ABSTRACT

Giant cell tumors are an uncommon neoplasm; most are found in the long bones, formed by endochondral ossification. This article presents a case of giant cell tumor of the infratemporal fossa, which by radiographic and clinical examination appears to have originated in the squamous portion of the temporal bone.

ABSTRACT

We present unusual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a case of neurosarcoidosis. MRI revealed a large solitary suprasellar mass which resembled a neoplasm. The lesion was isointense and hyperintense on T1-weighted images, hypointense on T2-weighted images, and intensely homogeneously enhancing. Biopsy revealed a polymorphous inflammatory lesion with giant cells, which extended from the hypothalamus, consistent with neurosarcoidosis. The diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis should be considered in patients presenting with large midline tumor-like suprasellar mass lesions.

ABSTRACT

The infection control department at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls, New York, has developed an innovative approach to decreasing nosocomial infections. By following up on the infections that occur on nursing units, nurses actively work to prevent their occurrence. The approach utilizes nursing accountability, continuing staff education, and documentation, with positive results.

ABSTRACT

Electron microscopy of renal biopsy specimens obtained from three patients revealed typical laminated electron-dense bodies (myeloid bodies) previously believed to be diagnostic of Fabry's disease. None of the patients manifested clinical features characteristic of this disorder, and in one patient leukocyte alpha-galactosidase levels were normal. In comparison with patients with either the heterozygous or homozygous expression of Fabry's disease, in our patients the myeloid bodies were much fewer in number. These observations suggest that the findings of occasional myeloid bodies in renal biopsy specimens should be interpreted with caution.

ABSTRACT

Liposarcomas of the head and neck are rare. There have been 25 previously reported patients in the literature. Four patients with head and neck liposarcomas, recently treated by the Head and Neck Surgery Service, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, are presented. Less than half of reported patients were noted to be living without evidence of disease. Prognosis generally corresponds to the cell type of the tumor. Intraoral, cheek and orbital tumors seem to have a worse prognosis compared to neck tumors. Wide local excision remains the treatment of choice. Advances in surgical techniques have allowed adequate therapy for most head and neck liposarcomas. Advanced lesions should be managed by conservative surgery and radical radiation therapy.
