ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy during pregnancy. DESIGN: We used regular expressions to identify publicly available social media posts from pregnant people expressing at least one reason for their decision not to accept COVID-19 vaccine. SETTING: Two social media platforms - WhatToExpect and Twitter. SAMPLE: A total of 945 pregnant people in WhatToExpect (1017 posts) and 345 pregnant people in Twitter (435 tweets). METHODS: Two annotators manually coded posts according to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) working group's 3Cs vaccine hesitancy model (confidence, complacency and convenience barriers). Within each 3Cs we created subthemes that emerged from the data. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subthemes were derived according to the people's posting own words. RESULTS: Safety concerns were most common and largely linked to the perceived speed at which the vaccine was created and the lack of data about its safety in pregnancy. This led to a preference to wait until after the baby was born or to take other precautions instead. Complacency surrounded a belief that they are young and healthy or already had COVID-19. Misinformation led to false safety and efficacy allegations, or even conspiracy theories, and fed into creating confidence and complacency barriers. Convenience barriers (such as availability) were uncommon. CONCLUSION: The information in this study can be used to highlight the questions, fears and hesitations pregnant people have about the COVID-19 vaccine. Highlighting these hesitations can help public health campaigns and improve communication between healthcare professionals and patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods are increasingly being utilized to mine knowledge from unstructured health-related texts. Recent advances in noisy text processing techniques are enabling researchers and medical domain experts to go beyond the information encapsulated in published texts (e.g., clinical trials and systematic reviews) and structured questionnaires, and obtain perspectives from other unstructured sources such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and social media posts. Objectives: To review the recently published literature discussing the application of NLP techniques for mining health-related information from EHRs and social media posts. Methods: Literature review included the research published over the last five years based on searches of PubMed, conference proceedings, and the ACM Digital Library, as well as on relevant publications referenced in papers. We particularly focused on the techniques employed on EHRs and social media data. Results: A set of 62 studies involving EHRs and 87 studies involving social media matched our criteria and were included in this paper. We present the purposes of these studies, outline the key NLP contributions, and discuss the general trends observed in the field, the current state of research, and important outstanding problems. Conclusions: Over the recent years, there has been a continuing transition from lexical and rule-based systems to learning-based approaches, because of the growth of annotated data sets and advances in data science. For EHRs, publicly available annotated data is still scarce and this acts as an obstacle to research progress. On the contrary, research on social media mining has seen a rapid growth, particularly because the large amount of unlabeled data available via this resource compensates for the uncertainty inherent to the data. Effective mechanisms to filter out noise and for mapping social media expressions to standard medical concepts are crucial and latent research problems. Shared tasks and other competitive challenges have been driving factors behind the implementation of open systems, and they are likely to play an imperative role in the development of future systems.

ABSTRACT

Resumen: Las manifestaciones cardiacas en el paciente neurocrítico, en especial pacientes con hemorragia subaracnoidea y evento vascular cerebral, ha sido tema de investigación en los últimos años. La manifestación va desde cambios electrocardiográficos, elevación de biomarcadores y colapso hemodinámico hasta la muerte secundaria al descontrol del equilibrio de electrólitos y de catecolaminas circulantes. El propósito de este artículo es identificar a este tipo de pacientes y realizar un diagnóstico diferencial con el síndrome coronario agudo con elevación del ST que se manifiesta en pacientes neurocríticos.


Abstract: Cardiac manifestations in patients with brain injury, especially patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebral vascular event have been the subject of research in recent years. The presentation goes from electrocardiographic changes, elevated biomarkers, hemodynamic collapse to death secondary to lose control of electrolyte balance and circulating catecholamines. The purpose of reporting this case is to present this important differential diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome with ST elevation that occurs in neurocritical patients.

ABSTRACT

Mucor circinelloides transformants prototrophic to leucine and resistant to carboxine (Leu(+) Cbx(r)) have been obtained by treatment of protoplasts with plasmid constructs containing homologous leuA gene and adjacent autonomously replicating sequences (ARS) element combined with the Cbx(r)(carboxine-resistance) gene of Ustilago maydis and ARS sequences from this basidiomycete (plasmid pGG37) or from the 2 mu plasmid of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (plasmid pGG43). The presence in the same plasmid molecule of the M. circinelloides leuA gene and adjacent ARS element together with heterologous ARS elements produced an increase in the transformation frequency of about 65-120%. The presence of autoreplicating plasmid molecules in the transformants was demonstrated by mitotic stability experiments, by Southern analysis, and by the rescue of plasmids from transformed bacterial cells.

ABSTRACT

NAD-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity was detected mainly in the cytosol of aerobically cultured mycelium and in anaerobically grown yeast cells of Mucor circinelloides. ADH levels were about 2.5-fold higher in yeast cells than in mycelium; zymogram analysis suggested that the same ADH enzyme is produced in both developmental stages. The enzyme, named ADH1, was purified to homogeneity from yeast cells, using ion-exchange and affinity chromatography. The active ADH1 appears to be a homomeric tetramer of 37,500-kDa subunits. Km values obtained for acetaldehyde, ethanol, NADH and NAD+ indicated that in vivo the enzyme mainly serves to reduce acetaldehyde to ethanol. Amino acid sequences of internal peptides obtained from the purified ADH1 were used to design oligonucleotides that allowed the cloning of the corresponding cDNA by RT-PCR, and the characterization of the genomic DNA sequence. The adh1 ORF is interrupted by two small introns located towards the 5'-end. M. circinelloides adh1 encodes a protein of 348 amino acids, which display moderate to high overall identity to several hypothetical ADH enzymes from the related zygomycete Rhizopus oryzae. adh1 mRNA is expressed at similar levels in aerobic mycelium and anaerobic yeast cells. During exponential growth under aerobic conditions, the level of adh1 transcript was correlated with the glucose concentration in the growth medium.

ABSTRACT

This study determines ash, K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Cu, Pb, and Zn content in musts and wines of the DOC Tacoronte-Acentejo (Tenerife, Canary Islands) from two consecutive harvests. Samples were treated with HNO3 and H2O2. Na and K were determined by flame photometry and the remaining metals by air/acetilene flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Significant differences were observed in Na, Ca and Mg contents between both harvests, possibly due to climate conditions.
