ABSTRACT

This study presents a novel method leveraging surface wave-assisted photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) to construct physical unclonable functions (PUFs). PUFs exploit inherent physical variations to generate unique Challenge-Response pairs, which are critical for hardware security and arise from manufacturing discrepancies, device characteristics, or timing deviations. We explore PSHE generation-based PUF design, expanding existing design possibilities. With recent applications in precise sensing and computing, PSHE offers promising performance metrics for our proposed PUFs, including an inter-Hamming distance of 47.50% , an average proportion of unique responses of 62.5% , and a Pearson correlation coefficient of - 0.198. The PUF token demonstrates robustness to simulated noise. Additionally, we evaluate security using a machine learning-based attack model, employing a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) regression model with a randomized search method. The average accuracy of successful attack prediction is 9.70% for the selected dataset. Our novel PUF token exhibits high non-linearity due to the PSHE effect, resilience to MLP-based attacks, and sensitivity to process variation.

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the performance of a contact-mode Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) utilizing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with nano gratings as a dielectric in a metal-dielectric configuration. The evaluation encompasses the impact of gratings, tapping frequency, various load conditions, and contact area on the TENG performance. The fabrication involves spin-coating PDMS onto a master mold to create the device. Experimental measurements reveal a significant enhancement of 97% in open-circuit voltage by introducing gratings on PDMS. Furthermore, as the tapping frequency increases from 1 Hz to 3 Hz, there is a corresponding rise of 108% in output voltage. The influence of load resistance on TENG output performance demonstrates its ability to drive different loads efficiently. Moreover, enlarging the contact area of the device substantially increases the open-circuit voltage. A device with a 400 mm2 contact area can generate a voltage of 80 V at a low frequency of 3 Hz, indicating the importance of considering device size and contact area for specific applications. A practical circuit integrating a TENG with a full-wave bridge rectifier demonstrates energy harvesting capabilities by successfully illuminating a light-emitting diode (LED) and charging various capacitors. The fabricated devices exhibit better performance along with a cost-effective and easy fabrication process.

ABSTRACT

In this manuscript, what we believe to be a novel hyperbolic-graded topological nano-photonic resonator structure is proposed to excite robust topological edge states. The graded refractive index is realized by considering a porous silicon material having a deliberately modulated local refractive index. The introduction of grading effectively modifies its dispersion characteristics leading to distinctive topological properties. This results in excitation of a topologically protected edge state (TES) having significantly higher interface electric field intensity at an operational wavelength of 1521 nm. Additionally, the impact of interface layer thicknesses on the excitation of these TES is thoroughly investigated. Finally, the structure's capability to be used as a refractive index sensor is also demonstrated. The analytical results demonstrate an average sensitivity of 852.14 nm/RIU, coupled with a quality factor of 4019.23 and a figure of merit (FOM) of 1277.13 RIU-1. With its remarkable performance metrics, the proposed device holds significant promise for accurately detecting and sensing biochemical samples with very high efficiency.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pain is a significant global public health concern, particularly among individuals aged 45 and above. Its impact on the overall lifestyle of the individuals varies depending on the affected anatomical parts. Despite its widespread impact, there is limited awareness of the attributes of pain, making effective pain management challenging, particularly in India. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and variation in pain in different anatomical sites among middle-aged and older adults in India. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed, utilising data from the first wave of the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), 2017-2018. The age-sex adjusted prevalence of pain by anatomical sites (the back, joints, and ankles) was estimated using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: 47% of individuals aged 45 years and above reported joint pain, 31% reported back pain and 20% suffered from ankle or foot pain. The prevalence of pain at all the anatomical sites increased with age and was reported higher among females. Relative to respondents aged 45-59 years, those aged 75 years and older exhibited a 41% higher likelihood of experiencing back pain (AOR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.19-1.67), a 67% higher likelihood of joint pain (AOR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.49-1.89), and a 32% higher likelihood of ankle/foot pain (AOR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.16-1.50). In comparison to males, females had a 56% higher likelihood of encountering back pain (AOR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.40-1.74), a 38% higher likelihood of joint pain (AOR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.27-1.50), and a 35% higher likelihood of ankle/foot pain (AOR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.17-1.57). We also found significant regional variations in pain prevalence, with higher rates in the mountainous regions of India. CONCLUSION: This research highlights the high burden of pain in major anatomical sites among middle-aged and older adults in India and emphasises the need for increased awareness and effective pain management strategies.

ABSTRACT

This work presents a dielectric material-based optical Tamm state (OTS) excitation technique with modified dispersion characteristics for photonic spin hall effect (PSHE) enhancement. The dispersion analysis of the structure is carried out to validate OTS's localization and corresponding PSHE generation for a given polarization at 632.8 nm incident wavelength. The exceptional points are optimized by considering thickness-dependent angular dispersion analysis. PSHE-based transverse displacement (PSHE-TD) is dependent on the defect layer thickness. The optimized structure provides 10.73 [Formula: see text] (or 6.78 [Formula: see text]m) PSHE-TD at an incidence angle of 41.86[Formula: see text]. The PSHE-TD of the optimized structure is sufficiently high due to the much narrower resonance than the plasmonic-based structures. Further, the structure's potential to function as a PSHE-TD-based optical sensor is assessed. The optimized structure shows an analytical average sensitivity of about 43,789 [Formula: see text]m/RIU showing its capability to detect the analytes with refractive index variations in the [Formula: see text] range. The structure demonstrates a three-time sensitivity improvement compared to similar resonance designs. Considering only dielectric materials in the proposed structure and considerably enhanced PSHE-TD, the development of highly efficient PSHE-TD-assisted commercial structures is anticipated.

ABSTRACT

The continuous emergence of resistance against most frontline antimalarial drugs has led to countless deaths in malaria-endemic countries, counting 619,000 deaths in 2021, with mutation in drug targets being the sole cause. As mutation is correlated frequently with fitness cost, the likelihood of mutation emergence in multiple targets at a time is extremely low. Hence, multitargeting compounds may seem promising to address drug resistance issues with additional benefits like increased efficacy, improved safety profile, and the requirement of fewer pills compared to traditional single and combinational drugs. In this study, we attempted to use the High Throughput Virtual Screening approach to predict multitarget inhibitors against six chemically validated Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) kinases (PfPKG, PfMAP2, PfCDPK4, PfTMK, PfPK5, PfPI4K), resulting in 21 multitargeting hits. The molecular dynamic simulation of the top six complexes (Myricetin-MAP2, Quercetin-CDPK4, Myricetin-TMK, Quercetin-PKG, Salidroside-PK5, and Salidroside-PI4K) showed stable interactions. Moreover, hierarchical clustering reveals the structural divergence of the compounds from the existing antimalarials, indicating less chance of cross-resistance. Additionally, the top three hits were validated through parasite growth inhibition assays, with quercetin and myricetin exhibiting an IC50 value of 1.84 and 3.93 µM, respectively.

ABSTRACT

In this manuscript, a heterostructure-based topological nanophotonic structure is proposed for improved sensing performance. The topological effect is realized by connecting two dissimilar one-dimensional photonic crystal structures having overlapped photonic bandgaps. The structural parameters are optimized to regulate and alter the dispersion characteristics, which results in the opposite Zak phases. This demonstrates a robust topologsical interface state excitation at a 1737 nm operating wavelength. Further, a topological cavity structure having resonance mode at 1659 nm is formed by replacing the interface layers with a defect layer. The mode excitation is confirmed by analyzing the electric field confinement at the interface. The sensing capability of the structure is analytically evaluated by infiltrating different analytes within the cavity. The analytical results demonstrate the device's average sensitivity of around 774 nm/Refractive index unit (RIU) along with an average high Q-factor and figure of merit of around 5.2 × 104 and 2.6234 × 104 RIU-1, respectively. Because of the higher interface mode field confinement, the proposed structure exhibits a 92% higher sensitivity, 98% improved Quality factor, 206% improvement in figure of merit, and 86% higher interface field confinement than conventional Fabry-Perot resonator structures. Thus, the proposed topological cavity structure shows its broad sensing ability (Refractive Index: 1.3-1.6) along with a low-cost, simple fabrication and characterization process, promoting the development of highly sensitive planner nanophotonic devices.

BACKGROUND: Understanding health and developing trends among the older population is essential for countries to tackle the challenges of an ageing population and formulate relevant policies. Facilitating healthy ageing is an essential strategy to address the issues arising among the aged. The concept of healthy ageing is defined as "the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in old age (WHO)," where "functional ability comprises the health-related attributes that enable people to be and to do what they have reason to value." People have different ageing pathways depending on their genetic profile and different life course health risk exposures. Therefore, ageing, more specifically healthy ageing, largely depends on individual lifestyle choices. This study examines the association between lifestyle behaviours and healthy ageing among older adults in India. METHODS: Based on the first round of LASI in 2017-18, we conceptualized healthy ageing within the WHO functional ability framework. We developed a Healthy Ageing Index (HAI), which incorporates physiological health, functional health, cognitive functions, psychological well-being, and social engagement. We used principal component analysis to generate a composite score for HAI. We then used multiple linear regression to demonstrate the association between lifestyle behaviours and HAI. RESULT: The mean HAI was 82.8%, indicating that the study population is healthier. The study findings show that smoking and drinking are more prevalent among males, rural residents, illiterate individuals, those currently employed, and those belonging to the poorest wealth quintile. Engaging in physical activity is associated with better health outcomes (ß = 2.36; 95% CI: 2.16-2.56). CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle to achieve healthy ageing. Health behaviours are modifiable, so our results highlight the need for policy interventions to promote a healthier lifestyle from an early age.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common types of liver cancer; accounts for 75-85% of cases. The treatment and management of HCC involve different sanative options like surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, etc. Recently, various advancements have been introduced for the diagnosis and targeting of hepatic tumor cells. Among these, biomarkers are considered the primary source for the diagnosis and differentiation of tumor cells. With the advancement in the field of nanotechnology, different types of nanocarriers have been witnessed in tumor targeting. Nanocarriers such as nanoparticles, liposomes, polymeric micelles, nanofibers, etc. are readily prepared for effective tumor targeting with minimal side-effects. The emergence of various approaches tends to improve the effectiveness of these nanocarriers as demonstrated in ample clinical trials. This review focuses on the significant role of carbohydrates such as mannose, galactose, fructose, etc. in the development, diagnosis, and therapy of HCC. Hence, the current focus of this review is to acknowledge various perspectives regarding the occurrence, diagnosis, treatment, and management of HCC.

ABSTRACT

This manuscript presents a dielectric resonator structure with altered dispersion characteristics to enhance the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). The structural parameters are optimized to enhance the PSHE at 632.8 nm operating wavelength. The thickness-dependent angular dispersion analysis is carried out to optimize the structure and obtain the exceptional points. The PSHE-induced spin splitting shows a high sensitivity to the optical thickness of the defect layer. This gives a maximum PSHE-based transverse displacement (PSHE-TD) of around 56.66 times the operating wavelength at an incidence angle of 61.68°. Moreover, the structure's capability as a PSHE-based refractive index sensor is also evaluated. The analytical results demonstrate an average sensitivity of around 33,720 µm/RIU. The structure exhibits around five times higher PSHE-TD and approximately 150% improvement in sensitivity than the recently reported values in lossy mode resonance structures. Due to the purely dielectric material-assisted PhC resonator configurations and significantly higher PSHE-TD, the development of low-cost PSHE-based devices for commercial applications is envisaged.

Psoriasis is characterized as chronic inflammatory disorder of skin having unregulated hyperproliferation and shedding of plaques. As per first line treatment methotrexate is the most widely used cytotoxic drug for psoriasis. It shows anti-proliferative effect with hDHFR while anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive action is due to AICART. Serious hepatotoxic effects are recognized with long-term treatment of methotrexate. In this study, in silico technique is used in this work to find Dual-Acting Methotrexate-like molecules with increased efficacy and decreased toxicity. Structure-based virtual screening assisted by a fragment-based method against a library of chemicals that are similar to methotrexate revealing 36 and 27 potential inhibitors of hDHFR and AICART respectively. Further, based on dock score, binding energy, molecular interactions, and ADME/T analysis compound 135565151 was chosen for dynamic stability evaluation. Overall, these findings provided information on possible methotrexate analogues for the treatment of psoriasis that had lower hepatotoxicity.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

ABSTRACT

In this manuscript, a novel photonic crystal resonator (PhCR) structure having an exponentially graded refractive index profile is proposed to regulate and alter the dispersion characteristics for the first time. The structure comprises silicon material, where porosity is deliberately introduced to modulate the refractive index profile locally. The structural parameters are optimized to have a resonant wavelength of 1550 nm. Further, the impact of various parameters like incidence angle, defect layer thickness, and analyte infiltration on device performance is evaluated. Finally, the sensing capability of the proposed structure is compared with the conventional step index-based devices. The proposed structure exhibits an average sensitivity of 54.16 nm/RIU and 500.12 nm/RIU for step index and exponentially graded index structures. This exhibits the generation of a lower energy resonating mode having 825% higher sensitivity than conventional resonator structures. Moreover, the graded index structures show a 45% higher field confinement than the conventional PhCR structure.

BACKGROUND: India is passing through a phase of demographic and epidemiological transition where ageing and chronic morbidities are being more common. Though studies have examined the prevalence and risk factors of pain and other chronic morbidities, nationally representative research examining the association of pain and quality of life (QoL) is limited in India. This study examines the association between pain and QoL among middle-aged and older adults in India. METHODS: This study uses the data from wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) conducted in 2017-18. This study is restricted to 58,328 individuals from all states (except Sikkim), aged 45 years and above. The quality of life is measured in 6 domains (physical, psychological, social, environment, general health and life satisfaction) with 21 variables that range from 0 to 100. The principal component analysis was used to generate a composite score of QoL and the multiple linear regression was used to show the association between pain and quality of life. RESULTS: It is estimated that approximately 37% of Indian middle-aged and older populations were often troubled with pain. Pain prevalence increase with age and is more common among older adults aged 75 + years (43.37%; 95% CI, 40.95-45.80), and female (41.38%; 95% CI, 39.36-43.39). The average QoL score among those with pain was 81.6 compared to 85.2 among those without pain. QoL was lower among elderly age 75 and above, females, rural residents and illiterates. Controlling for socio-demographic factors, pain reduces the QoL by 2.57 points (ß= -2.57; 95% CI, -3.02 - -2.11). CONCLUSION: Pain reduces the quality of life among middle-aged adults and older adults in India. This evidence could potentially help the policymakers to consider pain as a significant determinant of quality of life in India.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we present a radio frequency (RF) assessment of the nanoscale gallium nitride-silicon-on-insulator fin field-effect transistor (GaN-SOI-FinFET). All the performances of the device were compared with GaN-FinFET and conventional FinFET (Conv. FinFET) simultaneously. All the results show that the power gains significantly improved in terms of Gma, Gms, Stern stability factor (SS), GMT, and intrinsic delay in comparison with conventional FinFET. Current gain and unilateral power gain were also evaluated for the extraction of fT (cut-off frequency) and fMAX, respectively. fT and fMAX were enhanced by 88.8% and 94.6%, respectively. This analysis was performed at several THz frequencies. Further, the parametric assessment was also performed in terms of gate length and oxide thickness to find the optimized value of gate length and oxide thickness. The implementation of GaN in the channel reduces the parasitic capacitance and paves the way for high-performance RF applications.

Over the last 50 years, the number of patients with mycotic infections has gradually increased. Amphotericin-B is a gold-standard drug used in serious systemic fungal infections. However, limited solubility and permeability are challenging issues associated with Amphotericin-B. Chemical modification is one of the ways to get its broader applicability and improved physicochemical properties. The review article provides a comprehensive overview of the chemical modification approach for investigating the mechanism of action, biological activity, bioavailability, and toxicity of Amphotericin B. Further, several drug delivery approaches have also been utilized to provide better therapeutic outcomes. This gives an overview of chemical approaches for exploring various factors associated with Amphotericin B and information on its drug delivery approaches for improved biopharmaceutical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Gliomas are the most prevailing intracranial tumors, which account for approximately 36% of the primary brain tumors of glial cells. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) possesses a higher degree of malignancy among different gliomas. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain against infections and toxic substances by preventing foreign molecules or unwanted cells from entering the brain parenchyma. Nano-carriers such as liposomes, nanoparticles, dendrimers, etc. boost the brain permeability of various anticancer drugs or other drugs. The favorable properties like small size, better solubility, and the modifiable surface of dendrimers have proven their broad applicability in the better management of GBM. However, in vitro and in vivo toxicities caused by dendrimers have been a significant concern. The presence of multiple functionalities on the surface of dendrimers enables the grafting of target ligand and/or therapeutic moieties. Surface engineering improves certain properties like targeting efficiency, pharmacokinetic profile, therapeutic effect, and toxicity reduction. This review will be focused on the role of different surface-modified dendrimers in the effective management of GBM.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Over two-fifth of middle-aged adults and elderly (45 +) in India are hypertensive. Though studies examined prevalence, awareness and control of hypertension, little is known on the association of hypertension with work status in India. This study examines the variations of hypertension by types of work among middle-aged adults and the elderly in India. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Longitudinal Aging Survey of India (LASI), Wave 1, 2017-18, and analysis was restricted to participants aged 45 and above with complete information on employment and blood pressure (N = 59,196). RESULTS: We estimated the adjusted prevalence of hypertension at 49.2% (95% CI, 47.8-50.6) among the ever worked but not currently working and 44.5% (95% CI, 43.1-45.8) among currently working. Among eight broad categories of the currently working population, the adjusted estimates of hypertension were highest among legislators, senior officials and managers (71.5%; 95% CI, 41.9-101.0), followed by service and sales worker workers (44.7%; 95% CI, 41.2-48.2) and least among the professionals (37.1%; 95% CI, 27.1-47.2). Relative to never worked, legislators, senior officials and managers were twice more likely [adjusted OR (AOR) 2.00; 95% CI, 0.74-5.39] to be hypertensive, followed by plant and machine operators (AOR 1.33; 95% CI, 1.04-1.71). The odds of being hypertensive was least among those engaged in professional (engineering, health, education) activities. The other significant predictors are age, sex, residence, education level, household economic condition, family history of hypertension, chronic disease and depression. CONCLUSION: The risk of hypertension varies with the types of work in which older Indians are engaged. Awareness and treatment of hypertension in high-risk occupation are recommended.

ABSTRACT

Dendrimers are three dimensional, multifunctional polymeric structures which are composed of a core and branches emanating from these structures, resembling a tree. Here, we review the key highlights of the dendrimers for diagnostic uses as MRI contrast agents, X-ray computed tomography and particularly for cancer treatment as an effective carrier for drug delivery and in boron capture therapy. We will discuss how dendrimers represent a new class of carriers that are able to deliver drugs effectively and in a sustained manner to the target tumor sites. Dendrimers are being utilized to a variety of cancer therapies to improve the safety and effectiveness of anticancer therapeutics. This review will also investigates the benefits utilizing dendrimers for cancer diagnosis and therapy.

ABSTRACT

Since the discovery of liposomes, these vesicular carriers have attracted the researchers from all the vistas of the biomedical domain to explore and harness the potential benefits. Many novel drug delivery-based products have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and other federal agencies of the globe, out of which the major share is of the liposomes and related carriers. Taking cognizance of it, the US-FDA has recently come up with 'Guidance for Industry on Liposome Drug Products'. In cancer management, chemotherapy is the most frequently employed approach which is still not devoid of untoward challenges and side effects. In chemotherapy, the taxanes, esp. Docetaxel shares a huge percentage in the prescription pattern. Also, the first marketed liposomal product was encasing one drug of this category. Henceforth, the present review will highlight the advances in the delivery of taxanes, in particular docetaxel, with an emphasis on the need, success and pharmacoeconomic aspects of such vesicular-carrier mediated docetaxel delivery.

ABSTRACT

Non-invasive mucosal immune response plays an important role in controlling various infections through mucosal route. Therefore, the appropriate induction of effective immune response should be elicited after immunization. Currently, a lot of strategies have been investigated to enhance the mucosal immunity including microparticles, liposomes, virosomes, cochleates and aracheosomes. These carriers due to tunable and unique physicochemical properties offer the possibility for better antigen presentation by appropriate cells, being more effective to induce a comparable immune response. The objective of this review is to give an overview of novel strategies for the delivery of vaccines through the mucosal route.
