ABSTRACT

A non-conventional modification of exfoliated few-layer graphene (FLG) with different arynes under microwave (MW) irradiation and solvent-free conditions is reported. The described approach allows reaching fast, efficient and mild covalent functionalization of FLG.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of a [60]fullerene-benzyne building block and its further chemical cycloaddition reaction with graphene has resulted in a new all-carbon hybrid material which has been characterized by TGA, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies, XPS as well as AFM and TEM. Based on computational studies, the formation of both [2+2] and [4+2] cycloadducts on the graphene surface is feasible.

ABSTRACT

Babesia microti-like piroplasms are a recently recognized cause of illness in dogs in northwest Spain. Our objective was to describe the clinical characteristics and investigate the risk factors for azotemia and death among 58 B microti-like infected dogs. Twenty-one of the 58 (36%) dogs were azotemic at the time that the infection was diagnosed. The case fatality rate during the following week was 22%. Dogs with azotemia at the time of diagnosis were 10 times (95% CI, 3.26-28.8) more likely to die during the following week. Azotemia was the main cause of death for B microti-like infected dogs (attributable fraction = 90%). Severe anemia was present in 45 of the 58 (78%) dogs. Azotemic dogs also presented with hyperphosphatemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia, proteinuria, and high urine protein: creatinine ratios, suggesting a glomerular component to the disease. Age was the only factor significantly associated with the risk of azotemia (P = .042): on average, a 4-year age increase doubled the risk of an infected dog being azotemic. The only factor significantly associated with mortality was azotemia (P = .001). We concluded that B microti-like infection is associated with a high risk of azotemia and mortality.

ABSTRACT

[reaction--see text] A series of fluorous derivatives of tert-butyl alcohol were prepared and evaluated as reagents for the protection of carboxylic acids for use in fluorous synthesis. Alcohol 3b can be employed efficiently to protect and immobilize medium-size nonpolar carboxylic acids in a fluorous phase.

ABSTRACT

Benzyne (1a) and the substituted derivatives 4,5-difluorobenzyne (1b) and 3-methoxybenzyne (2) undergo chemoselective palladium-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2]-cocyclotrimerization with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) to afford the corresponding phenanthrenes and/or naphthalenes. The major products are phenanthrenes if Pd(PPh(3))(4) is used as the catalyst, naphthalenes if Pd(2)(dba)(3) is used. When the method is applied to polycyclic arynes 3-6, which are generated from the corresponding o-trimethylsilylaryl triflates, the same reactivity pattern is observed: the reaction can be selectively directed either toward the cocyclization of one molecule of aryne and two molecules of alkyne or to the reaction of two molecules of aryne with one molecule of alkyne, by appropriate choice of the palladium catalyst. The synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds 33-39 using this methodology is reported.

ABSTRACT

The hitherto unisolated, thermodynamically unstable C(2)-symmetric conformer of hexabenzotriphenylene (1) has been efficiently synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of 9, 10-didehydrophenanthrene (4). The barriers to conformational interconversion of 1 are examined experimentally and by computational studies.
