ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as well as worsening mental health problems and insomnia. These problems can persist for a long period, even after the pandemic. However, less is known about this topic. AIM: To analyze mental health, insomnia problems, and their influencing factors in HCWs after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted from June 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023, which was a half-year after the end of the COVID-19 emergency. Region-stratified population-based cluster sampling was applied at the provincial level for Chinese HCWs. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia were evaluated by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Insomnia Severity Index. Factors influencing the symptoms were identified by multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 2000 participants were invited, for a response rate of 70.6%. A total of 1412 HCWs [618 (43.8%) doctors, 583 (41.3%) nurses and 211 (14.9%) nonfrontline], 254 (18.0%), 231 (16.4%), and 289 (20.5%) had symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia, respectively; severe symptoms were found in 58 (4.1%), 49 (3.5%), and 111 (7.9%) of the participants. Nurses, female sex, and hospitalization for COVID-19 were risk factors for anxiety, depression, and insomnia symptoms; moreover, death from family or friends was a risk factor for insomnia symptoms. During the COVID-19 outbreak, most [1086 (76.9%)] of the participating HCWs received psychological interventions, while nearly all [994 (70.4%)] of them had received public psychological education. Only 102 (7.2%) of the HCWs received individual counseling from COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Although the mental health and sleep problems of HCWs were relieved after the COVID-19 pandemic, they still faced challenges and greater risks than did the general population. Identifying risk factors would help in providing targeted interventions. In addition, although a major proportion of HCWs have received public psychological education, individual interventions are still insufficient.

ABSTRACT

The discovery of novel and highly effective P-gp inhibitors is considered to be an effective strategy for overcoming tumor drug resistance. In this paper, a phenotypic screening via a self-constructed synthetic methodology-based library identified a new class of tricyclic spiroindole derivatives with excellent tumor multidrug resistance reversal activity. A stereospecific compound OY-103-B with the best reversal activity was obtained based on a detailed structure-activity relationship study, metabolic stability optimization and chiral resolution. For the VCR-resistant Eca109 cell line (Eca109/VCR), co-administration of 5.0 µM OY-103-B resulted in a reversal fold of up to 727.2, superior to the typical third-generation P-gp inhibitor tariquidar. Moreover, the compound inhibited the proliferation of Eca109/VCR cells in a concentration-dependent manner in plate cloning and flow cytometry. Furthermore, fluorescence substrate accumulation assay and chemotherapeutic drug reversal activity tests demonstrated that OY-103-B reversed tumor drug resistance via P-gp inhibition. In conclusion, this study provides a novel skeleton that inspires the design of new P-gp inhibitors, laying the foundation for the treatment of drug-resistant tumors.

ABSTRACT

Establishing quantitative parameters for differentiating between healthy and diseased cartilage tissues by examining collagen fibril degradation patterns facilitates the understanding of tissue characteristics during disease progression. These findings could also complement existing clinical methods used to diagnose cartilage-related diseases. In this study, cartilage samples from normal, osteoarthritis (OA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) tissues were prepared and analyzed using polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (P-SHG) imaging and quantitative image texture analysis. The enhanced molecular contrast obtained from this approach is expected to aid in distinguishing between healthy and diseased cartilage tissues. P-SHG image analysis revealed distinct parameters in the cartilage samples, reflecting variations in collagen fibril arrangement and organization across different pathological states. Normal tissues exhibited distinct χ33/χ31 values compared with those of OA and RA, indicating collagen type transition and cartilage erosion with chondrocyte swelling, respectively. Compared with those of normal tissues, OA samples demonstrated a higher degree of linear polarization, suggesting increased tissue birefringence due to the deposition of type-I collagen in the extracellular matrix. The distribution of the planar orientation of collagen fibrils revealed a more directional orientation in the OA samples, associated with increased type-I collagen, while the RA samples exhibited a heterogeneous molecular orientation. This study revealed that the imaging technique, the quantitative analysis of the images, and the derived parameters presented in this study could be used as a reference for disease diagnostics, providing a clear understanding of collagen fibril degradation in cartilage.

ABSTRACT

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes porcine pleuropneumonia (PCP), which is clinically characterized by acute hemorrhagic, necrotizing pneumonia, and chronic fibrinous pneumonia. Although many measures have been taken to prevent the disease, prevention and control of the disease are becoming increasingly difficult due to the abundance of APP sera, weak vaccine cross-protection, and increasing antibiotic resistance in APP. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel drugs against APP infection to prevent the spread of APP. Naringin (NAR) has been reported to have an excellent therapeutic effect on pulmonary diseases, but its therapeutic effect on lung injury caused by APP is not apparent. Our research has shown that NAR was able to alleviate APP-induced weight loss and quantity of food taken and reduce the number of WBCs and NEs in peripheral blood in mice; pathological tissue sections showed that NAR was able to prevent and control APP-induced pathological lung injury effectively; based on the establishment of an in vivo/in vitro model of APP inflammation, it was found that NAR was able to play an anti-inflammatory role through inhibiting the MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway and exerting anti-inflammatory effects; additionally, NAR activating the Nrf2 signalling pathway, increasing the secretion of antioxidant enzymes Nqo1, CAT, and SOD1, inhibiting the secretion of oxidative damage factors NOS2 and COX2, and enhancing the antioxidant stress ability, thus playing an antioxidant role. In summary, NAR can relieve severe lung injury caused by APP by reducing excessive inflammatory response and improving antioxidant capacity.

ABSTRACT

This study's principal mathematical deduction exploits the importance of the specification of long-term equilibrium level in the mean-reversion short-term interest rate model-such as the CKLS (Chan, Karolyi, Longstaff, and Sanders) model-to describe the dynamic characteristics of future short-term interest rate expectations, especially long-horizon expectations. Therefore, we present a preferred model by introducing a stochastic long-run equilibrium level factor to extend the specifications of the Vasicek model's short-term interest rate dynamics. Using this new type of short-term interest rate as a driver we develop a two-factor affine arbitrage-free model of term structure, the generalized Vasicek mode. The empirical results show that the model not only has a good sample fitting ability to the Chinese government bond yield curve, but also has better performance in capturing the dynamic characteristics of short-term interest rates and short-term interest rate expectations. This study provides not only a promising avenue for future research on improving interest rate modeling techniques and their practical applications in the financial industry but also a new literature base for accurately identifying public expectations and explaining the underlying mechanisms of expectation changes.

ABSTRACT

Stochastic and deterministic processes are the major themes governing microbial community assembly; however, their roles in bioreactors are poorly understood. Herein, the mechanisms underlying microbial assembly and the effect of rare taxa were studied in biofilters. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed differences in microbial communities at various stages. Null model analysis showed that stochastic processes shaped the community assembly, and deterministic processes emerged only in the inoculated activated sludge after domestication. This finding indicates the dominant role of stochastic factors (biofilm formation, accumulation, and aging). The Sloan neutral model corroborated the advantages of stochastic processes and mainly attributed these advantages to rare taxa. Cooccurrence networks revealed the importance of rare taxa, which accounted for more than 85% of the keystones. Overall, these results provide good foundations for understanding community assembly, especially the role of rare taxa, and offer theoretical support for future community design and reactor regulation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Icariin (ICA), a natural flavonoid compound monomer, has multiple pharmacological activities. However, its effect on bone defect in the context of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has not yet been examined. AIM: To explore the role and potential mechanism of ICA on bone defect in the context of T1DM. METHODS: The effects of ICA on osteogenesis and angiogenesis were evaluated by alkaline phosphatase staining, alizarin red S staining, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. Angiogenesis-related assays were conducted to investigate the relationship between osteogenesis and angiogenesis. A bone defect model was established in T1DM rats. The model rats were then treated with ICA or placebo and micron-scale computed tomography, histomorphometry, histology, and sequential fluorescent labeling were used to evaluate the effect of ICA on bone formation in the defect area. RESULTS: ICA promoted bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. The ICA treated-BMSCs showed higher expression levels of osteogenesis-related markers (alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin) and angiogenesis-related markers (vascular endothelial growth factor A and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1) compared to the untreated group. ICA was also found to induce osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling of BMSCs. In the bone defect model T1DM rats, ICA facilitated bone formation and CD31hiEMCNhi type H-positive capillary formation. Lastly, ICA effectively accelerated the rate of bone formation in the defect area. CONCLUSION: ICA was able to accelerate bone regeneration in a T1DM rat model by inducing osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling of BMSCs.

The formation of metallo-cages is affected by a variety of factors such as the ligands, metals, and anions, among which the impact of metals with different binding capacities is particularly important, but has rarely been studied in three-dimensional metallo-cages. Herein, we report the design of truxene-centered terpyridine ligands and the self-assembly of a series of tetrameric metallo-cages. The utilization of metal ions with strong (Zn2+, Fe2+) or weak (Cd2+) binding strength afforded 3D metallo-cages with low symmetry or highly symmetric metallo-tetrahedra, respectively, possessing totally different geometrical configurations. In addition, their photophysical properties and host-guest chemical properties were investigated.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a common complication in surgical patients. While many interventions to prevent PND have been studied, the availability of treatment methods is limited. Thus, it is crucial to delve into the mechanisms of PND, pinpoint therapeutic targets, and develop effective treatment approaches. In this study, reduced dorsal tenia tecta (DTT) neuronal activity was found to be associated with tibial fracture surgery-induced PND, indicating that a neuronal excitation-inhibition (E-I) imbalance could contribute to PND. Optogenetics in the DTT brain region was conducted using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with the ability to convert 808 nm near-infrared light to visible wavelengths, which triggered the activation of excitatory neurons with minimal damage in the DTT brain region, thus improving cognitive impairment symptoms in the PND model. Moreover, this noninvasive intervention to modulate E-I imbalance showed a positive influence on mouse behavior in the Morris water maze test, which demonstrates that UCNP-mediated optogenetics is a promising tool for the treatment of neurological imbalance disorders.

ABSTRACT

Biofilms are widely used and play important roles in biological processes. Low temperature of wastewater inhibits the development of biofilms derived from wastewater activated sludge. However, the specific mechanism of temperature on biofilm development is still unclear. This study explored the mechanism of temperature on biofilm development and found a feasible method to enhance biofilm development at low temperature. The amount of biofilm development decreased by approximately 66 % and 55 % at 4 °C and 15 °C, respectively, as compared to 28 °C. The cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) concentration also decreased at low temperature and was positively correlated with extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, formation, and adhesion strength. Microbial community results showed that low temperature inhibited the normal survival of most microorganisms, but promoted the growth of some psychrophile bacteria like Sporosarcina, Caldilineaceae, Gemmataceae, Anaerolineaceae and Acidobacteriota. Further analysis of functional genes demonstrated that the abundance of functional genes related to the synthesis of c-di-GMP (K18968, K18967 and K13590) decreased at low temperature. Subsequently, the addition of exogenous spermidine increased the level of intracellular c-di-GMP and alleviated the inhibition effect of low temperature on biofilm development. Therefore, the possible mechanism of low temperature on biofilm development could be the inhibition of the microorganism activity and reduction of the communication level between cells, which is the closely related to the EPS content, formation, and adhesion strength. The enhancement of c-di-GMP level through the exogenous addition of spermidine provides an alternative strategy to enhance biofilm development at low temperatures. The results of this study enhance the understanding of the influence of temperature on biofilm development and provide possible strategies for enhancing biofilm development at low temperatures.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Indentifying predictive factors for postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has great significance for patient prognosis. AIM: To explore the value of gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with clinical features in predicting early recurrence of HCC after resection. METHODS: A total of 161 patients with pathologically confirmed HCC were enrolled. The patients were divided into early recurrence and non-early recurrence group based on the follow-up results. The clinical, laboratory, pathological results and Gd-EOB-DTPA enhanced MRI imaging features were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 161 patients, 73 had early recurrence and 88 were had non-early recurrence. Univariate analysis showed that patient age, gender, serum alpha-fetoprotein level, the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage, China liver cancer (CNLC) stage, microvascular invasion (MVI), pathological satellite focus, tumor size, tumor number, tumor boundary, tumor capsule, intratumoral necrosis, portal vein tumor thrombus, large vessel invasion, nonperipheral washout, peritumoral enhancement, hepatobiliary phase (HBP)/tumor signal intensity (SI)/peritumoral SI, HBP peritumoral low signal and peritumoral delay enhancement were significantly associated with early recurrence of HCC after operation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that patient age, MVI, CNLC stage, tumor boundary and large vessel invasion were independent predictive factors. External data validation indicated that the area under the curve of the combined predictors was 0.861, suggesting that multivariate logistic regression was a reasonable predictive model for early recurrence of HCC. CONCLUSION: Gd-EOB-DTPA enhanced MRI combined with clinical features would help predicting the early recurrence of HCC after operation.

ABSTRACT

Cancer cells exhibit heightened secretory states that drive tumor progression. Here, we identify a chromosome 3q amplicon that serves as a platform for secretory regulation in cancer. The 3q amplicon encodes multiple Golgi-resident proteins, including the scaffold Golgi integral membrane protein 4 (GOLIM4) and the ion channel ATPase Secretory Pathway Ca2+ Transporting 1 (ATP2C1). We show that GOLIM4 recruits ATP2C1 and Golgi phosphoprotein 3 (GOLPH3) to coordinate calcium-dependent cargo loading and Golgi membrane bending and vesicle scission. GOLIM4 depletion disrupts the protein complex, resulting in a secretory blockade that inhibits the progression of 3q-amplified malignancies. In addition to its role as a scaffold, GOLIM4 maintains intracellular manganese (Mn) homeostasis by binding excess Mn in the Golgi lumen, which initiates the routing of Mn-bound GOLIM4 to lysosomes for degradation. We show that Mn treatment inhibits the progression of multiple types of 3q-amplified malignancies by degrading GOLIM4, resulting in a secretory blockade that interrupts pro-survival autocrine loops and attenuates pro-metastatic processes in the tumor microenvironment. Potentially underlying the selective activity of Mn against 3q-amplified malignancies, ATP2C1 co-amplification increases Mn influx into the Golgi lumen, resulting in a more rapid degradation of GOLIM4. These findings show that functional cooperativity between co-amplified genes underlies heightened secretion and a targetable secretory addiction in 3q-amplified malignancies.

Recent advancements in neuroimaging have illustrated that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries could impact the central nervous system (CNS), causing neuroplastic changes in the brain beyond the traditionally understood biomechanical consequences. While most of previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have focused on localized cortical activity changes post-injury, emerging research has suggested disruptions in functional connectivity across the brain. However, these prior investigations, albeit pioneering, have been constrained by two limitations: a reliance on small-sample participant cohorts, often limited to two to three patients, potentially limiting the generalizability of findings, and an adherence to region of interest based analysis, which may overlook broader network interactions. To address these limitations, our study employed resting-state fMRI to assess whole-brain functional connectivity in 15 ACL-injured patients, comparing them to matched controls using two distinct network analysis methods. Using Network-Based Statistics, we identified widespread reductions in connectivity that spanned across multiple brain regions. Further modular connectivity analysis showed significant decreases in inter-modular connectivity between the sensorimotor and cerebellar modules, and intra-modular connectivity within the default-mode network in ACL-injured patients. Our results thus highlight a shift from localized disruptions to network-wide dysfunctions, suggesting that ACL injuries induce widespread CNS changes. This enhanced understanding has the potential to stimulate the development of strategies aiming to restore functional connectivity and improve recovery outcomes.

Background: Fatty acid oxidation (FAO) is considered to play a vital part in tumor metabolic reprogramming. But the comprehensive description of FAO dysregulation in tumors has not been unknown. Methods: We obtained FAO genes, RNA-seq data and clinical information from the Msigdb, TCGA and GTEx databases. We assessed their prognosis value using univariate cox analysis, survival analysis and Kaplan-Meier curve. We determined the function of FAO genes using gene set variation analysis. The correlation analysis was calculated by corrplot R package. Immunotherapy response was assessed through TIDE scores. The protein expression levels of FAO genes were validated using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: The FAO scores were highest in COAD but lowest in PCPG. FAO scores were significantly associated with the prognosis of some cancers in OS, DSS, DFI and PFI. Besides, gene set variation analysis identified that FAO scores were related to immune-related pathways, and immune infiltration analysis showed FAO scores were positively related to cancer-associated fibroblasts and various immune-related genes. TIDE scores were significantly decreased in ACC, CHOL, ESCA, GBM, LAML, SARC, SKCM and THCA compared with normal samples, while it was significantly increased in BLCA, LUAD, LUSC, PCPG, PRAD and STAD. Besides, most FAO genes were downregulated in pan-cancer compared with normal samples. Moreover, we found copy number variation (CNV) of FAO genes played a positive role in their mRNA expression, while methylation was negative. We determined FAO genes were closely related to some drugs in pan-cancer. Conclusions: FAO score is a novel and promising factor for predicting outcomes.

Aims: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone malignancy among children and adolescents. We investigated whether benzamil, an amiloride analogue and sodium-calcium exchange blocker, may exhibit therapeutic potential for osteosarcoma in vitro. Methods: MG63 and U2OS cells were treated with benzamil for 24 hours. Cell viability was evaluated with the MTS/PMS assay, colony formation assay, and flow cytometry (forward/side scatter). Chromosome condensation, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) assay, cleavage of poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and caspase-7, and FITC annexin V/PI double staining were monitored as indicators of apoptosis. Intracellular calcium was detected by flow cytometry with Fluo-4 AM. The phosphorylation and activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) were measured by western blot. The expression levels of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-xL), SOD1, and SOD2 were also assessed by western blot. Mitochondrial status was assessed with tetramethylrhodamine, ethyl ester (TMRE), and intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was measured with BioTracker ATP-Red Live Cell Dye. Total cellular integrin levels were evaluated by western blot, and the expression of cell surface integrins was assessed using fluorescent-labelled antibodies and flow cytometry. Results: Benzamil suppressed growth of osteosarcoma cells by inducing apoptosis. Benzamil reduced the expression of cell surface integrins α5, αV, and ß1 in MG63 cells, while it only reduced the expression of αV in U2OS cells. Benzamil suppressed the phosphorylation and activation of FAK and STAT3. In addition, mitochondrial function and ATP production were compromised by benzamil. The levels of anti-apoptotic proteins XIAP, Bcl-2, and Bcl-xL were reduced by benzamil. Correspondingly, benzamil potentiated cisplatin- and methotrexate-induced apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells. Conclusion: Benzamil exerts anti-osteosarcoma activity by inducing apoptosis. In terms of mechanism, benzamil appears to inhibit integrin/FAK/STAT3 signalling, which triggers mitochondrial dysfunction and ATP depletion.

BACKGROUND: Iodine nutrition is critical for fetal neurodevelopment in the first trimester of pregnancy, a period associated with dramatic changes in thyroid function. The aim of this study was to evaluate iodine nutritional status and thyroid function reference ranges in the first trimester in Taiwan. METHODS: Pregnant women aged 20 years and above in the first trimester were recruited in Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan from March 2019 to July 2022. Each participant provided a spot urine sample for measurement of urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and a blood sample for check-up of thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies. A simple food frequency questionnaire was also completed. RESULTS: A total of 209 women with a mean age of 32.9 ± 4.4 years were enrolled. The median UIC was 160.9 µg/L [interquartile range (IQR): 105.0-246.2 µg/L], indicating overall iodine sufficiency. The gestational thyroid function reference ranges were: TSH [median: 0.93 (0.007-2.9) µIU/mL], free T4 [1.3 (0.93-2.2) ng/dL], free T3 [3.0 (2.3-5.0) ng/dL], total T4 [9.9 (6.4-16.9) ng/dL] and total T3 [135 (88-231) ng/dL]. If the non-pregnant reference range of serum TSH was used, eight women (4.8%) would be misclassified as having subclinical hyperthyroidism, and two women (1.2%) with subclinical hypothyroidism would be missed. In multivariate analysis, nulliparous [adjusted odds ratio (OR) from model 1-3: 2.02, 2.05, 2.02; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08-3.77, 1.10-3.81, 1.11-3.66; p = 0.027, 0.023, 0.022, respectively] and multivitamin non-users (adjusted OR from model 1-3: 1.86, 1.85, 1.78; 95% CI: 1.04-3.34, 1.03-3.32, 1.004-3.71; p = 0.038, 0.039, 0.049, respectively) had increased odds of having lower UIC levels <150 µg/L. CONCLUSION: The iodine nutritional status in the first trimester is adequate in Taiwan; however, certain subgroups such as nulliparous and multivitamin non-users are still at risk for iodine deficiency. Gestational thyroid function reference ranges are needed for correct diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

Biting midges, notably those within the Ceratopogonidae family, have long been recognized for their epidemiological significance, both as nuisances and vectors for disease transmission in vertebrates. Despite their impact, genomic insights into these insects, particularly beyond the Culicoides genus, remain limited. In this study, we assembled the Forcipomyia taiwana (Shiraki) genome, comprising 113 scaffolds covering 130.4 Mbps-with the longest scaffold reaching 7.6 Mbps and an N50 value of 2.6 Mbps-marking a pivotal advancement in understanding the genetic architecture of ceratopogonid biting midges. Phylogenomic analyses reveal a shared ancestry between F. taiwana and Culicoides sonorensis Wirth & Jones, dating back approximately 124 million years, and highlight a dynamic history of gene family expansions and contractions within the Ceratopogonidae family. Notably, a substantial expansion of the odorant receptor (OR) gene family was observed, which is crucial for the chemosensory capabilities that govern biting midges' interactions with their environment, including host seeking and oviposition behaviors. The distribution of OR genes across the F. taiwana genome displays notable clusters on scaffolds, indicating localized tandem gene duplication events. Additionally, several collinear regions were identified, hinting at segmental duplications, inversions, and translocations, contributing to the olfactory system's evolutionary complexity. Among the 156 ORs identified in F. taiwana, 134 are biting midge-specific ORs, distributed across three distinct clades, each exhibiting unique motif features that distinguish them from the others. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis, we correlated distinct gene modules with sex and reproductive status, laying the groundwork for future investigations into the interplay between gene expression and adaptive behaviors in F. taiwana. In conclusion, our study not only highlights the unique olfactory repertoire of ceratopogonid biting midges but also sets the stage for future studies into the genetic underpinnings of their unique biological traits and ecological strategies.

ABSTRACT

To improve the retention and slow-release abilities of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), an 82 %-purity struvite fertilizer (MAP-BC) was synthesized using magnesium-modified biochar and a solution with a 2:1 concentration ratio of NH4+ to PO43- at a pH of 8. Batch microscopic characterizations and soil column leaching experiments were conducted to study the retention and slow-release mechanisms and desorption kinetics of MAP-BC. The slow-release mechanism revealed that the dissolution rate of high-purity struvite was the dominant factor of NP slow release. The re-adsorption of NH4+ and PO43- by biochar and unconsumed MgO prolonged slow release. Mg2+ ionized by MgO could react with PO43- released from struvite to form Mg3(PO4)2. The internal biochar exhibited electrostatic attraction and pore restriction towards NH4+, while magnesium modification and nutrient loading formed a physical antioxidant barrier that ensured long-term release. The water diffusion experiment showed a higher cumulative release rate for PO43- compared to NH4+, whereas in soil column leaching, the trend was reversed, suggesting that soil's competitive adsorption facilitated the desorption of NH4+ from MAP-BC. During soil leaching, cumulative release rates of NH4+ and PO43- from chemical fertilizers were 3.55-3.62 times faster than those from MAP-BC. The dynamic test data for NH4+ and PO43- in MAP-BC fitted the Ritger-Peppas model best, predicting release periods of 163 days and 166 days, respectively. The leaching performances showed that MAP-BC reduced leaching solution volume by 5.58 % and significantly increased soil large aggregates content larger than 0.25 mm by 24.25 %. The soil nutrients retention and pH regulation by MAP-BC reduced leaching concentrations of NP. Furthermore, MAP-BC significantly enhanced plant growth, and it is more suitable as a NP source for long-term crops. Therefore, MAP-BC is expected to function as a long-term and slow-release fertilizer with the potential to minimize NP nutrient loss and replace part of quick-acting fertilizer.

ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the root cause of mental illness stigma is necessary to adopt effective management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To establish a stable and effective text-picture integration rating scale to predict public perspectives on mental illness and to examine its reliability and validity. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional study using internet survey data. SETTING: Online. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred volunteers. RESULTS: The 10-item the Text-Picture Integration Scale for Perspectives on Mental Illness was developed. The authors conducted data analysis using SPSS to evaluate the reliability and criterion-related validity of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS). The Text-Picture Integration Scale's item-level content validity index ranged from 0.83 to 1.00, and the scale-level content validity index was 0.97. The scale demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach's α = .80). The mean value of individual items ranged from 3.18 to 4.48, and the mean total score was 39.44 (SD = 8.47). The Text-Picture Integration Scale exhibited satisfactory criterion-related validity with the MHLS (r = .76, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Preliminary analyses support that the Text-Picture Integration Scale is a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness and is appropriate for evaluating destigmatization efforts. Plain-Language Summary: The study findings support the use of the Text-Picture Integration Scale as a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness. The scale is also appropriate for evaluating ways to address the stigmas that people associate with mental illness, which pose challenges for people in recovery. Occupational therapists can leverage their understanding of public perspectives on mental illness when choosing interventions to support the overall well-being of their clients with mental illness.

ABSTRACT

A multiple sub-pupil ultra-spectral imaging system designed with a single spectrometer and detector can simultaneously detect multiple-channel spectra with ultra-high spectral resolution. However, due to using a prism in the system's front end, the nonlinear dispersion introduces spectral line tilt in the imaging spectra. This phenomenon can lead to bias in the final spectral data. To eliminate this issue, we propose a new design by introducing a second prism to correct this spectral tilt in the system. The angle of spectral line tilt generated by the nonlinear dispersion of the first prism is derived. It provides the theoretical basis for characterizing the second complementary prism. Finally, a UV multiple sub-pupil ultra-spectral imaging system is designed. The system employs two pupil separation prisms and one flat panel array to segment the pupil in three channels, each operating within spectral ranges of 180∼210 nm, 275∼305 nm, and 370∼400 nm, respectively. The spectral resolutions in all three channels are better than 0.1 nm. The corrected spectral line tilt is less than 1/3 of a pixel in the two channels with pupil separation prisms. At a Nyquist frequency of 30 lp/mm, the modulation transfer functions of all three channels are greater than 0.7, ensuring imaging quality. The design results indicate that the method proposed in this paper, utilizing complementary prisms, can effectively correct the spectral line tilt caused by the nonlinear dispersion of the pupil separation prisms. This design approach can be a reference for developing multiple sub-pupil ultra-spectral imaging systems.
