ABSTRACT

As the projected incidence and mortality of cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) rises to epidemic proportions, it is imperative that more is done to identify the genomic differences and commonalities between patients of African and European ancestry to fulfil the promise of precision oncology. Here, we summarize the utility of precision oncology approaches, with a focus on comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) and consolidate examples of national and international consortia that are driving the field forward. We describe the importance of genomic diversity and its relevance in cancer, and propose recommendations, success factors and desired outcomes for precision oncology consortia to adopt in SSA. Through this, we hope to catalyze the initiation of such projects and to contribute to improving cancer patient outcomes in the region.

ABSTRACT

Unpredictable dewatering performance is a barrier to the effective management and treatment of faecal sludge. While mechanisms of dewatering in sludges from wastewater treatment are well understood, it is not clear how dewatering of faecal sludge fits into the framework of existing knowledge. We evaluate physical-chemical parameters, including EPS and cations, and demographic (source), environmental (microbial community), and technical factors (residence time) as possible predictors of dewatering performance in faecal sludge, and make comparisons to the existing conceptual model for wastewater sludge. Faecal sludge from public toilets took longer to dewater than sludge from other sources, and had turbid supernatant after settling. Slow dewatering and turbid supernatant corresponded to high EPS and monovalent cation concentrations, conductivity, and pH, but cake solids after dewatering was not correlated with EPS or other factors. Faecal sludges with higher EPS appeared less stabilised than those with lower EPS, potentially a result of inhibition of biological degradation due to high urine concentrations. However, distinct microbial community compositions were also observed in samples with higher and lower EPS concentrations. Higher EPS faecal sludge was comparable in dewatering behaviour and EPS content to anaerobically digested and primary wastewater sludges. However lower EPS faecal sludges had different dewatering behaviour than wastewater sludges and may be governed by different mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

We report two cases of Pityriasis versicolor (PV) in infants aged 12 and 18 months. The latter were brought to medical attention because of hypochromic and achromic, round macules involving the limbs and the face. Physical examination of their mothers showed voluntary depigmentation for cosmetic purposes due to the use of corticosteroids and hydroquinone, on average, over a 5-year period. The scotch tape test performed in one of the infants and his mother showed short filaments and clusters of spores. Treatment was based on ketoconazole. After 8 weeks, all patients reported favorable outcomes despite the persistence of some hypochomic macules. The peculiarities of this study are, on the one hand the topography of the lower limbs and on the other hand a positive family history of PV whose occurrence is favored by the use of depigmenting agents based on corticosteroids. Corticosteroids favor the atrophic and achromic feature of the lesions. Indeed, achromic lesions on the lower limbs were described in adults undergoing artificial depigmentation.

ABSTRACT

The supplementation program of the community nutrition project (PNC) launched by the Senegalese Government in order to protect the most vulnerable groups (children and women) was evaluated. Using a stable isotope (deuterium), we assessed the effect of the PNC on breastmilk output, mother's body composition, and baby's growth at three months of lactation. Breastmilk triglycerides, lactose, protein, and zinc were also determined. Mothers who were supplemented more than 60 days during pregnancy showed a significant increase in fat-free mass as compared to those who were supplemented for less than 30 days (p = .03). Breastmilk output was not influenced by the supplementation, but breastmilk lactose, total protein, and zinc contents increased significantly (p < .01) in the supplemented mothers. Growth of the babies of the supplemented mothers was better than that of those whose mothers were not supplemented. It was concluded that the food supplementation had beneficial effects on both mothers' and babies' nutritional status depending on the onset of the supplementation.
