ABSTRACT

At the moment there are more than 40 framesaws in use in Croatia, and many framesaw operators have a serious spine problem. Complex measurements have been carried out in order to determine the vibration level on the operator's seat. This paper reports and analyzes the measurement results of the whole-body vibration transmitted to a framesaw operator during an ordinary working day. Vibrations were measured at all operations performed during the normal framesaw working cycle. For all the measurements frequency spectra were obtained and the results graphically represented according to the ISO 2631-1-1986 recommendations. The weighted r.m.s. acceleration was also calculated and the duration of each single framesaw operation was measured. The energy-equivalent vibration level, corresponding to the total duration of exposure was calculated, too. The values so obtained were compared with the daily exposure limits according to the ISO 2631-1-1997. The measurement results showed that the framesaw operator, under the given measuring conditions, is exposed to a higher vibration level than the given daily exposure limits. Also, the energy-equivalent vibration level calculated according to the guidelines given in the new ISO 2631-1-1997 is higher than the limits recommended for an effective 4-h daily exposure.

ABSTRACT

We describe a 50-year-old, previously healthy male with metastatic pulmonary blastoma associated with hypercalcemic and hyperosmolar complications which caused his death after 5 days. The primary tumor consisted of epithelial [cytokeratin, beta-hCG CEA, neuron-specific enolase (NSE)-positive] and mesenchymal components (beta-hCG, vimentin, NSE-positive, while the metastases had only a mesenchymal component.

ABSTRACT

The relationship between pathoanatomical changes in bronchial arteries and occurrence of chronic obstructive bronchitis (COB) and bronchial asthma (BA) was studied. Pathoanatomical changes in bronchial arteries were more frequently found in patients with COB and BA than in patients with other bronchopulmonary diseases, i.e. that bronchial circulation in patients with COB and BA is impaired. Due to these findings a theory of vasculary-metabolic explanation of pathogenesis of bronchial hyperresponsiveness is based on hypoperfusion and hypoxia of cellular structures in the bronchial wall. Hypoxia is supposed to be an endogenous change in the bronchial wall which causes bronchial hyperresponsiveness in various exogenous stimulants.

ABSTRACT

Case histories of 3 patients with primary mucociliary transport failure are described. Two of them had immotile cilia syndrome and one cystic fibrosis. In all three patients the same clinical picture was found and they had the same treatment, although the etiology of diseases was not the same. The treatment in two patients was not much successful since they had associated respiratory failure.

ABSTRACT

There is often a misguide of chronic bronchitis and passive pulmonary hypertension. In 42 patients with chronic bronchitis a revision of the results was made and it was found that in 28 (67%) patients the former diagnosis of chronic bronchitis was confirmed, while in 8 (19%) patients a new diagnosis was established--a passive pulmonary hypertension and in 6 (14%) patients a combination of chronic bronchitis and passive pulmonary hypertension was found. It is considered that the symptoms like cough, sputum and dyspnea as well as the similar physical finding may lead the clinician to change the diagnoses.

ABSTRACT

The authors examined blood pO2 and pCO2 in patients whose noses had been tamponaded because of epistaxis, nasal surgery and in animals whose noses had been artificially obstructed. A marked fall of pO2 and an increase of pCO2 were found as well as certain differences of the gas quantities between the first and second groups of patients. For this phenomenon an explanation is given.
