ABSTRACT

In patients with recurrent colorectal cancer, the development of fistulae presents a difficult therapeutic problem. The traditional surgical approach of resection and intestinal diversion may not always be appropriate in those with disseminated or terminal disease. We present the successful use of a covered esophageal stent to occlude an enterorectal rectal fistula in a patient with recurrent inoperable colonic carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate prospectively the usefulness of ultrasound in determining the site and cause of distal small bowel and colonic obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultrasound findings in 60 consecutive patients with suspected distal ileal or colonic obstruction were correlated with final surgical and radiological diagnoses. The diagnostic value of ultrasound was compared with plain abdominal radiography (AXR) for the presence and level of obstruction. RESULTS: Forty-five patients were confirmed to be obstructed. Ultrasound correctly identified obstruction in 44/45 and the cause in 36/45 (80%). Overall sensitivity of US for obstruction was 98% and specificity 80%, compared with 79% and 53% respectively for the AXR. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound is useful in determining the presence and cause of distal ileal and colonic obstruction.

ABSTRACT

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a rare disorder characterized by the deposition of haemosiderin in the leptomeninges, cranial nerves and spinal cord. The clinical features include sensorineural deafness, ataxia and pyramidal tract signs. We describe two cases demonstrating the characteristic findings on magnetic resonance imaging of widespread peripheral low signal on T2-weighted images.

ABSTRACT

It is rare for lymphoma to present as a primary muscle lesion. The computed tomography (CT) features are described in three cases. Muscle involvement was the only manifestation of lymphoma in two, and in all three cases, contrast enhancement of the soft tissue mass occurred.
