ABSTRACT

The process of CO2 and H2O adsorption on the surface of nano-oxide semiconductors is important in the overall performance of artificial photosynthesis and other applications. In this study, we explored the thermodynamics of CO2 and H2O adsorption on TiO2 as a function of surface chemistry. We applied gas adsorption calorimetry to investigate the energetics of adsorption of those molecules on the surface of anatase nanoparticles. In an attempt to increase TiO2 surface affinity to CO2 and H2O, TiO2 was doped with alkaline earth metals (MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO) by manipulating the chemical synthesis. Adsorption studies using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy at different temperatures indicate that due to the segregation of alkaline earth metals on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles, both CO2 and subsequent H2O adsorption amounts could be increased. CO2 adsorbs in two different manners, forming carbonates which can be removed at temperatures lower than 700 °C, and a more stable linear adsorption that remains even at 700 °C. Additionally to the surface energetic effects, doping also increased specific surface area, resulting in further improvement in net gas adsorption.

ABSTRACT

The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR) strain has been suggested as an animal model of schizophrenia, considering that adult SHRs display behavioral abnormalities that mimic the cognitive, psychotic and negative symptoms of the disease and are characteristic of its animal models. SHRs display: (I) deficits in fear conditioning and latent inhibition (modeling cognitive impairments), (II) deficit in prepulse inhibition of startle reflex (reflecting a deficit in sensorimotor gating, and associated with psychotic symptoms), (III) diminished social behavior (modeling negative symptoms) and (IV) hyperlocomotion (modeling the hyperactivity of the dopaminergic mesolimbic system/ psychotic symptoms). These behavioral abnormalities are reversed specifically by the administration of antipsychotic drugs. Here, we performed a behavioral characterization of young (27-50 days old) SHRs in order to investigate potential early behavioral abnormalities resembling the prodromal phase of schizophrenia. When compared to Wistar rats, young SHRs did not display hyperlocomotion or PPI deficit, but exhibited diminished social interaction and impaired fear conditioning and latent inhibition. These findings are in accordance with the clinical course of schizophrenia: manifestation of social and cognitive impairments and absence of full-blown psychotic symptoms in the prodromal phase. The present data reinforce the SHR strain as a model of schizophrenia, expanding its validity to the prodromal phase of the disorder.

ABSTRACT

Questionnaires that assess symptoms of schizophrenia patients undergo strict statistical validation, often using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). CFA allows testing the existence of a trait that both collectively explains the symptoms and gathers the information in a single general index. In rodents, some behaviors are used to model psychiatric symptoms, but no single test or paradigm adequately captures the disorder's phenotype in toto. This work investigated the existence of a behavioral trait in the SHR strain underlying five behavioral tasks used in schizophrenia animal studies and altered in this strain: locomotor activity, rearing behavior, social interaction, prepulse inhibition of startle and contextual fear conditioning. The analysis was conducted on a sample of Wistar (n = 290) and Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHRs, n = 290). CFA showed the existence of a continuous trait in both strains, and higher values among SHRs. This work is the first to demonstrate the existence of a schizophrenia-like trait in an animal model. We suggest that using CFA to evaluate behavioral parameters in animals might facilitate the pre-clinical investigation of psychiatric disorders, diminishing the gap between animal and human studies.

ABSTRACT

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychotomimetic compound from Cannabis sativa that presents antipsychotic, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In Parkinson's disease patients, CBD is able to attenuate the psychotic symptoms induced by L-DOPA and to improve quality of life. Repeated administration of reserpine in rodents induces motor impairments that are accompanied by cognitive deficits, and has been applied to model both tardive dyskinesia and Parkinson's disease. The present study investigated whether CBD administration would attenuate reserpine-induced motor and cognitive impairments in rats. Male Wistar rats received four injections of CBD (0.5 or 5 mg/kg) or vehicle (days 2-5). On days 3 and 5, animals received also one injection of 1 mg/kg reserpine or vehicle. Locomotor activity, vacuous chewing movements, and catalepsy were assessed from day 1 to day 7. On days 8 and 9, we evaluated animals' performance on the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task, for learning/memory assessment. CBD (0.5 and 5 mg/kg) attenuated the increase in catalepsy behavior and in oral movements - but not the decrease in locomotion - induced by reserpine. CBD (0.5 mg/kg) also ameliorated the reserpine-induced memory deficit in the discriminative avoidance task. Our data show that CBD is able to attenuate motor and cognitive impairments induced by reserpine, suggesting the use of this compound in the pharmacotherapy of Parkinson's disease and tardive dyskinesia.

ABSTRACT

Adsorption of H2O and CO2 on zinc oxide surfaces was studied by gas adsorption calorimetry on nanocrystalline samples prepared by laser evaporation in oxygen to minimize surface impurities and degassed at 450 °C. Differential enthalpies of H2O and CO2 chemisorption are in the range -150 ±10 kJ/mol and -110 ±10 kJ/mol up to a coverage of 2 molecules per nm(2). Integral enthalpy of chemisorption for H2O is -96.8 ±2.5 kJ/mol at 5.6 H2O/nm(2) when enthalpy of water condensation is reached, and for CO2 is -96.6 ±2.5 kJ/mol at 2.6 CO2/nm(2) when adsorption ceases. These values are consistent with those reported for ZnO prepared by other methods after similar degas conditions. The similar energetics suggests possible competition of CO2 and H2O for binding to ZnO surfaces. Exposure of bulk and nanocrystalline ZnO with preadsorbed CO2 to water vapor results in partial displacement of CO2 by H2O. In contrast, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) indicates that a small fraction of CO2 is retained on ZnO surfaces up to 800 °C, under conditions where all H2O is desorbed, with adsorption energies near -200 kJ/mol. Although molecular mechanisms of adsorption were not studied, the thermodynamic data are consistent with dissociative adsorption of H2O at low coverage and with several different modes of CO2 binding.

ABSTRACT

The enthalpy of adsorption of CO2 on an environmentally friendly metal-organic framework, CD-MOF-2, has been determined directly for the first time using adsorption calorimetry at 25 °C. This calorimetric methodology provides a much more accurate and model-independent measurement of adsorption enthalpy than that obtained by calculation from the adsorption isotherms, especially for systems showing complex and strongly exothermic adsorption behavior. The differential enthalpy of CO2 adsorption shows enthalpy values in line with chemisorption behavior. At near-zero coverage, an irreversible binding event with an enthalpy of -113.5 kJ/mol CO2 is observed, which is followed by a reversible -65.4 kJ/mol binding event. These enthalpies are assigned to adsorption on more and less reactive hydroxyl groups, respectively. Further, a second plateau shows an enthalpy of -40.1 kJ/mol and is indicative of physisorbed CO2. The calorimetric data confirm the presence of at least two energetically distinct binding sites for chemisorbed CO2 on CD-MOF-2.

ABSTRACT

The influence of Sn in Fe2O3 thin films is addressed. The presence of the tin ions decreases the Fe2O3 particle sizes and surface roughness decreasing of the films' surface is observed as a consequence. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements together with literature results support this phenomenon to be related to the segregation of the additive onto the surface and consequently surface energy decrease, which constitutes the driving force for the microstructure modification, similarly to results previously obtained for powders with same compositions. The effect of the anions introduced in the system as counter-ions of the precursors is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

The standard methods for obtaining adsorption isotherms on colloidal suspensions are usually very time consuming and involve a large number of steps and assumptions that increase the experimental errors. In this work, an alternative method is proposed to evaluate the adsorption behavior of electrosteric-stabilized systems based on electrokinetic sonic amplitude signal measurements. The new method, entitled "zeta-sorption", is noticeably less time-consuming when compared to conventional procedures but showed great precision and reliability confirmed by comparison with data obtained from conventional routes on alumina-polyacrylate and alumina-citric acid aqueous suspensions. The experimental conditions that restrict the applicability of the new method were identified and justified by discussing the possible ion exchanges.
