ABSTRACT

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the correlation between the blood urea nitrogen (BUN)-to-creatinine (BUN/Cr) ratio and adverse outcomes (AOs) at 3 months in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in the Korean population. Methods: This cohort study encompassed 1906 cases of AIS at a South Korean hospital from January 2010 to December 2016. To determine the linear correlation between the BUN/Cr ratio and AOs in AIS, a binary logistic regression model (BLRM) was employed. Additionally, generalized additive models and techniques for smooth curve fitting were utilized to reveal the nonlinear dynamics between the BUN/Cr ratio and AOs in patients with AIS. Results: The prevalence of AOs was 28.65%, with a median BUN/Cr ratio of 18.96. Following adjustments for covariates, the BLRM disclosed that the association between the BUN/Cr ratio and the risk of AOs in patients with AIS did not attain statistical significance. Nevertheless, a nonlinear relationship surfaced, pinpointing an inflection point at 21.591. To the left of this inflection point, a 31.42% reduction in the risk of AOs was noted for every 1-unit surge in the Z score of the BUN/Cr ratio [odds ratio (OR) = 0.686, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.519, 0.906, p = 0.008]. On the right side of the inflection point, the effect size (OR = 1.405, 95% CI: 1.018, 1.902, p = 0.039) was determined. Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the intricate nature of the relationship between the BUN/Cr ratio and 3-month outcomes in patients with AIS, establishing a robust groundwork for future investigations.

ABSTRACT

Background: Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular occlusive disease, which is characterized by stenosis and gradual occlusion of the internal carotid arteries, causing the progression of characteristic collateral vessels. To date, most studies investigating moyamoya disease have focused on medical implications, and the potential implications for neurocognitive and/or neuropsychiatric functioning were inconclusive. Case Presentation: we present a case of a 26-year-old Chinese postpartum woman who presented to the emergency department with a 19-h history of cognitive decline, vomiting, and convulsions. Blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate were 200/120 mmHg, 115 beats/minute, and 30 breaths/minute, respectively, on arrival. The Glasgow Coma Scale, modified RANKIN scale (mRS), and National Institute of Health stroke scale (NIHSS) scores were 3, 5, and 18, respectively. Moyamoya disease was diagnosed using cerebral angiography and digital subtraction angiography. The cognitive functions of orientation, use of language, ability to calculate, and memory significantly improved after 11 days of treatment (Glasgow Coma Scale: 15; mRS: 0; NIHSS: 0). Conclusions:This patient was diagnosed with reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome related to moyamoya disease. This case highlights that atypical posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome can occur in patients with moyamoya disease, and should be considered for the differential diagnosis of cerebral infarcts and hemorrhage in a postpartum female.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to explore the risk factors of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) for different ethnic groups in Changde city (a multi-ethnic residence inhabited mainly by Han and Tujia), Hunan Province, China. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A multicenter study was performed and the demography data, etiology data and clinical features of 5338 AIS patients from 17 hospitals in Changde city were collected from January 2011 through December 2011. MAIN MEASURES: Student's t-test and Chi2-test were used to compare the differences between the Han and Tujia ethnic group in the AIS. RESULTS: In Changde, the incidence of AIS in the Tujia ethnic group was higher than that in the Han ethnic group (233.14 per million vs. 84.38 million, respectively). We found statistically significant differences between the Tujia and Han ethnicities in demographic, etiology and clinical data (eg, sex, living environment, diet, smoking, payment methods, cerebral hemorrhage and transient ischemic attack [P < .05]). In addition, compared with the Han population, the Tujia patients had a higher rate of the incidence of the anterior circulation infarction, partial anterior circulation infarction, lacunar infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that lifestyle choices (eg, diet, smoking cigarettes), location, family heritage, and sex are associated with AIS and is useful for informing AIS rates and treatment for AIS.

ABSTRACT

Environmental friendly materials, K6SiW11O39Sn (SiWSn), was synthesized. SiWSn photocatalytic decomposition of C. I. Reactive Red 24 (RR24) with the UV-lamp (253.7 nm, 20 W), Xenon lamp filtered less than 390 nm light (500 W) and sun light was investigated. The results showed that RR24 solution could be effectively decolorized with the SiWSn photocatalyst. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RR24 with SiWSn was affected by the initial concentration of RR2 solution, the amount of SiWSn and the photolysis time. It is demonstrated that the process of photodegradation of RR24 with SiWSn is a pesudo first-order reaction, which can be described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation. Hydroxyl radicals and holes are both the main oxidants in the photocatalytic reaction of RR24 with SiWSn.

ABSTRACT

The fluorescence spectral behavior of interaction of phenylfluorone(PF)-Mo(VI) and protein was investigated in Triton X-100 microemulsion medium at pH 2.0. A novel method for the determination of protein using phenylfluorone (PF)-Mo(VI) as a fluorescence spectrum probe was developed. Excitation and emission wavelengths are 465 and 525 nm, respectively. The effective factors and the optimum conditions have been studied, and the reducing value of fluorescence intensity is in proportion to the concentration of proteins in the range 0-6.00 microg x L(-1) for bovine serum albumin, 0-4.00 microg x L(-1) for human serum albumin, 0-5.00 microg x L(-1) for ovalbumin, and 0-4.00 microg x L(-1) for lysozyme. The Triton X-100 microemulsion was efficiently used to enhance the sensibility and stability of the system, and the limits of detection are 5.4, 5.2, 1.5 and 8.2 ng x L(-1), respectively. Most of foreign substances do not interfere with the determination, and this method has good selectivity and high sensitivity. It has been applied to the determination of proteins in the urine samples with satisfactory results.
