ABSTRACT

This prospective study showed that scores on a socioenvironmental stress questionnaire were related to numbers of crying spells and to estriol levels in pregnancy. Estriol levels in turn were correlated with numbers of antenatal and postnatal crying spells. Stress, hormonal response in pregnancy, and crying during pregnancy each contributed independently to predicting postpartum emotional adjustment.
