ABSTRACT

Public health is increasingly engaging with multi-faceted obesity prevention efforts. Although parks represent key community assets for broader public health, they may not be distributed equitably and associations with obesity are equivocal. We investigated park access and quality relative to deprivation and obesity with individual-level data from the Yorkshire Health Study. Compared to the least deprived areas, the moderately and most deprived areas had a greater park access and park quality in terms of features and amenities. However, parks in the moderately and most deprived areas also had the most safety concerns and incivilities. Although deprivation was associated with obesity, contrary to current policy guidance, both park access and quality appear less important for understanding variations in obesity within this study. Although sub-group analyses by deprivation tertile revealed that low quality park amenities in highly and moderately deprived areas may be important for understanding obesity prevalence, all other associations were non-significant.

ABSTRACT

An experimental approach to the analysis of charge, magnetic and orbital ordering in 3d transition-metal oxides is presented. The technique combines two important components: azimuthal rotations around the Bragg wavevector and polarization analysis of the Bragg intensities in the range 500-900 eV. The polarization analysis is performed using graded multilayers, which are translated and rotated in the vacuum chamber. It is shown why these two components are important to determine the origin of the Bragg scattered signals and how they allow us to separate the different contributions. Examples are given for the oxygen K and the Mn, Co, Ni and Cu L(2,3)-edges, and the advantages and drawbacks of this experimental technique are discussed.

ABSTRACT

An experimental investigation of W/C, W/Ti, Ni/Ti, and Ni/V multilayers is presented that uses synchrotron radiation in the soft-x-ray energy region between 100 and 1500 eV with special emphasison the water window. The multilayers were designed as normal incidence reflectors and for polarimetry purposes around the Brewster angle. Both reflection and transmission multilayers were prepared for use as linear polarizers and phase retarders, respectively, to produce or analyze circularly polarized light. Their period was optimized to achieve maximum reflectance at the 1s absorption edge of C (284 eV) and the 2p edges of Ti (454 eV) and V (512 eV), respectively. At these edges the multilayers show an enhancement of reflectance and energy resolution that is in accordance with theoretical calculations.

ABSTRACT

Recent, NMR and precipitation, studies of molecular recognition of proline-rich proteins and peptides by plant polyphenols are described and rationalized. The action of polysaccharides and caseins in the moderation of the astringent response, which is engendered by polyphenols present in foodstuffs and beverages, is described. The possible influence of plant cell wall glycoproteins on the process of lignification is discussed in the light of the observed affinity of phenolic substrates for prolyl residues in protein structures.

ABSTRACT

The application of sublesional injections by using Triamcinolone Acetonide crystal suspension represents a method offering the possibility to achieve a maximum of effectiveness with relatively small doses. Selectively injected in the affected tissue or the immediate neighbourhood respectively the health structures can be preserved largely from undesirable side effects. In diseases chronically relapsing longer symptomless remissions can be reached than with conventional topical methods.

ABSTRACT

Topisolon (Desoximetasone) has been used under clinical conditions on 42 patients with acute and chronic dermatoses. This was a comparative trial on symetric areas. Topisolon with the test name A 41 304 has been compared to an 0,1% triamcinolon-acetonide ointment. Topisolon showed a quick onset of action. After 14 days of treatment a good result has been seen in 88% of the cases and in only 5% the effect has been moderate. The drug has been used in psoriasis vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, and lichen ruber. No side effects or irritations have been seen except one case of candidiasis. On five diabetics treated no influence on blood sugar level could be seen.
