ABSTRACT

The data obtained from studies of 84 patients with polyps of the stomach and colonic were used to consider the capacities of transabdominal and transrectal ultrasound studies and their diagnostic efficiency in the diagnosis of polyps of the stomach and colon. The ultrasound semiotics of polyps of the gastric and colon was described. A place of transabdominal ultrasound sonography (US) in the algorithm of radiation and endoscopic studies was established. This investigation led to the conclusion that transabdominal US, along with indirect diagnosis, permits solution of number of fundamental problems facing prior to polypectomy--these are primarily to define the nature of a detected polyp (epithelial and non-epithelial), based on an analysis of the laminar structure of the wall of an organ at the polyp base, a possible polyp malignancy and the degree of invasion into the depths of the gastric wall, as well as to detect a feeding vessel (in the CDC mode) and to predict the likelihood of possible complications. It is advisable to use transabdominal US in a complex of diagnostic techniques for polyps of the stomach and colon.

ABSTRACT

The results of examination of 156 patients were used to consider whether radiation and endoscopic techniques might be used in the differential diagnosis of gastric ulcerations. The necessity of their complex use is shown. Evidence is provided for that the understanding of intramural changes at the site of ulceration should underlie the interpretation of visual changes in the gastric mucosa. An algorithm has been developed for the rational and effective use of radiation and endoscopic techniques in the differential diagnosis of gastric ulcerations. The algorithm is shown to be highly effective in the correct interpretation of the pattern of an identified ulceration (98.4% specificity). Ultrasound and computed tomographic semiotics of benign and malignant gastric ulcerations is presented.

ABSTRACT

By analyzing the findings in 72 patients with gastric cancer, the authors show the potentialities of noninvasive techniques of radiation diagnosis (transabdominal ultrasonography (USG) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) in the preoperative evaluation of the T-stage of gastric cancer. Ultrasound and computed tomographic semiotics of intramural invasion of gastric carcinoma is made. Ultrasonography was found to have the highest specificity in detecting early-stage gastric cancers prior to computed tomography. In the authors' opinion, a complex use of the data obtained by these techniques reveals the degree of invasion of gastric carcinoma and its extent with high precision. Transabdominal USG and CT should rank with the initial methods used for diagnosing gastric cancer. Transabdominal USG should be most expediently used as an initial technique of the above studies, by taking into account its wide accessibility, easiness-to-use, and lack of radiation load.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and sixty eight IHD patients were studied by a "level of neurotization" (LN) scale, the Mini-Mult and the original rating scale. Of them, 76 were followed-up for 1-4 mont. The obtained data indicated validity and reliability of the LN scale which can be used successfully as an additional method for measurement of level for psychic state change evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Epidermal growth factor (12 ng per 1 g of body mass) and insulin (0.004 units per 1 g of body mass) were introduced into X-ray irradiated (1.8, 2.12, 2.7 Cr) mice. Four hours later bone marrow was extracted from femurs to be introduced into syngenic lethally irradiated recipients. On the 11th day after transplantation the number of exogenic spleen colonies was computed. The epidermal growth factor, in combination with insulin, stimulates in the organism the restoration of hemopoietic colony-forming cells after radiation injury.

ABSTRACT

Sixty-three coronary patients were subjected to mental testing, using the SMALL test and Kettell's 16 PF test. Positive test results were significantly more frequent in patients of the second and third functional classes with neurotic anxiety-depressive disturbances. In patients of the fourth functional class, the results of the tests were not dependent on their psychological status. Patients with the most marked neurotic disturbances may develop an anginal attack accompanied with ischemic ECG changes during the mental test.

ABSTRACT

The method of flow cytofluorometry was used to determine the distribution of murine bone marrow cells along the phases of the cell cycle in normal mice (CBA X C57Bl) F1 after the whole body equal X-ray irradiation, after irradiation in combination with burn, after administration of imidazole, insulin and caffeine, and after the treatment of cells by acetylcholine. In non-irradiated mice insulin and caffeine induced an increased ratio of bone marrow cells in G0 and G1 and a reduced one in S phase. Imidazole increased the number of G2- and M-cells by 1.5 times only in regenerating bone marrow of irradiated mice. After X-ray irradiation of mice at a dose of 2.3 Gy, reducing the percentage of cells in S and increasing it in G2 and M phases, insulin, acetylcholine and caffeine were found to decrease the number of cells in G2 and M phases: besides, caffeine and acetylcholine increased the percentage of S-phase cells. The data obtained are discussed in terms of possibility of normalization of bone marrow cell proliferation broken after exposure to physical stress-factors.

ABSTRACT

The psychological effect of short exercise on a bicycle trainer (30 sessions over 10 weeks) was assessed in 20 postmyocardial infarction patients, while spontaneous mental changes were assessed in 21 untrained controls. Exercise was started 2 to 2.5 months after the attack. Mental states were assessed by the brief multifactorial personality assessment questionary (the BMPAQ test) and the neuroticism scale (NS). Physical exercise contributed to a more rapid psychological rehabilitation, as evidenced by the BMPAQ and NS testing. The mentality of the control patients improved less rapidly as shown by the BMPAQ test, while their NS parameters remained unchanged. Mental parameters of trained and untrained patients were basically similar within 12 months, after myocardial infarction as evidenced by the BMPAQ test.
