ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study compared the prevalences of metabolic syndrome and of cardiac or kidney comorbidities among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with metabolic dysfunction-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD), chronic infection with hepatitis B or C virus (HBV or HCV), or the combination of MAFLD and chronic HBV infection. METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively analyzed for patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy between March 2013 and March 2023. Patients with HCC of different etiologies were compared in terms of their clinicodemographic characteristics and laboratory data before surgery. RESULTS: Of the 2422 patients, 1,822 (75.2%) were chronically infected with HBV without MAFLD and HCV, 415 (17.2%) had concurrent MAFLD and chronic HBV infection but no HCV infection, 121 (5.0%) had MAFLD without hepatitis virus infection, and 64 (2.6%) were chronically infected with HCV in the presence or absence of MAFLD and HBV infection. Compared to patients chronically infected with HBV without MAFLD and HCV, those with MAFLD but no hepatitis virus infection showed significantly lower prevalence of cirrhosis, ascites, portal hypertension, alpha-fetoprotein concentration ≥ 400 ng/mL, tumor size > 5 cm, multinodular tumors and microvascular invasion. Conversely, they showed significantly higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, abdominal obesity, history of cardiovascular disease, T-wave alterations, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperuricemia, as well as higher risk of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Compared to patients with MAFLD but no hepatitis virus infection, those with concurrent MAFLD and chronic infection with HBV showed significantly higher prevalence of cirrhosis, ascites and portal hypertension, but significantly lower prevalence of hypertension and history of cardiovascular disease. Compared to patients with other etiologies, those chronically infected with HCV in the presence or absence of MAFLD and HBV infection, showed significantly higher prevalence of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, ascites, and esophagogastric varices. CONCLUSION: Patients with HCC associated with MAFLD tend to have a background of less severe liver disease than those with HCC of other etiologies, but they may be more likely to suffer metabolic syndrome or comorbidities affecting the heart or kidneys.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the expression of SWI/SNF-related,matrix-associated,actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily A,member 4(SMARCA4)/Brahma-related gene 1,V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B(BRAF),P53,programmed cell death protein-1(PD-1),and programmed death-ligand 1(PD-L1),and changes in the expression of BRAF and neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase(NTRK) in the patients with colorectal cancer in Tibet, thereby providing a basis for targeted therapy and immunotherapy for this disease in Tibet. Methods A total of 64 patients with colorectal cancer resected in the Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital from January 2015 to July 2021 were enrolled in this study. The expression of SMARCA4,BRAF,P53,PD-1,and PD-L1 was detected by immunohistochemical staining. The gene fusion involving NTRK1,NTRK2,and NTRK3 was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization, and the BRAF V600E gene mutation by polymerase chain reaction. Results The 64 patients with colorectal cancer were at a male-to-female ratio of 1.21∶1,with the mean age of (56.59±13.27) years. The tumors were located in the colon in 46(71.88%) patients and in the rectum in 18(28.12%) patients.Sixty(93.75%) patients presented adenocarcinoma, and 4(6.25%) patients presented other types of tumors. The patients in T1/T2 and T3/T4 phases accounted for 17.19%(n=11) and 82.81%(n=53),respectively.Lymph node metastasis occurred in 24(37.50%) patients. The immunohistochemical staining results showed partially down-regulated or absent expression of SMARCA4 in 1(1.56%) patient, positive BRAF expression in 4(6.25%) patients, and mutant expression of P53 in 35(54.69%) patients. The PD-1-expressing tumor associated immune cell was proportion score<10% in 45(70.31%) patients and≥10% in 19(29.69%) patients. The PD-L1 combined positive score was<10 in 52(81.25%) patients and≥10 in 12(18.75%) patients. The gene fusion of NTRK1,NTRK2,and NTRK3 was negative in all the patients, and BRAF V600E gene mutation was positive in 4(6.25%) patients. The SMARCA4 gene alteration was not detected in the patient with partial expression missing of SMARCA4.The PD-L1 combine positive score was correlated with the deficient mismatch repair(dMMR)/microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) and the PD-1 expression (χ2=10.223,P=0.001;χ2=11.979,P=0.001). Conclusions The down-regulated or absent SMARCA4 expression and NTRK gene fusion are rare in the patients with colorectal cancer in Tibet.A few patients present BRAF V600E gene mutations, and Pan-TRK and BRAF expression can be used for the primary screening of NTRK gene fusion and BRAF gene mutation. The patients with dMMR/MSI-H are prone to high expression of PD-L1 and expected to benefit from immunotherapy. No significant correlation exists between P53 mutation and PD-L1 expression. The high expression of PD-1 is positively correlated with the high expression of PD-L1.

ABSTRACT

Objective Downregulation of miR-17-5p has been reported in several cancers, but whether and how miR-17-5p is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unknown. Here, we examined whether miR-17-5p is downregulated in HCC and whether that affects expression of its target gene encoding transforming growth factor β receptor 2 (TGFβR). Methods We screened for potential microRNAs (miRNAs) involved in HCC by analyzing published transcriptomes from HCC patients. Expression of miR-17-5p was measured in HCC cell lines and in tissues from HCC patients using quantitative real-time PCR. The in vitro effects of miR-17-5p on HCC cells were assessed by EdU proliferation assay, CCK-8 cell proliferation assay, colony-formation assay, transwell migration/invasion assay, wound healing assay, and flow cytometry. Effects of miR-17-5p were evaluated in vivo using mice with subcutaneous tumors. Effects of the miRNA on the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) were assessed, while its effects on TGFβR2 expression were analyzed using bioinformatics and a dual luciferase reporter assay. Results Patients with low miR-17-5p expression showed lower rates of overall and recurrence-free survival than patients with high miR-17-5p expression, and multivariate Cox regression identified low miR-17-5p expression as an independent predictor of poor overall survival in HCC patients. In vitro, miR-17-5p significantly inhibited HCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and the EMT, while promoting apoptosis. In vivo, it slowed the development of tumors. These protective effects of miR-17-5p were associated with downregulation of TGFβR2. Conclusion The miRNA miR-17-5p can negatively regulate the expression of TGFβR2 and inhibit the EMT, thereby slowing tumor growth in HCC, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach against HCC (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the pathological types, expression of mismatch repair protein, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2),and Pan-TRK,and Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)infection in patients with colorectal cancer resected in Tibet. Methods A total of 79 patients with colorectal cancer resected in Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital from December 2013 to July 2021 were enrolled in this study. The clinical and pathological data of the patients were collected. The expression of mismatch repair protein,HER2,and Pan-TRK was detected by immunohistochemical(IHC)staining, and detection of HER2 gene by fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH)in the patients with HER2 IHC results of 2+ or above.EBV was detected by in situ hybridization with EBV-encoded small RNA. Results A total of 79 colorectal cancer patients were included in this study, with the male-to-female ratio of 1.26:1 and the mean age of(57.06±12.74)years(24-83 years).Among them,4 patients received preoperative neoadjuvant therapy.Colonic cancer and rectal cancer occurred in 57(57/79,72.15%,including 31 and 26 in the right colon and left colon, respectively)and 22(22/79,27.85%)patients,respectively.The maximum diameter of tumor varied within the range of 1-20 cm,with the mean of(6.61±3.33)cm.Among the 79 colorectal cancer patients,75(75/79,94.94%)patients showed adenocarcinoma.Lymph node metastasis occurred in 12(12/21,57.14%)out of the 21 patients with severe tumor budding,13(13/23,56.52%)out of the 23 patients with moderate tumor budding, and 2(2/31,6.45%)out of the 31 patients with mild tumor budding, respectively. The lymph node metastasis rate showed differences between the patients with severe/moderate tumor budding and the patients with mild tumor budding(all P<0.001).The IHC staining showed that mismatch repair protein was negative in 10(10/65,15.38%)patients,including 5 patients with both MSH2 and MSH6 negative,4 patients with both MLH1 and PMS2 negative, and 1 patient with MSH6 negative.Pan-TRK was negative in 65 patients. The IHC results of HER2 showed 0 or 1+ in 60 patients and 2+ in 5 patients.FISH showed no positive signal in the 5 patients with HER2 IHC results of 2+.The detection with EBV-encoded small RNA showed positive result in 1(1/65,1.54%)patient. Conclusions Non-specific adenocarcinoma of the right colon is the most common in the patients with colorectal cancer resected in Tibet, and 15% of the patients showed mismatch repair protein defects.EBV-associated colorectal carcer is rare,Pan-TRK expression and HER2 gene amplification are seldom. The colorectal cancer patients with moderate and severe tumor budding are more likely to have lymph node metastasis.

ABSTRACT

The rising global prevalence of metabolic diseases has increased the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), leading to an increase in cases of NAFLD-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To provide an updated literature review detailing epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenic pathways, and treatment strategies linked to NAFLD-related HCC, we conducted a literature search on PubMed from its inception to December 31, 2021. About 25% of the global population suffers from NAFLD. The annual incidence of HCC among NAFLD patients is approximately 1.8 per 1,000 person-years. Older age, male sex, metabolic comorbidities, unhealthy lifestyle habits (such as smoking and alcohol consumption), physical inactivity, genetic susceptibility, liver fibrosis, and degree of cirrhosis in NAFLD patients are important risk factors for NAFLD-related HCC. Therefore, low-calorie diet, moderate-intensity exercise, treatment of metabolic comorbidities, and cessation of smoking and alcohol are the main measures to prevent NAFLD-related HCC. In addition, all patients with advanced NAFLD-related fibrosis or cirrhosis should be screened for HCC. Immune suppression disorders and changes in the liver microenvironment may be the main pathogenesis of NAFLD-related HCC. Hepatic resection, liver transplantation, ablation, transarterial chemoembolization, radiotherapy, targeted drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are used to treat NAFLD-related HCC. Lenvatinib treatment may lead to better overall survival, while immune checkpoint inhibitors may lead to worse overall survival. Given the specific risk factors for NAFLD-related HCC, primary prevention is key. Moreover, the same treatment may differ substantially in efficacy against NAFLD-related HCC than against HCC of other etiologies.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the clinicopathological features and immunohistochemical expression of meningiomas in the Tibetan population in Tibet, and improve the understanding of meningiomas. Methods The clinical and pathological data of all the meningiomas diagnosed by pathology in Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital from April 2013 to March 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. All the cases underwent immunohistochemical staining of trimethylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27me3),mucin 4 (MUC4),somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2),progesterone receptor, epithelial membrane antigen, glial fibrillary acidic protein,vimentin,S-100,P53,and Ki-67.The histopathological features and the staining results were observed under a light microscope. Results A total of 116 cases of meningiomas were included in this study, with the male-to-female ratio of 1.0∶2.6 and the age of 4-73 years. The main clinical symptom was headache. The imaging examination showed that 114 cases had single lesions and 2 cases had multiple lesions. The tumors were located in the cranium (108 cases) and spinal canal (8 cases). The maximum diameter of the tumors ranged from 0.3 cm to 10.0 cm,with a mean of (5.7±2.2) cm.In terms of microscopic grading and histological types, the 116 cases included 111 cases of WHO grade Ⅰ (including 53 cases of fibrous type,20 cases of meningothelial type,24 cases of transitional type,10 cases of psammomatous type,etc.),4 cases of WHO grade Ⅱ (3 cases of atypical type and 1 case of clear cell type),and 1 case of WHO grade Ⅲ (papillary type). The immunohistochemical staining showed H3K27me3 expression absent in 9 cases (9/116,7.8%),MUC4 positive in 64 cases (64/116,55.2%),SSTR2 positive in 101 cases (101/116,87.1%).Eighty cases had follow-up results, among which 71 cases had no recurrence, while 9 cases recurred. Conclusions Meningioma is the most common tumor in the central nervous system in the pathological file of Tibet. It mainly attacks the middle-aged female patients, occupying the parasagittal sinus, falx, and convex surface of the brain.Fibrous meningioma of WHO grade Ⅰ is common, while the meningiomas of WHO grades Ⅱ and Ⅲ are rare. The expression degree of MUC4 is higher in meningothelial and transitional meningiomas but lower in fibrous meningiomas. There may be no correlation between the absence of H3K27me3 expression and prognosis.

ABSTRACT

The closely related species Helicoverpa armigera (H. armigera) and Helicoverpa assulta (H. assulta) have different host plant ranges and share two principal components of sex pheromones but with reversed ratios. The antennae are the main olfactory organ of insects and play a crucial role in host plant selection and mate seeking. However, the genetic basis for gene expression divergence in the antennae of the two species is unclear. We performed an allele-specific expression (ASE) analysis in the antennal transcriptomes of the two species and their F1 hybrids, examining the connection between gene expression divergence and phenotypic differences. The results show that the proportion of genes classified as all cis was higher than that of all trans in males and reversed in females. The contribution of regulatory patterns to gene expression divergence in males was less than that in females, which explained the functional differentiation of male and female antennae. Among the five groups of F1 hybrids, the fertile males from the cross of H. armigera female and H. assulta male had the lowest proportion of misexpressed genes, and the inferred regulatory patterns were more accurate. By using this group of F1 hybrids, we discovered that cis-related regulations play a crucial role in gene expression divergence of sex pheromone perception-related proteins. These results are helpful for understanding how specific changes in the gene expression of olfactory-related genes can contribute to rapid evolutionary changes in important olfactory traits in closely related moths.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Lenvatinib is regarded as the first-line therapy for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study assessed the efficacy and safety of lenvatinib with or without immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in patients with unresectable HCC. METHODS: In this multicentric retrospective study, patients with unresectable HCC who treated with lenvatinib with or without ICIs would be enrolled. Overall survival, progression-free survival, objective response rate, and disease control rate were calculated to assess the antitumor response. RESULTS: Between January 2019 and August 2020, 65 patients received lenvatinib plus ICIs while other 45 patients received lenvatinib. The baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups. Lenvatinib plus ICIs provided significantly higher overall survival (hazard ratio = 0.47, 95% CI 0.26-0.85; p = 0.013) and progression-free survival (hazard ratio = 0.35, 95% CI 0.20-0.63; p < 0.001) than lenvatinib monotherapy. Moreover, patients with lenvatinib plus ICIs had significantly higher objective response rate (41.5% vs 20.0%, p = 0.023) and disease control rate (72.3% vs 46.7%, p = 0.009) per RECIST v1.1 than those with lenvatinib. No treatment-related deaths were observed. Grade 3 or greater adverse events occurring in 10% or more of patients in either treatment group were hypertension [13 (20.0%) of 65 patients treated with lenvatinib plus ICIs vs 8 (17.8%) of 45 patients treated with lenvatinib], and palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia [seven (10.8%) vs two (4.4%)]. CONCLUSIONS: In this real-world study, lenvatinib combined with ICIs showed significantly promising efficacy and manageable safety than lenvatinib alone in patients with unresectable HCC.

ABSTRACT

In the negative terrain habitat of the karst degraded tiankeng, the shady and sunny slopes are dramatically different, which results in substantial variations in plant communities. With the degraded tiankeng Shenxiantang in Zhanyi, Yunnan as an example, we explored the functional traits of Fagaceae plants in the shady and sunny slopes, which would help reveal the value of tiankeng as species diversity conservation pool. The results showed that soil nutrients in the shady slope were more than those in the sunny slope. Leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf dry weight of Faga-ceae plants in the shady slope were significantly larger than those in the sunny slope. Leaf thickness was significantly lower than that in the sunny slope. Dry matter content of leaves was less than that of the sunny slope. The main environmental factors affecting functional traits of Fagaceae plants in the shady slope were soil total potassium concentration and soil moisture, while soil total phosphorus concentration was the key factor in the sunny slope. The extent of variation of leaf functional traits in shady slope was less than that in the sunny slope. Fagaceae plants mainly adapted to the shady slope habitat by changing the leaf dry weight to increase photosynthetic rate and carbon accumulation abi-lity. Sunny slope obtained more resource by keeping smaller specific leaf area and increasing the extent of variation of the leaf area. The succession rate of plant community in the shady slope of the degraded tiankeng Shenxiantang was significantly faster than that in the sunny slope. The dominance of Fagaceae plants gradually decreased in the shady slope, but remained to be the constructive species in the sunny slope.

ABSTRACT

Helicoverpa armigera utilizes (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald) as its major sex pheromone component. Three pheromone binding proteins (PBPs) and two general odorant binding proteins (GOBPs) are abundantly expressed in the male antennae of H. armigera. However, their precise roles in the olfactory detection of Z11-16:Ald remain enigmatic. To answer this question, we first synthesized the antibody against HarmOR13, an olfactory receptor (OR) primarily responding to Z11-16:Ald and mapped the local associations between PBPs/GOBPs and HarmOR13. Immunostaining showed that HarmPBPs and HarmGOBPs were localized in the supporting cells of trichoid sensilla and basiconic sensilla respectively. In particular, HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 were colocalized in the cells surrounding the olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) expressing HarmOR13. Next, using two noninterfering binary expression tools, we heterologously expressed HarmPBP1, HarmPBP2 and HarmOR13 in Drosophila T1 sensilla to validate the functional interplay between PBPs and HarmOR13. We found that the addition of HarmPBP1 or HarmPBP2, not HarmPBP3, significantly increased HarmOR13's response to Z11-16:Ald. However, the presence of either HarmPBP1 or HarmPBP2 was ineffective to change the tuning breadth of HarmOR13 and modulate the response kinetics of this receptor. Taken together, this work demonstrates both HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 are involved in Z11-16:Ald detection. Our results support the idea that PBPs can contribute to the peripheral olfactory sensitivity but do little in modulating the selectivity and the response kinetics of corresponding ORs.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study aims to determine differences in severity of background liver disease at hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis and long-term survival outcomes among patients undergoing liver resection for HCC in the background of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) compared to chronic hepatitis B (CHB) alone or concurrent CHB (CHB/MAFLD). METHODS: Patient demographics and comorbidities, clinicopathologic data, perioperative and long-term outcomes among patients who underwent liver resection for HCC were reviewed. Overall and recurrence-free survival were calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method, with the values compared using the log-rank test. RESULTS: From January 2014 to December 2018, 1325 patients underwent potential curative liver resection of HCC; 67 (5.0%), 176 (13.3%), and 1082 (81.7%) patients had MAFLD alone, CHB concurrent with MAFLD, and CHB alone, respectively. At HCC diagnosis, fewer MAFLD patients had cirrhosis, alpha fetoprotein concentration ≥ 400 ng/mL, tumor size ≥ 5 cm, mulinodular, microvascular invasion, receiving major hepatectomy, and receiving adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization. After a median follow-up of 47 months after liver resection, MAFLD (or MAFLD plus CHB/MAFLD) patients had significantly higher overall and recurrence-free survival than CHB patients before or after propensity score analysis (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with HCC in the setting of MAFLD have less-severe background liver disease at HCC diagnosis and better long-term survival after curative liver resection compared to counterparts with CHB/MAFLD or CHB.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: and purpose: Massage has gained increasing attention for reducing peri-operative anxiety. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of massage for peri-operative anxiety in adults. METHODS: Six English electronic databases were comprehensively searched from their inception to February 2020. Subgroup analysis, quality assessment, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression and publication bias assessment were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-five controlled trials comprising 2494 participants were included. The meta-analysis indicated that massage could significantly reduce peri-operative anxiety for most types of surgical patients. Specifically, it was effective for pre-, intra- and post-operative anxiety. Acupoint or specific body reflex area massage showed a larger effect than general massage did. Massage delivered by professionals and non-professionals were both effective. Massage lasting 10-20 min per session was the most worthy of recommendation. Massage was concomitant with the improvement of peri-operative vital signs and post-operative pain. CONCLUSION: Massage is a promising complementary therapy for ameliorating peri-operative anxiety in adults.

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to explore the factors that influence breast cancer awareness. Materials & methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted between January and April 2019 in Changchun, Jilin Province, China. Results: A total of 274 women were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Participants had a moderate level of breast cancer awareness (median = 76.50 [68.75, 84.00]). Women in the action/maintenance stages reported higher breast cancer awareness (p = 0.044). Women's breast cancer awareness was positively associated with high health information literacy level, husbands' higher educational degrees, seeing doctors after detecting abnormal breast changes and living within a short distance from the nearest hospital. ABSTRACT

We investigated the characteristics of plant species diversity in tree and shurb layers and the main influencing factors in different slope positions of a shady slope of degraded tiankeng talus. The results showed that there were 21 species in 17 genera and 13 families in the tree layer, and 20 species in 20 genera and 14 families in shrub layer in the south side of the Shenxiantang. Plant communities were subtropical moist coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest. Micro-climate led to obvious vegetation variation between the pit and the pit slope at the tiankeng. The secondary collapse over the talus with mid-slope could conserve more water, which supported the water-demanding species in a high-quality niche. All the α diversity indices including Margalef (3.58), Shannon (2.47), Simpson (0.79) and Pielou (0.86) reached the maximum at the pit bottom edge with slight variability, and the maximum coefficient of variation was only 0.226. The ß diversity index fluctuated greatly among the pit-pit, slope-pit, bottom edge. The Routledge and Whilson-Shmida indices showed the trends of decrease-increase-decrease, with the maximum values of 15.95 and 1.20, respectively. Species turnover demonstrated the upward trend overall, and the number of co-species was decreased. Plant diversity on each slope position was mainly related to the contents of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus and organic carbon in soil. Soil was the most important factor leading to the difference among slope positions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To perform the cross-cultural adaption of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measurement (BCAM) and to test its psychometric properties among Chinese women. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: This study was conducted in communities, schools and institutions in Changchun, Jilin Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 328 women voluntarily participated in and completed the Chinese version of the BCAM (C-BCAM), resulting in an effective response rate of 91.1%. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Psychometric properties, including item analysis (the extreme group comparison and item-total correlations), content validity (item-level content validity index (I-CVI) and scale-level content validity index (S-CVI)), construct validity (exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α and test-retest reliability), were measured. RESULTS: The C-BCAM has excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.90), with alpha coefficients of 0.88, 0.84 and 0.94 for its three domains. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.72. The I-CVI ranged from 0.86 to 1.00, and the S-CVI was 0.92. CFA showed that the three-factor model explained 51.56% of the total variance, with a good model fit (likelihood ratio χ2/df=1.86, incremental fit index=0.94, comparative fit index=0.94, goodness-of-fit index=0.84, adjusted goodness-of-fit index=0.80, standardised root mean square error of approximation=0.06 and root mean square residual=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The C-BCAM has satisfactory validity and reliability and is a culturally appropriate and reliable tool for evaluating breast cancer awareness among Chinese women. This reliable instrument can help researchers and health professionals evaluate women's knowledge about the symptoms and risk factors of breast cancer and identify their barriers to seeking medical help. It also helps healthcare providers identify women with poor breast cancer awareness and encourage them to perform screening practice.

ABSTRACT

We carried out niche monitoring and analysis of plant populations under the forest community in the talus slope ecotone of a typical moderate-degraded Bajiaxiantang tiankeng to provide scientific references for biodiversity conservation and vegetation restoration in degraded tiankeng area. The results showed that soil ammonium, available potassium, and available phosphorus signifi-cantly affected species distribution, which explained 37.4%, 32.8%, 29.3% of the total variation, respectively. With the change of talus slope of tiankeng (pit, uphill, mid-slope, downhill and pit bottom), life form of understory plants changed from evergreen and xerophytes to evergreen and hygro-mesophytes, with the niche overlap of herbs being larger than that of shrubs. Shrubs of Viburnum congestum and Campylotropis polyantha, and herbs of Arisaema erubescens and Arthraxon hispidus had wide ecological amplitude and strong resistance, which occupied the upper layer of the shrub and herb layers. Shrub Cornus oblonga and herb Geranium nepalense, Agrimonia pilosa lost the competitiveness with increasing soil alkalinity. Niche characteristics of understory dominant species in Bajiaxiantang were closely related to the canopy structure of mixed trees, ecological strategies of shrub and herb species, unique habitat of tiankeng, and the importance value of dominant species.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vasomotor symptoms (VMS) are very common in menopausal populations and cancer patients and can cause physical and mental discomfort. We aim to summarize the findings of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) that assessed the effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicines(CAMs)on VMS to provide solid evidence for future practice. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched from inception to May 2019 to identify relevant SRs/MAs. The methodological quality of SRs/MAs and evidence levels of the outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 29 SRs/MAs were reviewed. Evidence has shown that acupuncture, hypnosis, paced respiration, cognitive behavioural therapy, genistein, soy isoflavones, S-equol, combined preparations of black cohosh, and omega-3 supplements could significantly reduce VMS. The methodological quality of the SRs/MAs was moderate or high. CONCLUSION: CAMs might be beneficial for reducing VMS, but the evidence levels were not high. Several priorities for future practice were identified.

ABSTRACT

After invading the grand negative landform karst degraded tiankeng, Eupatorium adenophorum will affect the plant diversity, community succession and natural ecological restoration of degraded tiankeng by changing soil microbial community. Taking the degraded tiankeng "Bajiaxiantang" as the research area, the soil around E. adenophorum roots in different habitats was selected to explore the microbial community characteristics of E. adenophorum roots using the Biolog-ECO micro-plate method. The results showed that the invasion degree of E. adenophorum was in order of pit slope shrub-grassland > pit bottom grassland > pit slope forest > pit head shrub-grassland. The characteristics of E. adenophorum varied among different habitats due to habitat heterogeneity. The change of microbial community metabolic activity, dominance index, richness index and evenness index of E. adenophorum roots was closely related with the invasion degree, with significant diffe-rence between inside and outside of the tiankeng. Amino acids and polymers were the main carbon sources utilized by soil microorganism. The α diversity of herbaceous plants in different habitats were correlated with that of soil microbial community. The diversity of soil microbial community around E. adenophorum roots increased significantly with the increases of invasion level, which could form a microenvironment conducive to invasion and colonization. In the future, the degraded tiankeng would eventually form the climax community of underground forests with community succession and natural ecological restoration, which might result in the disappearance of E. adenophorum in the degraded tiankeng.
