321) were able to grow in most stress conditions. Kinetic parameters analysed (µmax and λ) were statistically affected by temperature, pH and SO2 , but not influenced by sugar concentration. The obtained growth model was used for predicting optimal growth conditions for both strains: 20°C, 0% w/v SO2 and pH 4·5. CONCLUSIONS: Strains from human-associated environments (chichas) presented the highest diversity in the response to different stress factors. Two S. uvarum strains from chichas demonstrated to be the most tolerant to winemaking conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This work evidenced the potential use of two S. uvarum yeast strains as starter cultures in wines fermented at low temperatures. Saccharomyces eubayanus was significantly affected by winemaking stress conditions, limiting its use in this industry.

ABSTRACT

A general model of competitive binding in drug-interceptor-DNA systems has been developed in order to quantify both the interceptor and protector mechanisms. The model involves full parameterization of the basic equations governing the mutual competition between drugs binding to DNA and incorporates as partial cases various similar models existing in the literature. The generality of the model results from strict accounting of the statistical effects of the binding of the drug and interceptor with DNA according to the McGhee-von Hippel formalism, and to the strict treatment of hetero-association between the drug and interceptor, which includes formation of all possible types of self- and hetero-complexes in solution. Indirect experimental evidence is provided for the importance of the protector mechanism in drug-caffeine-DNA systems, which is sometimes ignored in the literature because of the small magnitude of the CAF-DNA binding constant.

ABSTRACT

The expression pattern of two calcium binding proteins (CaBP), calbindin D28k (CB) and parvalbumin (PV), in the superior colliculus (SC) of the adult rabbit, as well as the morphology of the immunoreactive cells were examined. The study was performed on 12 rabbits. Coronal sections from postmortem SC were analyzed by light microscopy, and drawings of CaBP-labeled cells were obtained using a drawing tube. No previous information is available on either the CB/PV expression or the morphology of CB/PV positive cells in the SC of the adult rabbit. Therefore, in this study we show that CB neurons and neuropil form three main tiers: the first located within the stratum zonale (SZ) and the upper part of the stratum griseum superficiale (SGS), the second located within the stratum griseum intermedium (SGI), and the third, located within the medial and central areas of the stratum griseum profundum (SGP). In contrast to this layer labeling, almost no CB-positivity is found within the other collicular layers. On the other hand, the densest concentration of PV labeled cells and terminals is found within a single dense tier that spanned the ventral part of the startum griseum superficiale (SGS) and the dorsal part of the stratum opticum (SO). Anti-PV neurons are also scattered through the deeper layers below the dense tier. In contrast, almost no anti-PV labeled neurons or neuropil are found within the stratum zonale (SZ) and upper SGS. This distribution represents a new pattern of sublamination in the SC of this species. All the previously described cell types in other mammals are observed in the rabbit SC: marginal cells, horizontal cells, pyriform cells, narrow-field vertical cells, wide-field vertical cells, and stellate/multipolar cells. Detailed drawings of all these cellular types are represented to show their complete morphology. The results of this study indicate that both CB and PV are present in a variety of neurons, which present a number of homologies between mammals, but have a different location and/or distribution, according to the different species. These findings are thus relevant to better understand the organisation of the SC in mammals.
