ABSTRACT

The need to develop green and cost-effective industrial catalytic processes has led to growing interest in preparing more robust, efficient, and selective heterogeneous catalysts at a large scale. In this regard, microwave-assisted synthesis is a fast method for fabricating heterogeneous catalysts (including metal oxides, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and supported metal nanoparticles) with enhanced catalytic properties, enabling synthesis scale-up. Herein, the synthesis of nanosized UiO-66-NH2 was optimized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to obtain defective matrices essential for the stabilization of metal nanoparticles, promoting catalytically active sites for hydrogenation reactions (760 kg·m-3·day-1 space time yield, STY). Then, this protocol was scaled up in a multimodal microwave reactor, reaching 86% yield (ca. 1 g, 1450 kg·m-3·day-1 STY) in only 30 min. Afterward, Pd nanoparticles were formed in situ decorating the nanoMOF by an effective and fast microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, resulting in the formation of Pd@UiO-66-NH2 composites. Both the localization and oxidation states of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in the MOF were achieved using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The optimal composite, loaded with 1.7 wt % Pd, exhibited an extraordinary catalytic activity (>95% yield, 100% selectivity) under mild conditions (1 bar H2, 25 °C, 1 h reaction time), not only in the selective hydrogenation of a variety of single alkenes (1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-tridecene, cyclohexene, and tetraphenyl ethylene) but also in the conversion of a complex mixture of alkenes (i.e., 1-hexene, 1-tridecene, and anethole). The results showed a powerful interaction and synergy between the active phase (Pd NPs) and the catalytic porous scaffold (UiO-66-NH2), which are essential for the selectivity and recyclability.

ABSTRACT

Focal dark spots (DS) in farmed Atlantic salmon fillets contain a significant number of B cells as revealed by the high abundance of immunoglobulin (Ig) transcripts in transcriptome data. The immune response in DS remains unknown while they represent a major problem in commercial aquaculture. Here, we characterized the diversity and clonal composition of B cells in DS. Sixteen gene markers of immune cells and antigen presentation were analyzed with RT-qPCR. All genes expression showed a positive correlation with DS area and intensity. The flatter the DS, the higher the expression of cd28, csfr, ctla, igt, and sigm, the lower expression of cd83 and btla, and the larger the cumulative frequency within DS. The expression of most of the analyzed immune genes, including three Ig types and markers of B cells was lower in DS than in the lymphatic organs, head kidney and spleen, but significantly higher compared to skeletal muscle. High levels of ctla4 and cd28 in DS might indicate the recruitment of T cells. Sequencing of IgM repertoire (Ig-seq) assessed migration of B cells by co-occurrence of identical CDR3 sequences in different tissues. The combination of gene expression and Ig-seq revealed the presence of several stages of B cell differentiation in DS. B cells at the earliest stage, with high ratio of membrane to secretory IgM (migm and sigm), showed minor Ig repertoire overlap with other tissues. Further differentiation stage (increased sigm to migm ratio and high expression of pax5 and cd79) was associated with active movement of B cells from DS towards lymphatic organs and visceral fat. Traffic and expression of immune genes decreased at later stages. These B cells could be involved in a response directed against viruses, pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria in DS. Seven of eight fish were positive for salmon alphavirus, and levels were higher in DS than in unstained muscle. PCR with universal primers to the 16S rRNA gene did not detect bacteria in DS. Although the evolution of DS most likely implies local exposure to antigens, neither this nor previous studies have found a necessary association between DS and pathogens or self-antigens.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To provide clinical recommendations based on evidence for the the prevention and management of HDP in EsSalud. Methods: A CPG for the the prevention and management of HDP in EsSalud was developed. To this end, a guideline development group (local GDG) was established, including medical specialists and methodologists. The local GDG formulated 8 clinical questions to be answered by this CPG. Systematic searches of systematic reviews and­when it was considered pertinent­primary studies were searched in PubMed y Central during 2021. The evidence to answer each of the posed clinical questions was selected. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. In periodic work meetings, the local GDG used the GRADE methodology to review the evidence and formulate the recommendations, the points of good clinical practice and flowcharts for the prevention, management and follow-up. Finally, the CPG was approved with Resolution 112-IETSI-ESSALUD-2021. Results: This CPG addressed 8 clinical questions, divided into three topics: prevention, management and follow-up of the HDP. Based on these questions, 11 recommendations (6 strong recommendations and 5 weak recommendations), 32 points of good clinical practice, and 3 flowcharts were formulated. Conclusions: The main recommendations in the guideline are the use of magnesium sulfate for the treatment of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. The guideline must be updated in three years' time.


Objetivos: proveer recomendaciones clínicas basadas en evidencia para la prevención y el manejo de la enfermedad hipertensiva del embarazo EHE en EsSalud. Materiales y métodos: se conformó un grupo elaborador de la guía (GEG) que incluyó médicos especialistas y metodólogos. El GEG formuló ocho preguntas clínicas para ser respondidas por la presente Guía de Práctica Clínica (GPC). Se realizaron búsquedas sistemáticas de revisiones sistemáticas y, cuando se consideró pertinente, estudios primarios en PubMed y Central durante 2021. Se seleccionó la evidencia para responder cada una de las preguntas clínicas planteadas. La certeza de la evidencia fue evaluada usando la metodología. En reuniones de trabajo periódicas, el GEG usó la metodología Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) para calificar la evidencia y formular las recomendaciones. Además se resentan los puntos de buenas prácticas clínicas (BPC) y los flujogramas de prevención, manejo y seguimiento. Finalmente, la GPC fue aprobada por Resolución 112-IETSI-ESSALUD-2021. Resultados: en la presente GPC se formularon 11 recomendaciones (6 fuertes y 5 condicionales) que respondieron las preguntas clínicas definidas en el alcance de la GPC, acompañadas de 32 BPC y 3 flujogramas que abordan temas de prevención tratamiento y seguimiento de la EHE Conclusiones: como recomendaciones centrales de la guía se dan el uso de sulfato de magnesio para el tratamiento de la preeclampsia severa y la eclampsia. La guía deberá ser actualizada en tres años.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: Los tumores del hígado representan de 1-2 por ciento de todas las neoplasias malignas de la infancia y de 15-20 por ciento de los tumores abdominales. Objetivo: Caracterizar desde el punto de vista clínico-quirúrgico a pacientes pediátricos con diagnóstico de tumor hepático. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo y transversal realizado en el hospital pediátrico Juan Manuel Márquez. Se revisaron historias clínicas, informes histopatológicos e informes operatorios en el periodo comprendido entre el 1ro. de enero de 1997 al 31 de diciembre de 2017, para obtener los datos clínicos necesarios para la investigación. La muestra quedó conformada por 63 pacientes. Se emplearon frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes para variables cualitativas. Para las variables cuantitativas, se emplearon además medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión. Resultados: Se constató que 33 (52,4 por ciento) pacientes fueron del sexo masculino. El mayor número de enfermos se concentró en el grupo de 1 a 5 años con 36 (57,1 por ciento). El tumor más frecuente fue el hepatoblastoma y dentro de este el hepatoblastoma fetal, del cual se registraron 16 pacientes (25,4 por ciento). En 34 pacientes (54 por ciento) se combinó el tratamiento médico y el quirúrgico. Conclusiones: Predominan los pacientes masculinos, entre 1 y 5 años de edad. Se identifican principalmente tumores hepáticos epiteliales, malignos en estadio III y la variedad histológica de hepatoblastoma fetal. El tratamiento más utilizado es el médico-quirúrgico según protocolo del hospital dependiente del tipo histológico(AU)


Introduction: Liver tumors represent 1-2 percent of all the malignant neoplasms in children and the 15-20 percent of abdominal tumors. Objective: To characterize from the clinical surgical perspective the pediatric patients with a diagnosis of hepatic tumor. Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted in Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital. There were reviewed clinical records, histopathological reports and surgical reports from January 1st, 1997 to December 31st, 2017, to obtain necessary clinical data for the research. The sample was formed by 63 patients. There were used absolute frequencies and percentages for qualitative variables. For quantitative variables, there were used central trend and diffusion measures. Results: It was verified that 33 patients (52.4 percent) were males. The biggest number of patients was in the age group from 1 to 5 years being 36 (57.1 percent). The most frequent tumor was the hepatoblastoma and within this category the fetal hepatoblastoma, with 16 (25.4 percent) patients with that condition. In 34 patients (54 percent) were combined medical and surgical approchaes. Conclusions: There was a predominance of male patients in the ages from 1 to 5 years. There were mainly identified patients with epitelial hepatic tumors, malignant tumors in stage III and the histopatological variation of fetal hepatoblastoma. The most common treatment was the medical-surgical one according to the hospital´s protocols and depending on the histologic type(AU)

There is an urgent need to find alternative feed resources that can further substitute fishmeal in Atlantic salmon diets without compromising health and food quality, in particular during the finishing feeding period when the feed demand is highest and flesh quality effects are most significant. This study investigates efficacy of substituting a isoprotein (35 %) and isolipid (35 %) low fishmeal diet (FM, 15 %) with Antarctic krill meal (KM, 12 %) during 3 months with growing finishing 2·3 kg salmon (quadruplicate sea cages/diet). Final body weight (3·9 (se 0·04) kg) was similar in the dietary groups, but the KM group had more voluminous body shape, leaner hearts and improved fillet integrity, firmness and colour. Ectopic epithelial cells and focal Ca deposits in intestine were only detected in the FM group. Transcriptome profiling by microarray of livers showed dietary effects on several immune genes, and a panel of structural genes were up-regulated in the KM group, including cadherin and connexin. Up-regulation of genes encoding myosin heavy chain proteins was the main finding in skeletal muscle. Morphology examination by scanning electron microscopy and secondary structure by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy revealed more ordered and stable collagen architecture of the KM group. NEFA composition of skeletal muscle indicated altered metabolism of n-3, n-6 and SFA of the KM group. The results demonstrated that improved health and meat quality in Atlantic salmon fed krill meal were associated with up-regulation of immune genes, proteins defining muscle properties and genes involved in cell contacts and adhesion, altered fatty acid metabolism and fat deposition, and improved gut health and collagen structure.

ABSTRACT

Anemia, the most common hematological abnormality in the world, is a reduction in concentration of erythrocytes or hemoglobin in blood. The most frequent cause of anemia in pregnancy is nutritional-derived iron deficiency, and in the puerperium, acute blood loss. Iron requirements increase during pregnancy, and failure to maintain iron levels may lead to serious and adverse consequences for both the mother and the developing fetus and newborn. From a global perspective, anemia during pregnancy is more frequent and severe in countries with poor social and economic development. Consensus recommendations define anemia as hemoglobin level (Hb) <10.5 g / dL during pregnancy and <10 g / dL during the postpartum period, cut-off values to initiate therapy with oral iron, intravenous iron or red blood cell transfusion. This paper attempts to compile recommendations for a safe and effective treatment in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with nutritional-derived iron deficiency in pregnant women and / or acute blood loss in the postpartum.


La anemia, la anormalidad hematológica más común en el mundo, es una reducción en la concentración de eritrocitos o hemoglobina en la sangre. La principal causa de anemia en el embarazo es la deficiencia de hierro de causa nutricional (ADHN), mientras que en el puerperio es la pérdida aguda de sangre (PAS). Los requerimientos de hierro aumentan durante el embarazo, y el hecho de no mantener niveles suficientes de hierro puede tener consecuencias adversas y graves tanto para la madre como para el feto en desarrollo y el recién nacido. Desde una perspectiva mundial, la anemia durante el embarazo es más frecuente y severa en países con pobre desarrollo social y económico. Las recomendaciones de consenso definen la anemia como un nivel de hemoglobina (Hb) <10,5 g / dL durante el embarazo y <10 g / dL durante el período posparto como líneas de corte para iniciar la terapia con hierro oral, hierro intravenoso o transfusión de glóbulos rojos. En el presente artículo se intenta recopilar las recomendaciones para un tratamiento seguro y efectivo, de manera de reducir la morbilidad y mortalidad asociadas con la ADHN en la gestación y/o la PAS en el posparto.

El presente artículo resume la guía de práctica clínica (GPC) para la prevención y manejo del parto pretérmino en el Seguro Social del Perú (EsSalud). Para el desarrollo de esta GPC, se conformó un grupo elaborador de la guía (GEG) que incluyó especialistas clínicos y metodólogos, el cual formuló 11 preguntas clínicas. Para responder cada pregunta se realizó búsquedas sistemáticas en Pubmed y en repositorios de GPC, y se seleccionó la evidencia pertinente. La certeza de la evidencia fue evaluada usando la metodología Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). En reuniones periódicas, el GEG usó la metodología GRADE para revisar la evidencia y emitir las recomendaciones. Se emitieron 20 recomendaciones (13 fuertes y 7 condicionales), 24 puntos de buena práctica clínica, una recomendación de implementación y un flujograma.


This paper features a summary of the Peruvian Social Security (EsSalud) Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for prevention and management of preterm birth. A specialized group was formed for writing this CPG, which included clinical and methodology specialists, who formulated 11 clinical questions. Systematic searches in PubMed and CPG repositories were performed aiming to answer the questions, and relevant evidence was selected. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. In regular work meetings, the specialized group used the GRADE approach for reviewing the evidence and for developing recommendations. At the end, this CPG formulated twenty recommendations (13 strong and 7 conditional), 24 good clinical practice points, one recommendation for implementation, and a flowchart.

ABSTRACT

Los leiomiosarcomas uterinos son tumores malignos poco frecuentes que generalmente se presentan con síntomas inespecíficos, por lo que su diagnóstico suele ser incidental. Los casos más frecuentes se presentan en mujeres posmenopáusicas a quienes se les interviene quirúrgicamente por leiomiomas. La asociación de los leiomiosarcomas uterinos con la gestación es rara; solo existen doce casos reportados hasta la actualidad. Se presenta un caso de leiomiosarcoma uterino en una paciente gestante a quien se le realizó histerectomía por atonía uterina.


Uterine leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant tumors that usually present with nonspecific symptoms. The diagnosis is usually incidental; especially in postmenopausal women who are surgically intervened by uterine leiomyomas. Its association with pregnancy is rare, and there are only twelve cases reported to date. We present a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma in a pregnant patient who underwent hysterectomy due to uterine atony.

Following a preliminary study to determine the possibility of using a grapevine shoot extract (VIN) as a sustainable alternative to sulfur dioxide (SO2), in this study, the chromatic features, phenolic composition, and sensory analysis of wines treated with VIN at two concentrations were studied during storage in bottle for the first time. The highest differences were found in phenolic compounds after 12months of storage in bottle. The VIN wines had a low content of free anthocyanins and were high in vinyl-pyranoanthocyanins, and B-type vitisins. Consequently, they showed better chromatic characteristics. Moreover VIN, especially at high dose, preserved non-anthocyanin phenolic compounds better than SO2. However, at this high dose some organoleptic properties were affected. VIN, when used at a low dose, is able to preserve wine composition without loss of quality.

The fact that it is possible to induce stilbenoid synthesis in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) by UV-C light allows the possibility of stimulating grapevine phytoalexin production to increase disease resistance and immunity, and subsequently to limit the use of pesticides in vineyards. UV-C light was applied daily during three days before the harvesting of table grape variety Crimson seedless to study the accumulation of stilbenoid compounds during ripeness. The E-resveratrol concentration was monitored during daily preharvest UV-C light application and compared with that after a single application. Daily periodic preharvest UV-C light treatment showed a cumulative effect on grape stilbenoids. An 86-fold stilbenoid level increase (sum of E-resveratrol, E-piceatannol, ε-viniferin, E-piceid, isorhapontigenin, ω-viniferin, and Z-piceid) in grapes was achieved. The effects of UV-C light on stilbenoid in grape cane was also addressed for the first time. Stilbenoid oligomers such as hopeaphenol, ampelopsin A, and r-viniferin were quantified in cane samples. Quality grape parameters indicated an acceleration of ripening in UV-C samples.

ABSTRACT

This paper reports the use of a grapevine-shoot stilbene extract (Vineatrol®) as a preservative in red wine. Its effectiveness to preserve red wine quality under two different winemaking systems (traditional and Ganimede) was studied at bottling and after twelve months of storage in bottle. Enological parameters, color related parameters, volatile composition, sensory analysis and olfactometric profile were evaluated. At bottling wines treated with Vineatrol showed higher color related parameters and higher score in sensory analysis than those treated with SO2. The use of SO2 increased ester and alcohol volatile compounds in relation to the use of Vineatrol. Wine olfactometric profile was modified by Vineatrol addition. Two new odorant zones with high modified frequency appeared in wines treated with Vineatrol. After 12months of storage in bottle, wines treated with Vineatrol showed parameters related to oxidation. The weak point of the process seemed to be the evolution during the storage in bottle.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery for rectal TME achieves better patient recovery, lower morbidity, and shorter hospital stay than open surgery. However, in laparoscopic rectal surgery, the overall conversion rate is nearly 20%. Transanal TME combined with laparoscopy, known as Hybrid NOTES, is a less invasive procedure that provides adequate solutions to some of the limitations of rectal laparoscopy. Transanal TME via TEO with technical variants (intracorporeal resection and anastomosis, TEO review of the anastomosis) attempts to standardize and simplify the procedure. METHOD: Prospective observational study was used describe and assess the technique in terms of conversion to open surgery, overall morbidity, surgical site infection and hospital stay. The sample comprised consecutive patients diagnosed with rectal tumor less than 10 cm from the anal verge who were candidates for low anterior resection using TME (except T4). Demographic, surgical, postoperative, and pathological variables were analyzed, as well as morbidity rates. RESULTS: From September 2012 to August 2014, 32 patients were included. The conversion rate was 0%. Overall morbidity was 31.3%, SSI rate was 9.4%, and mean hospital stay was 8 days. Oncological radical criteria were achieved with pathological parameters of 94% of complete TME and a median circumferential margin of 13 mm. CONCLUSION: The introduction of technical variants of TEO for transanal resection can facilitate a procedure that requires extensive experience in transanal and laparoscopic surgery. Studies of sphincter function, quality of life, and long-term oncological outcome are now necessary.

ABSTRACT

Altimeter sea surface height (SSH) fields are analyzed to define and discuss the seasonal circulation over the wide continental shelf in the SW Atlantic Ocean (27°-43°S) during 2001-2012. Seasonal variability is low south of the Rio de la Plata (RdlP), where winds and currents remain equatorward for most of the year. Winds and currents in the central and northern parts of our domain are also equatorward during autumn and winter but reverse to become poleward during spring and summer. Transports of shelf water to the deep ocean are strongest during summer offshore and to the southeast of the RdlP. Details of the flow are discussed using mean monthly seasonal cycles of winds, heights, and currents, along with analyses of Empirical Orthogonal Functions. Principle Estimator Patterns bring out the patterns of wind forcing and ocean response. The largest part of the seasonal variability in SSH signals is due to changes in the wind forcing (described above) and changes in the strong boundary currents that flow along the eastern boundary of the shelf. The rest of the variability contains a smaller component due to heating and expansion of the water column, concentrated in the southern part of the region next to the coast. Our results compare well to previous studies using in situ data and to results from realistic numerical models of the regional circulation.

UNLABELLED: Stilbene-enriched wine is considered to be an interesting new food product with added value due to its potential health-promoting properties. Stilbene concentration in grape is highly variable and rather scarce. However, it can be increased by stress treatments. For this reason, numerous pre- and postharvest grape treatments, and some combinations of them, have been tested to maximize stilbene content in grapes. In the present manuscript, Syrah grapes were treated with (i) methyl jasmonate (MEJA), (ii) ultraviolet light (UVC), and (iii) methyl jasmonate and ultraviolet light (MEJA-UVC) and compared with untreated grapes. Afterward, winemaking was developed. Wine achieved by combination of both treatments (MEJA-UVC) contained significantly higher stilbene concentration (trans-resveratrol and piceatannol) than its respective control (2.5-fold). Wine quality was improved in color-related parameters (color intensity, L*, a*, b*, ΔE*, anthocyanins, and tannin). Moreover, MEJA-UVC wines obtained the highest score in sensorial analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that pre- and postharvest treatments are combined to increase stilbenes in wine. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The effect of treatment combination (methyl jasmonate and UVC light) on grape and wine was evaluated. Our results highlight the positive effect of the treatments in stilbene content, color parameters, and sensorial analysis. Moreover, added-value by-products were achieved.

ABSTRACT

Nanostructured porous silicon (PSi) elicits as a very attractive material for future biosensing systems due to its high surface area, biocompatibility and well-established fabrication methods. In order to engineer its performance as a biosensor transducer platform, the density of immunoglobulins properly immobilized and oriented onto the surface needs to be optimized. In this work we fabricated and characterized a novel biosensing system focusing on the improvement of the biofunctionalization cascade. The system consists on a chemically oxidized PSi platform derivatized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) that is coupled to Staphylococcus protein A (SpA). The chemical oxidation has previously demonstrated to enhance the biofunctionalization process and here "by implementing SpA" a molecularly oriented immunosensor is achieved. The biosensor system is characterized in terms of its chemical composition, wettability and optical reflectance. Finally, this system is successfully exploited to develop a biosensor for detecting asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous molecule involved in cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this work is relevant from the point of view of design and optimization of the biomolecular immobilization cascade on PSi surfaces with the added value of contribution to the development of new assays for detecting ADMA with a view on prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

Satellite-derived sea surface salinity (SSS) data from Aquarius and SMOS are used to study the shelf-open ocean exchanges in the western South Atlantic near 35°S. Away from the tropics, these exchanges cause the largest SSS variability throughout the South Atlantic. The data reveal a well-defined seasonal pattern of SSS during the analyzed period and of the location of the export of low-salinity shelf waters. In spring and summer, low-salinity waters over the shelf expand offshore and are transferred to the open ocean primarily southeast of the river mouth (from 36°S to 37°30'S). In contrast, in fall and winter, low-salinity waters extend along a coastal plume and the export path to the open ocean distributes along the offshore edge of the plume. The strong seasonal SSS pattern is modulated by the seasonality of the along-shelf component of the wind stress over the shelf. However, the combined analysis of SSS, satellite-derived sea surface elevation and surface velocity data suggest that the precise location of the export of shelf waters depends on offshore circulation patterns, such as the location of the Brazil Malvinas Confluence and mesoscale eddies and meanders of the Brazil Current. The satellite data indicate that in summer, mixtures of low-salinity shelf waters are swiftly driven toward the ocean interior along the axis of the Brazil/Malvinas Confluence. In winter, episodic wind reversals force the low-salinity coastal plume offshore where they mix with tropical waters within the Brazil Current and create a warmer variety of low-salinity waters in the open ocean. ABSTRACT

A high-resolution model is used to characterize the dominant patterns of sea surface salinity (SSS) variability generated by the freshwater discharges of the Rio de la Plata (RdlP) and the Patos/Mirim Lagoon in the southwestern Atlantic region. We identify three dominant modes of SSS variability. The first two, which have been discussed in previous studies, represent the seasonal and the interannual variations of the freshwater plumes over the continental shelf. The third mode of SSS variability, which has not been discussed hitherto, represents the salinity exchanges between the shelf and the deep ocean. A diagnostic study using floats and passive tracers identifies the pathways taken by the freshwater plumes. During the austral winter (JJA), the plumes leave the shelf region north of the BMC. During the austral summer (DJF), the plumes are entrained more directly into the BMC. A sensitivity study indicates that the high-frequency component of the wind stress forcing controls the vertical structure of the plumes while the low-frequency component of the wind stress forcing and the interannual variations of the RdlP discharge controls the horizontal structure of the plumes. Dynamical analysis reveals that the cross-shelf flow has a dominant barotropic structure and, therefore, the SSS anomalies detected by Aquarius represent net mass exchanges between the shelf and the deep ocean. The net cross-shelf volume flux is 1.21 Sv. This outflow is largely compensated by an inflow from the Patagonian shelf.

The application of animal-derived proteins as wine fining agents has been subject to increased regulation in recent years. As an alternative to protein-based fining agents, insoluble plant-derived fibers have the capacity to adsorb red wine tannins. Changes in red wine tannin were analyzed following application of fibers derived from apple and grape and protein-based fining agents. Other changes in wine composition, namely, color, monomeric phenolics, metals, and turbidity, were also determined. Wine tannin was maximally reduced by application of an apple pomace fiber and a grape pomace fiber (G4), removing 42 and 38%, respectively. Potassium caseinate maximally removed 19% of wine tannin, although applied at a lower dose. Fibers reduced anthocyanins, total phenolics, and wine color density, but changes in wine hue were minor. Proteins and apple fiber selectively removed high molecular mass phenolics, whereas grape fibers removed those of both high and low molecular mass. The results show that insoluble fibers may be considered as alternative fining agents for red wines.

ABSTRACT

Stilbenes are a family of bioactive compounds found in plants. However, only a few stilbenes are present in the human diet. Grape and wine are the main dietary source of stilbenes, resveratrol and piceid being the most common ones. Ultraviolet C light (UVC) postharvest treatment was used to obtain significantly increased stilbene concentration in grapes. A new, previously undescribed-in-grapes stilbene was found after UVC treatment. The process followed to isolate and identify this unknown stilbene is described in the present work. This isolation involved several fractionation steps including counter current chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC due to its low concentration and the presence of structurally related compounds. The structure of the compound was unequivocally identified by NMR spectroscopy analyses including (1)H-NMR; COSY; ROESY; HSQC and HMBC. The compound was identified as isorhapontigenin (ISOR), a stilbene found in traditional Asian medicinal plants. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of its occurrence in grapes.
