ABSTRACT

We report evidence of intermittent behavior between chaotic and self-organized patterns while writing lines with a femtosecond lasers on the surface of a fused silica substrate. The patterns are accompanied by resolidified sub-microspheres and non-aligned grating lamellae. We observe that such dynamic behavior exhibits a striking similarity with the fluctuating content of a queuing system which alternate between random busy and idle periods.

ABSTRACT

The power imbalance between different waveguide outputs is compensated by manipulating the dispersion of the guided propagation in the multimode interference (MMI) region. This is attainable using a tapered region at the beginning of the MMI region that has been verified through simulation and experiment. From this, the fabrication tolerance for the diameters of holes in a tapered 1×3 photonic crystal waveguide (PhCW) splitter is relaxed up to a range of at least 27 nm. The output power is well-balanced to within 1 dB. The effective bandwidth of the splitters shifts only around 13 nm, for a reduction of 10 nm in the diameter of the PhCW holes. The optimized component is an outstanding ultracompact 1×3 splitter for the photonic integrated circuit (PIC).

ABSTRACT

Based on a series of 1x2 beam splitters, novel direct excitation of slow-light from input- to output-region in photonic crystal waveguides is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The study shows that the slow-light excitation provides over 50 nm bandwidth for TE-polarized light splitting between two output ports, and co-exists together with self-imaging leading to ~20 nm extra bandwidth. The intensity of the direct excitation is qualitatively explained by the overlap integral of the magnetic fields between the ground input- and excited output-modes. The direct excitation of slow light is practically lossless compared with transmission in a W1 photonic crystal waveguides, which broadens the application-field for slow-light and further minimizes the size of a 1x2 splitter.

ABSTRACT

Fibre Bragg gratings inscribed with the point-by-point method using a Ti-sapphire femtosecond laser operating at 800 nm are shown to display strong increasing attenuation towards shorter wavelengths with a large and spectrally sharp recovery observed below 400 nm. The origin of this loss is shown to be Mie scattering, and the sharp recovery in the transmission results from wavelength dependent scattering within the numerical aperture of the core. The permanent losses from these Type II gratings have implications for high temperature sensors and fibre lasers.

ABSTRACT

A new class of refractive index sensors using solid core photonic crystal fibres isdemonstrated. Coherent scattering at the cladding lattice is used to optically characterizematerials inserted into the fibre holes. The liquid to solid phase transition of water uponfreezing to ice 1h is characterized by determining the refractive index.

ABSTRACT

A Bragg grating in a photonic crystal fiber was written and its dependence with temperature and strain analyzed. The two observed Bragg wavelengths correspond to a fundamental and a higher-order mode in the optical fiber. The temperature and strain calibration curves for both modes are measured and found to be distinct. The general properties of gratings in these fibers, and their implications, are enunciated.

ABSTRACT

A distributed feedback laser is fabricated in Er3+-doped photonic crystal fibre. Preferential single-mode lasing is obtained with no special consideration of polarisation issues. The results demonstrate practical implementation of a multi-photon writing process for complex structures in these optical fibres. No hydrogen loading and no germanium are involved.

ABSTRACT

A water core photonic crystal Fresnel fiber exploiting a hole distribution on zone plates of a cylindrical waveguide was developed and characterized. This fiber has similar guiding properties as the pristine air-hole guiding fiber although a large loss edge ~900nm is observed indicating that the bandgap associated with Fresnel guidance has shifted to longer wavelengths. The absorption bands of the water in the region of the NIR were observed. The application to biosensing is discussed.

ABSTRACT

The inscription of type IIA fiber Bragg gratings in standard boron-codoped germanosilicate fiber has been demonstrated to show marked differences from that reported in the literature. These gratings were subjected to high temperatures, and their decay behavior was evaluated. Gratings resistant to heat up to 800 degrees C for a moderate length of time are demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

A novel grating-writing interferometer is demonstrated. This interferometer is compact, stable, and tunable well over 1000 nm and does not suffer from the inherent path-length differences that are present in other methods. It allows for high-quality gratings to be inscribed by preventing light from unwanted orders from affecting the fringe pattern. This technique is used to introduce a novel method of apodization based on removing the Fresnel end reflections in a grating. The experimental evidence proves the concept and shows that the technique is potentially useful for Bragg-grating inscription.

The intrinsic 244-nm photosensitivity of boron-codoped germanosilicate optical fibers is enhanced by 355-nm hypersensitization. Hypersensitization through standard polymer coating is also demonstrated.
