ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The course of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is different in men and women. There are limited data in Latin America regarding COPD exacerbations (ECOPD) in women. This study aims to determine the sociodemographic and clinical profile of ECOPD adjusted by gender.METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical study of all patients hospitalised due to an ECOPD in a tertiary university hospital in Colombia between 2015 and 2019. A group comparison analysis was performed between male and female groups.RESULTS: A total of 81 patients met the inclusion criteria (35.8% were women). The mean age was 71.49 years. Most of the patients were GOLD (Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease) 3 and 4. A history of TB was present in 15% of our cohort. While the proportion of smokers was higher among men (OR 5.11; P = 0.013), exposure to wood smoke was significantly higher in women (OR 24; P < 0.001). Females were associated with a lower probability of having forced expiratory volume in 1 sec >0,87 L (OR 0.11; P = 0.013) and were associated with an increased probability of receiving inhaled corticosteroids during hospitalisation (OR 3.33; P = 0.023). No differences in terms of mortality or complications were found.CONCLUSION: Women with COPD are underrepresented in literature. This study was able to identify some factors related to female sex among patients hospitalised for severe ECOPD.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The diversity of larval digenetic trematodes can provide information on one or more intermediate hosts prior to maturation into the definitive host; on host activity and distribution; and in some cases, on environmental perturbations. In this context, the goal of the present study was to analyse the trematode larvae found in adult amphibians collected from the Argentinian Chaco Region. Few studies have been reported on the systematics of larval digeneans in amphibians. METHODS: A total of 167 specimens of frogs (Leptodactylus macrosternum, Leptodactylus latinasus, Lepidobatrachus laevis, Lepidobatrachus llanensis and Lysapsus limellum) and toads (Rhinella bergi) were examined for larval digeneans. Frogs and toads were collected in two Argentinian ecoregions (Dry Chaco and Humid Chaco); between June 2002 and December 2019. Morphology of each taxon was studied in detail using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: Fourteen different taxa of the families Diplostomidae (Alariinae gen sp., Didelphodiplostomum sp., Pharingostomoides sp. and Tylodelphys sp.), Proterodiplostomidae (Heterodiplostomum lanceolatum), and Strigeidae (Strigea spp.) were found infecting the body cavity, mesentery, muscle, fluid in the spinal cord canal, and cranial cavity of amphibians. All species are described and illustrated, and their life cycles are briefly discussed. CONCLUSION: These infections provide new information on the morphology, morphometry, and composition of the diversity of mesocercariae and metacercariae in amphibians, thus contributing to the knowledge of potential intermediate hosts. In addition, our results serve as an indicator of parasite and host biodiversity in different ecoregions of the Gran Chaco.

ABSTRACT

Parapharyngodon politoedi n. sp. is described here, based on specimens found in the large intestines of Osteocephalus taurinus from the Caxiuanã National Forest, State of Pará, Brazil. The new species is assigned to Parapharyngodon based on the presence of non-embryonated eggs with sub-terminal opercula, when in the ovijector. Parapharyngodon politoedi belongs to a group of species with three pairs of cloacal papillae and differs from its congeners by morphometric aspects, such as the length of the spicule, and the combination of the following morphological characters: ovaries never encircling the oesophagus, tail shape in females, cloacal lips, sharply pointed spicule and presence of genital cone. This is the second species of nematode reported to parasitize O. taurinus and the eleventh species of Parapharyngodon from hylids in the Neotropical region.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Attempts have been made to improve nerve conduits in peripheral nerve reconstruction. We investigated the potential therapeutic effect of a vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), a neuropeptide with neuroprotective, trophic and developmental regulatory actions, in peripheral nerve regeneration in a severe model of nerve injury that was repaired with nerve conduits. APPROACH: The sciatic nerve of each male Wistar rat was transected unilaterally at 10 mm and then repaired with Dl-lactic-ε-caprolactone conduits. The rats were treated locally with saline, with the VIP, with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) or with ASCs that were transduced with the VIP-expressing lentivirus. The rats with the transected nerve, with no repairs, were used as untreated controls. At 12 weeks post-surgery, we assessed their limb function by measuring the ankle stance angle and the percentage of their muscle mass reduction, and we evaluated the histopathology, immunohistochemistry and morphometry of the myelinated fibers. MAIN RESULTS: The rats that received a single injection of VIP-expressing ASCs showed a significant functional recovery in the ankle stance angle (p = 0.049) and a higher number of myelinated fibers in the middle and distal segments of the operated nerve versus the other groups (p = 0.046). SIGNIFICANCE: These results suggest that utilization of a cellular substrate, plus a VIP source, is a promising method for enhancing nerve regeneration using Dl-lactic-ε-caprolactone conduits and that this method represents a potential useful clinical approach to repairing peripheral nerve damage.

ABSTRACT

The quasi-equilibrium states of an observed quantum system involve as many constants of motion as the dimension of the operator basis which spans the blocks of all the degenerate eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian that drives the system dynamics, however, the possibility of observing such quasi-invariants in solid-like spin systems in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is not a strictly exact prediction. The aim of this work is to provide experimental evidence of several quasi-invariants, in the proton NMR of small spin clusters, like nematic liquid crystal molecules, in which the use of thermodynamic arguments is not justified. We explore the spin states prepared with the Jeener-Broekaert pulse sequence by analyzing the time-domain signals yielded by this sequence as a function of the preparation times, in a variety of dipolar networks, solids, and liquid crystals. We observe that the signals can be explained with two dipolar quasi-invariants only within a range of short preparation times, however at longer times liquid crystal signals show an echo-like behaviour whose description requires assuming more quasi-invariants. We study the multiple quantum coherence content of such signals on a basis orthogonal to the z-basis and see that such states involve a significant number of correlated spins. Therefore, we show that the NMR signals within the whole preparation time-scale can only be reconstructed by assuming the occurrence of multiple quasi-invariants which we experimentally isolate.

ABSTRACT

The main goals of this study were to compare the richness of parasitic trematodes in amphibians with diverse habits (terrestrial, fossorial, semi-aquatic and arboreal), and to evaluate whether the composition of the trematode community is determined by ecological relationships. Specimens were collected between April 2001 and December 2006 from a common area (30 ha) in Corrientes Province, Argentina. Trematodes of amphibians in this area comprised a total of 19 species, and were dominated by common species. Larval trematodes presented highest species richness, with the metacercaria of Bursotrema tetracotyloides being dominant in the majority (7/9, 78%) of the parasite communities. Adults of the trematode Catadiscus inopinatus were dominant in the majority (6/9, 67%) of amphibians. The amphibians Leptodactylus latinasus, Leptodactylus bufonius and Scinax nasicus presented a high diversity of trematodes, whereas Leptodactylus chaquensis had the lowest diversity even though it presented with the highest species richness. The patterns of similarity among amphibian species showed groups linking with their habitats. Leptodactilid amphibians, with a generalist diet and an active foraging strategy showed highest infection rates with adult trematodes. The mean richness of trematode species related to host's habitat preferences was higher in semi-aquatic amphibians. Results suggest that semi-aquatic amphibians, present in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, present a greater diversity of parasites as they have a higher rate of exposure to a wider range of prey species and, hence, to diverse infective states. The trematode composition is related to the diets and mobility of the host, and habitat.

ABSTRACT

Starting from the hypothesis that the decay of coherent signals observed in 1H NMR experiments is driven by quantum interference, irreversible decoherence, and nonidealities in the experiment, we design an experiment to isolate and identify the irreversible attenuation of multiple-quantum coherences toward quasiequilibrium states of dipolar order in nematic liquid crystals (LCs). The experiment combines the well-known "magic sandwich" pulse sequence with preparation of dipolar ordered states and encoding of multiple-quantum coherences. The spin system composed of the dipole-coupled protons of a LC molecule provides an example of a small cluster of strongly interacting spins. We study decoherence rates under a sequence that reverses time evolution with the secular dipolar Hamiltonian to compensate coherent evolution of a closed quantum system. In this way, the time scale is made evident where irreversible decoherence takes place, providing insight into the nature of the processes responsible for the attainment of quasiequilibrium. The behavior of single- and double-quantum-coherence amplitudes with reversal time is interpreted as evidence of the quantum character (as opposed to stochastic character) of the processes that drive irreversible decoherence. The experimental method proposed is useful for probing the action of the environment on materials with quantum information processing potential.

ABSTRACT

Five species of amphibians, Leptodactylus podicipinus, Scinax acuminatus, S. nasicus, Rhinella fernandezae and Pseudis paradoxa, were collected in Corrientes province, Argentina and searched for larval nematodes. All larval nematodes were found as cysts in the serous of the stomach of hosts. Were identified one superfamily, Seuratoidea; one genus, Spiroxys (Superfamily Gnathostomatoidea) and one family, Rhabdochonidae (Superfamily Thelazioidea). We present a description and illustrations of these taxa. These nematodes have an indirect life cycle and amphibians are infected by consuming invertebrate, the intermediate hosts. The genus Spiroxys and superfamily Seuratoidea were reported for the first time for Argentinean amphibians.

ABSTRACT

The main goal of this study was to evaluate the relative influence of season, year of study, host body size, and host sex on abundance of helminth species parasitic in the frog Scinax nasicus. A total of 273 frogs was collected between December 2004 and November 2006 over all seasons in Corrientes City, Province of Corrientes, Argentina. Helminth community included 21 taxa, and was dominated particularly by larval trematodes. Infected frogs harboured a maximum of 7 species. Host sex and season played no significant effect in determining infracommunity parasite species abundance. Similarly, species richness was similar for both host sexes, and across time (year and season). However, occurrence of the parasites Opisthogonimus sp. 2 and Travtrema aff. stenocotyle greatly varied over time. Host body size was the main factor for determining infrapopulation structure of Centrorhynchus sp. Species richness was significantly and positively correlated with host body size. Strong associations were observed mainly between metacercariae of some species. The transmission strategies of parasites suggest that this hylid acquires infections by ingestion of infective larvae and through direct contact with larval parasites from aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

ABSTRACT

Two proton quasi-equilibrium states were previously observed in nematic liquid crystals, namely the S and W quasi-invariants. Even though the experimental evidence suggested that they originate in a partition of the spin dipolar energy into a strong and a weak part, respectively, from a theoretical viewpoint, the existence of an appropriate energy scale which allows such energy separation remains to be confirmed and a representation of the quasi-invariants is still to be given. We compare the dipolar NMR signals yielded both by the Jeener-Broekaert (JB) experiment as a function of the preparation time and the free evolution of the double quantum coherence (DQC) spectra excited from the S state, with numerical calculations carried out from first principles under different models for the dipolar quasi-invariants, in a 10-spin cluster which represents the 5CB (4(')-pentyl-4-biphenyl-carbonitrile) molecule. The calculated signals qualitatively agree with the experiments and the DQC spectra as a function of the single-quantum detection time are sensible enough to the different models to allow both to probe the physical nature of the initial dipolar-ordered state and to assign a subset of dipolar interactions to each constant of motion, which are compatible with the experiments. As a criterion for selecting a suitable quasi-equilibrium model of the 5CB molecule, we impose on the time evolution operator consistency with the occurrence of two dipolar quasi-invariants, that is, the calculated spectra must be unaffected by truncation of non-secular terms of the weaker dipolar energy. We find that defining the S quasi-invariant as the subset of the dipolar interactions of each proton with its two nearest neighbours yields a realistic characterization of the dipolar constants of motion in 5CB. We conclude that the proton-spin system of the 5CB molecule admits a partition of the dipolar energy into a bilinear strong and a multiple-spin weak contributions therefore providing two orthogonal constants of motion, which can be prepared and observed by means of the JB experiment. This feature, which implies the existence of two timescales of very different nature in the proton-spin dynamics, is ultimately dictated by the topology of the spin distribution in the dipole network and can be expected in other liquid crystals. Knowledge of the nature of the dipolar quasi-invariants will be useful in studies of dipolar-order relaxation, decoherence and multiple quantum NMR experiments where the initial state is a dipolar-ordered one.

ABSTRACT

Sixty-five specimens of the frog Leptodactylus chaquensis were infected by 2 Glypthelmins species (Glypthelmins repandum: 41%, and Glypthelmins palmipedis: 38%) in the small intestine. This study was designed to determine the site specificity of both species along the length of the small intestine by analyzing the distribution, niche overlap, morphological characteristics, and population dynamics. The location of G. palmipedis is very restricted, with the core infection site in the anterior small intestine. In contrast, G. repandum can be characterized as having an expanded niche within the small intestine. In single infections and with different intensities, individuals of both parasitic species showed preference for the anterior small intestine. In concurrent infections and with different intensities, the distribution of G. palmipedis did not change when G. repandum was present; however, displacement of G. repandum toward the middle of the small intestine was observed. Glypthelmins species used the same microhabitat and presumably the same food resource and were generally found to overlap more than expected by chance. This finding suggests the possibility of different feeding mechanisms given by differences in their pharynx size by 37%. Also, the coexistence of these could be associated with the differentiation of realized niches.

ABSTRACT

Previous work showed that by means of the Jeener-Broekaert (JB) experiment, two quasiequilibrium states can be selectively prepared in the proton spin system of thermotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) in a strong magnetic field. The similarity of the experimental results obtained in a variety of LC in a broad Larmor frequency range, with crystal hydrates, supports the assumption that also in LC the two spin reservoirs, into which the Zeeman order is transferred, originate in the dipolar energy and that they are associated with a separation in energy scales: A constant of motion related to the stronger dipolar interactions (S), and a second one (W) corresponding to the secular part of the weaker dipolar interactions with regard to the Zeeman and the strong dipolar part. We study the nature of these quasi-invariants in nematic 5CB (4(')-pentyl-4-biphenyl-carbonitrile) and measure their relaxation times by encoding the multiple-quantum coherences of the states following the JB pulse pair on two orthogonal bases, Z and X. The experiments were also performed in powder adamantane at 301 K which is used as a reference compound having only one dipolar quasi-invariant. We show that the evolution of the quantum states during the buildup of the quasiequilibrium state in 5CB prepared under the S condition is similar to the case of powder adamantane and that their quasiequilibrium density operators have the same tensor structure. In contrast, the second constant of motion, whose explicit operator form is not known, involves a richer composition of multiple-quantum coherences of even order on the X basis, in consistency with the truncation inherent in its definition. We exploited the exclusive presence of coherences of +/-4,+/-6,+/-8, besides 0 and +/-2 under the W condition to measure the spin-lattice relaxation time T(W) accurately, so avoiding experimental difficulties that usually impair dipolar order relaxation measurement such as Zeeman contamination at high fields and also superposition of the different quasi-invariants. This procedure opens the possibility of measuring the spin-lattice relaxation of a quasi-invariant independent of the Zeeman and S reservoirs, so incorporating a new relaxation parameter useful for studying the complex molecular dynamics in mesophases. In fact, we report the first measurement of T(W) in a LC at high magnetic fields. Comparison of the obtained value with the one corresponding to a lower field (16 MHz) points out that the relaxation of the W-order strongly depends on the intensity of the external magnetic field, similarly to the case of the S reservoir, indicating that the relaxation of the W-quasi-invariant is also governed by the cooperative molecular motions.

ABSTRACT

This article presents a survey of metacercariae found in tadpoles of 6 amphibian species collected near the city of Corrientes, Corrientes Province, Argentina. Larval digenetic trematodes of the following species were found: (1) Travtrema aff. stenocotyle Cohn, 1902 (Plagiorchiidae) from Physalaemus santafecinus, Physalaemus albonotatus, Odontophrynus americanus, Elachistocleis bicolor, Scinax nasicus, and Leptodactylus latinasus; (2) Styphlodora sp. (Plagiorchiidae) from O. americanus and E. bicolor; (3) Opisthogonimus sp. (Opisthogonimidae) from O. americanus and P. santafecinus; (4) Lophosicyadiplostomum aff. nephrocystis (Lutz, 1928) (Diplostomidae) from S. nasicus; (5) Bursotrema tetracotyloides Szidat, 1960 (Diplostomidae) from P. santafecinus and S. nasicus; and (6) an unknown echinostomatid species from O. americanus and S. nasicus. Metacercariae of these species are reported for the first time in tadpoles of the 6 amphibian species examined. All species are described and illustrated, and their life cycles are briefly discussed. These larvae were found infecting different body parts of tadpoles, but no relationship was observed between the metacercariae and amphibian malformations.

ABSTRACT

Zygomycosis, an infection that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, is becoming common in immunocompromised patients. Posaconazole is a new extended-spectrum azole antifungal that has demonstrated in vitro and in vivo activity against zygomycetes. This report provides the results from the first 24 patients with active zygomycosis who were enrolled in two open-label, nonrandomized, multicentered compassionate trials that evaluated oral posaconazole as salvage therapy for invasive fungal infections. Posaconazole was usually given as an oral suspension of 200 mg four times a day or 400 mg twice a day. Eleven (46%) of the infections were rhinocerebral. Duration of posaconazole therapy ranged from 8 to 1,004 days (mean, 292 days; median, 182 days). Rates of successful treatment (complete cure and partial response) were 79% in 19 subjects with zygomycosis refractory to standard therapy and 80% in 5 subjects with intolerance to standard therapy. Overall, 19 of 24 subjects (79%) survived infection. Survival was also associated with surgical resection of affected tissue and stabilization or improvement of the subjects' underlying illnesses. Failures either had worsening of underlying illnesses or requested all therapy withdrawn; none of the failures received more than 31 days of posaconazole. Posaconazole oral solution was well tolerated and was discontinued in only one subject due to a drug rash. Posaconazole appears promising as an oral therapy for zygomycosis in patients who receive required surgery and control their underlying illness.

ABSTRACT

The high-temperature Redfield spin-lattice relaxation theory is used for calculating the relaxation times of the different dipolar quasi-invariants in an eight-spin system which represents methyl deuterated para-azoxyanisole (PAAd6) in the nematic phase. According to previous experiments, this system can be considered as composed of weakly coupled pairs of strongly interacting spins, the ortho protons of the aromatic rings, thus, it possesses four quasi-invariants of the motion: Zeeman, dipolar intrapair and interpair, and singlet orders. We write the set of coupled differential equations which describe the relaxation of the generalized inverse spin temperatures of the four quasi-invariants. The relaxation constants are then calculated in terms of experimental two-spin spectral densities of the lattice motions. The relation between the multispin and the two-spin spectral densities is also deduced. Calculation shows that the Zeeman and singlet quasi-invariants are uncoupled from the dipolar ones, and that the relaxation time of the singlet order is much longer than those of the Zeeman and dipolar orders. The calculated cross relaxation rate between the dipolar orders through the lattice is small enough to be observable in the experiment. We also show that the nonsecular term associated with the collective motions dominates relaxation of the intrapair and interpair energies in PAAd6, while the local motions do not play a significant role, in qualitative agreement with the reported experimental behavior. The dipolar relaxation times predicted by the theory are significantly larger than the experimental ones, the difference being even more pronounced for the interpair quasi-invariant. We show that the discrepancy cannot be overcome neither by resorting to a realistic model for the spin system nor considering the various possible cross-relaxation pathways among the quasi-invariants. This feature points out the high- temperature approximation as a source of the discrepancy. We discuss the effect that slow and ultraslow molecular modes could have on the relaxation of the dipolar order.
