ABSTRACT
Entering the age of retirement means a threshold situation affecting various relations in the living-conditions, medical provision not excluded. Based upon the WHO-authorizised concept of classification of impairments, disabilities and handicaps (ICIDH), disability status was checked up in 62 male and 113 female at the age of 65 respectively 60 years, the trial forming the respondents rate out of a population total of 179 persons reaching the age of retirement within a one year's space at a district town in the north part of GDR. Medical provision in this context was analysed.

The increase of older and oldest people explain the growing accident-frequency in household and traffic. From this it follows the priority of craniocerebral trauma. Pathological and normal aging beyond the seventy years show anomalies in symptomatology and clinical course as against young people. This research paper represent important aspects of epidemiology, anamnesis, clinic and examination-algorithm after craniocerebral trauma by senile patients.

Besides the advances of physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, operative technique affect above all a well balanced nursing in the unit of care, mobilization and prophylaxis positive on the prognosis after surgical operations in the higher age. The demographic development clearly demonstrate the increasing of geriatric surgery in the following years. These pieces of work represent relevant aspects of the surgical care by elderly people; the medical practice and education must take into consideration in these aspects.

The objective of intervention is to produce an improved state of physical, psychological, and sociological well-being. To reach this state a complex therapeutic program is required that offers the best of pharmacotherapy, nutrition, occupational and activity therapies, and the advice of specialists during the course of therapy. Consultations with the patients' family-doctors are also important. The practice of geriatrics will be improved when we include its special considerations in our school curriculum .

This report includes empirical findings of a questionnaire based survey in which several aspects of health status of older proposer for relocation to old-age institutions (N = 1281) in district of Schwerin were examined. In addition this contribution represents a perspective of social gerontological discussion on concepts of health and illness. Some implications of this perspective for further research and practice are described in short statements at the end of the contribution.

Corresponding publications above all consider social medical problems of the diabetic, which still is in occupation. As more than the half of all diabetics are recipients of pension, we have to engage in them, too. We examined 1397 diabetics. 72% of them were able to get alone in the consulting hour. The rest (28%) had a significantly longer duration of illness and were disabled workers very often. We refer to the insufficient insulin therapy in old diabetics. We demonstrate possibilities for enforcement of the insulin injection.

In order to improve the health and well-being of the elderly, it is necessary to develop and assess care programs for the elderly within existing health and social services. An epidemiological approach in assessing the functional health and autonomy are described using the concepts of disability and handicap (according ICIDH). A design for estimating need and for identifying high-risk groups in a population survey are presented.

In the GDR, the definition of hyperuricaemia is based on sex different reference spheres, independent of age. Our examinations (1872 diabetics and other persons) and the study of literature showed, that it would be better to define the hyperuricaemia only in fertile women different from men.

Basic principles on employment at the age of retirement having been explained beforehand the results of interviews with 700 employers concerning motivation and conditions in relevance are recorded. The employment rate in the age-group under consideration is discussed as dependent on the historical level of the society, the conclusions aiming at goals to be fulfilled in enterprises as well as in the society as a whole.
