ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess ultrashort-TE magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) imaging of collagen degradation using an in vitro model of rotator cuff tendinopathy. METHODS: Thirty-six supraspinatus tendon specimens were divided into three groups and treated with 600 U collagenase (Group 1), 150 U collagenase (Group 2), and phosphate buffer saline (Group 3). UTE-MT imaging was performed to assess changes in macromolecular fraction (MMF), macromolecule transverse relaxation time (T2m), water longitudinal relaxation rate constant (R1m), the magnetization exchange rate from the macromolecular to water pool (Rm0 w) and from water to the macromolecular pool (Rm0 m), and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) at baseline and following digestion and their differences between groups. Biochemical and histological studies were conducted to determine the extent of collagen degradation. Correlation analyses were performed with MMF, T2m, R1m, Rm0 w, Rm0 m, and MTR, respectively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate combinations of UTE-MT parameters to predict collagen degradation. RESULTS: MMF, T2m, R1m, Rm0 m, and MTR decreased after digestion. MMF (r = -0.842, p < 0.001), MTR (r = -0.78, p < 0.001), and Rm0 m (r = -0.662, p < 0.001) were strongly negatively correlated with collagen degradation. The linear regression model of differences in MMF and Rm0 m before and after digestion explained 68.9% of collagen degradation variation in the tendon. The model of postdigestion in MMF and T2m and the model of MTR explained 54.2% and 52.3% of collagen degradation variation, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the potential of UTE-MT parameters for evaluation of supraspinatus tendinopathy.

ABSTRACT

Converging studies showed interstitial fluid (ISF) adjacent to blood vessels flows in adventitia along vasculature into heart and lungs. We aim to reveal circulatory pathways and regulatory mechanism of such adventitial ISF flow in rat model. By MRI, real-time fluorescent imaging, micro-CT, and histological analysis, ISF was found to flow in adventitial matrix surrounded by fascia and along systemic vessels into heart, then flow into lungs via pulmonary arteries and back to heart via pulmonary veins, which was neither perivascular tissues nor blood or lymphatic vessels. Under physiological conditions, speckle-like adventitial ISF flow rate was positively correlated with heart rate, increased when holding breath, became pulsative during heavy breathing. During cardiac or respiratory cycle, each dilation or contraction of heart or lungs can generate to-and-fro adventitial ISF flow along femoral veins. Discovered regulatory mechanisms of adventitial ISF flow along vasculature by heart and lungs will revolutionize understanding of cardiovascular system.

ABSTRACT

Diet is the most direct and rapid contributor to the gut microbiome. Oils and fats are important nutrients in the human body. The effects of lard or vegetable blend oil on gut microbiota were investigated. Kunming mice were given lard or vegetable blend oil for six weeks. Changes in microbiota composition and abundance in lard or vegetable blend oil diets were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Our study shows that the gut microbiota of mice changed significantly after ingestion of lard or vegetable blend oil. Lard may synergize with Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002. Vegetable blend oil has synergistic effects with Akkermansia, Roseburia, and Enteractinococcus. Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002 showed a significant negative correlation with Glycolysis/Gluconeogenesis. Roseburia was most strongly associated with Starch and sucrose metabolism. According to bacterial function prediction and correlation analysis, long-term consumption of lard or vegetable oil may affect glycolipid metabolism, but lard has a greater impact on human health and consequently host health.

ABSTRACT

The interface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) determines their power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, the buried bottom surface of a perovskite film is efficiently passivated by using MoS2 quantum dots. The perovskite films prepared on top of MoS2-assisted substrates show enhanced crystallinity, as evidenced by improved photoluminescence and a prolonged emission lifetime. MoS2 quantum dots with a large bandgap of 2.68 eV not only facilitate hole collection but also prevent the photogenerated electrons from flowing to the hole transport layer. Overall promotion leads to decreased trap density and an enhanced built-in electric field, thus increasing the device PCE from 17.87% to 19.95%.

ABSTRACT

Zirconia is widely used in the field of dentistry because of its superior mechanical and esthetic characteristics. However, the tetragonal zirconia polycrystal restorations commonly used in clinics will degrade at low temperatures in the oral environment, resulting in increased surface roughness, microcracks, and decreased mechanical properties. Low-temperature degradation of zirconia can be affected by grain size, stress, stabilizer content and type, surface treatment, sintering conditions, and other factors. Through a literature review and analysis, this review summarizes the research progress on the low-temperature degradation of zirconia in prosthetic dentistry to provide references for the improvement of zirconia in clinical and research applications.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the pink and white esthetics of conventional and socket shield technique (SST) immediate implant restoration. Methods: Thirty volunteers were recruited according to preset criteria, and were assigned to 3 groups. Natural teeth group (ten undergraduates or postgraduates from Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology in January 2020, n=10): all volunteers' maxillary anterior teeth were natural teeth with healthy gingiva, and none of the teeth were restored by crowns or composite. Conventional group and SST group (patients had a maxillary central incisor immediate implant placed in Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology during October 2016 to January 2021, n=10 for each group): the volunteer had an unrestored natural maxillary central incisor, and the contralateral maxillary central incisor was restored by conventional or SST immediate implant placement, temporization and all ceramic final restoration, photos were taken 12 months post-surgery. Three groups of evaluators namely layperson (staff from Second Clinical Division of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology and 2 family members, n=10), dental students (class 2015 undergraduates from Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, n=10) and prosthodontists (from Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, n=10) were invited to assess the esthetics using pink esthetic score (PES) and white esthetic score (WES). The results were statistically analyzed. Results: PES and WES of natural teeth group [9(8, 10) and 8(7, 10)] were significantly higher than conventional group [7(6,8) and 7(6,9)] (H=287.08, 132.79,P<0.01) and SST group [7(6, 9) and 8(7, 9)] (H=216.01, 101.21, P<0.01). SST group yielded higher PES than the conventional group (H=-71.06, P<0.01), yet had similar WES (H=-31.57, P>0.05). Dental students had significant lower PES and WES than prosthodontists (H=-120.90, -218.86, P<0.01) and layperson (H=-109.55, 134.97, P<0.01). Prosthodontists and layperson got similar PES (H=-11.36, P>0.05), however yielded different WES (H=-83.89, P<0.01). Conclusions: SST immediate implant placement obtained better pink esthetics than conventional protocol 12-month after implant surgery, profession may have significant impact on evaluators during pink and white esthetic evaluation.

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the marginal roughness and marginal fitness of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) laminate veneers with different materials and thicknesses, and to provide a reference for the clinical application of laminate veneers.@*METHODS@#The butt-to-butt type laminate veneers were prepared on resin typodonts, the preparations were scanned, and the laminate veneers were manufactured by chairside CAD/CAM equipment. The laminate veneers were divided into four groups (n=9) according to the materials (glass-matrix ceramics and resin-matrix ceramics) and thickness (0.3 mm and 0.5 mm) of the veneers, with a total of 36. The marginal topo-graphies of each laminate veneer were digitally recorded by stereomicroscope, and the marginal rough-nesses of the laminate veneers were determined by ImageJ software. The marginal fitness of the laminate veneers was measured by a fit checker and digital scanning and measuring method. At the same time, the mechanical properties of glass-matrix ceramic and resin-matrix ceramic bars (n=20) were tested by a universal testing device.@*RESULTS@#The marginal roughness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was (24.48±5.55) μm and (19.06±5.75) μm, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The marginal roughness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was (6.13±1.27) μm and (6.84±2.19) μm, respectively, without a statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The marginal roughness of the glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was higher than that of the resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The marginal fitness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers were (66.30±26.71) μm and (85.48±30.44) μm, respectively. The marginal fitness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers were (56.42±19.27) μm and (58.36±8.33) μm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among the 4 groups (P>0.05). For glass-matrix ceramics, the flexural strength was (327.40±54.25) MPa, the flexural modulus was (44.40±4.39) GPa, and the modulus of resilience was (1.24±0.37) MPa. For resin-matrix ceramics, the flexural strength was (173.71±16.61) MPa, the flexural modulus was (11.88±0.51) GPa, and the modulus of resilience was (1.29±0.27) MPa. The flexural strength and modulus of glass-matrix ceramics were significantly higher than those of resin-matrix ceramics (P < 0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference in the modulus of resilience between the two materials (P>0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The marginal roughness of CAD/CAM glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers is greater than that of resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers, but there was no statistically significant difference in marginal fitness among them. Increasing the thickness can reduce the marginal roughness of glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers, but has no effect on the marginal roughness of resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the effect of a noval radio-frequency atmospheric-pressure glow discharge (RF-APGD) plasma jet on crosslinking of dentin collagen.@*METHODS@#(1) Twenty intact third molars were collected. The middle dentin discs were prepared for each tooth by low-speed water-cooled Isomet saw, and then immersed in 10% (mass fraction) H3PO4 solution for 16 h to obtain fully demine-ralized dentin collagen. The twenty dentin discs were then randomly divided into five groups. The control group was untreated while the four experimental groups were treated by plasma jet with gas temperature of 4 ℃ for different times (20 s, 30 s, 40 s, and 50 s). The structure and crosslinking degree of dentin collagen were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphology of demineralized dentin was observed by scanning electron microscope, and the microstructure was observed by transmission electron microscope. (2) Fourty non-caries third molars were collected to prepare 5 g fine dentin powder, then completely demineralized with 10% H3PO4 solution. The control group was untreated, while the four experimental groups were treated by plasma jet for 20 s, 30 s, 40 s and 50 s. The crosslinking degree of each group was determined by ninhydrin colorimetric method. (3) Forty intact third molars were collected to obtain dentin strips. Only two central symmetrical dentin strips (nasty 80) were taken from each tooth and immersed in 10% H3PO4 solution for 16 h to obtain fully demineralized dentin collagen. Eighty dentine collagen fiber strips were randomly divided into five groups. The control group was untreated and the axial surfaces of dentin collagen fiber strips in the expe-rimental groups were treated with the plasma jet for 20 s, 30 s, 40 s and 50 s. The ultimate tensile strength of dentin was measured by universal mechanical machine.@*RESULTS@#(1) The surface morphology of demineralized dentin observed by scanning electron microscope showed that the network structure of collagen fibers on the surface of demineralized dentin treated with the plasma jet for 20 s, 30 s and 40 s could maintain the uncollapsed three-dimensional structure, and part of the microstructure was destroyed after plasma jet treated for 50 s. After being treated by plasma jet for 20 s, 30 s and 40 s, the three-dimensional structure was uncollapsed, and the typical periodic transverse pattern of natural type Ⅰ collagen fiber could be seen. The results of infrared spectra showed that the secondary conformation of dentin collagen fibers was the same as that of the control group after being treated with the plasma jet, and the intensity of amide band was significantly increased after being treated for 30 s and 40 s. (2) The results of ninhydrin crosslinking test showed that the crosslinking ratio of dentin collagen treated by plasma jet for 30 s and 40 s was the highest, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). (3) The results of dentin ultimate tensile strength showed that the control group was (1.67±0.24) MPa, and the plasma jet treated 20 s, 30 s, 40 s and 50 s groups were (4.21±0.15) MPa, (7.06±0.30) MPa, (7.32±0.27) MPa, and (6.87±0.17) MPa, which were significantly different from that of the control group (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The novel RF-APGD plasma jet treatment can promote the crosslinking degree of demineralized dentin collagen and improve their ultimate tensile strength.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences have improved imaging of short T2 musculoskeletal (MSK) tissues. UTE-MRI combined with magnetization transfer modeling (UTE-MT) has demonstrated robust assessment of MSK tissues. This study aimed to investigate the variation of UTE-MT measures under mechanical loading in tibiofemoral cartilage and meniscus of cadaveric knee joints. DESIGN: Fourteen knee joints from young (n = 8, 42 ± 12 years old) and elderly (n = 6, 89 ± 4 years old) donors were scanned on a 3-T scanner under 3 loading conditions: load = 300 N (Load1), load = 500 N (Load2), and load = 0 N (Unload). UTE-MT sequences were performed at each loading condition. Macromolecular proton fraction (MMF) was calculated from UTE-MT modeling. Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to examine the MRI data differences between loading conditions. RESULTS: For young donors, MMF increased in all grouped regions of interest (meniscus [M], femoral articular cartilage [FAC], tibial articular cartilage [TAC], articular cartilage regions covered by meniscus [AC-MC], and articular cartilage regions uncovered by meniscus [AC-UC]) when the load increased from 300 to 500 N. The increases in MMF were significant for M (13.3%, P < 0.01) and AC-MC (9.2%, P = 0.04). MMF decreased in all studied regions after unloading, which was significant only for AC-MC (-8.9%, P = 0.01). For elderly donors, MRI parameters did not show significant changes by loading or unloading. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the potential of the UTE-MT modeling combined with knee loading in differentiating between normal and abnormal knees. Average tissue deformation effects were likely higher and more uniformly distributed in the joints of young donors compared with elderly donors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the morphology accuracy of direct occlusal veneer using two types of modified stamp-technique, comparing the Results of two types of stamp and different composite resin.@*METHODS@#Model scanner was used to get the original data from the standard resin teeth in plastic model. Two types of stamps were made: solid silicon stamp and transparent silicon stamp. In the study, 54 resin tooth were randomly divided into 9 groups: Groups 1-8 were restored by direct composite resin, using general and bulk-filled composite resin in occlusal veneer (1 mm or 2 mm) with two types of stamp-technique (the solid silicon, and the transparent silicon), and the control group was restored by indirect way using CAD/CAM composite resin restoration by biocopy technique to mimic the original shape of the teeth. After the resin teeth were prepared for occlusal veneer, the direct and indirect composite resins were restored. After the restoration was finished, the data were obtained again by the same model scanner in the plastic model. 3D comparisons were made using the original and restoration data, the average difference and the root mean square of difference (RMS) were recoded from the software. The RMS of all the groups were analyzed using one way ANOVA (α=0.05).@*RESULTS@#The RMS of occlusal surface in solid silicon stamp group was (0.136±0.031) mm, in transparent silicon group was (0.130±0.024) mm, and in control group was (0.130±0.009) mm. There were no significant difference. While the RMS of buccal/lingual surface in solid silicon stamp group was the smallest [(0.135±0.020) mm, P < 0.05], and in transparent silicon group it was (0.147±0.021) mm, and control group (0.153±0.014) mm. The general composite resin using the two types of stamp had the largest occlusal RMS in 2 mm occlusal veneer, which were significantly larger than control group (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The direct occlusal veneer using two types of modified "stamp-technique" had relatively good morphology accuracy. Direct occlusal veneer using bulk-filled composite resin made with two types of stamp technique had even more accurate morphology than using general composite resin. The solid silicon stamp had a better morphology accuracy in buccal/lingual surface than the transparent silicon stamp.

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the movement of posterior teeth after losing the interproximal and occlusal contacts in adults from the amount and speed of mesial-distal, buccal-lingual, occlusal-gingival and three-dimensional movements.@*METHODS@#Twenty cases of metal post-core restoration from the Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were recruited into this study, which was an observational study. The restored teeth had complete mesial, distal, and occlusal contacts before treatment. All the interproximal and occlusal contacts were removed during the preparation for the post-core. The three-dimensional positions of the post-core preparation were obtained by the intraoral scanner at the day of tooth preparation and that of post-core placement. The amounts of mesial-distal, buccal-lingual and occlusal-gingival tooth movement were measured in the software. On this basis, the amount of three-dimensional tooth movement was calculated. The speed of tooth movement was calculated based on the elapsed time between the two scans.@*RESULTS@#Ten females and ten males with an average age of (29.5±4.9) years were recruited. The average elapsed time was (10.9±2.7) days. The amount of the mesial-distal tooth movement was (134.8±61.2) μm, of the buccal-lingual tooth movement was (110.3±39.5) μm, of the occlusal-gingival tooth movement was (104.8±57.5) μm, and of the three-dimensional tooth movement was (211.4±71.0) μm, respectively. The amounts of mesial-distal, buccal-lingual and three-dimensional tooth movements were larger in female than in male (P < 0.05). The speed of the mesial-distal tooth movement was (13.1±7.8) μm/d, of the buccal-lingual tooth movement was (10.6±4.5) μm/d, of the occlusal-gingival tooth movement was (10.1±6.8) μm/d, and of the three-dimensional tooth movement was (20.5±9.7) μm/d, respectively. The speed of mesial-distal and buccal-lingual tooth movements were larger in female than in male (P < 0.05). The speed of three-dimensional tooth movement was slightly larger in female than in male, while there was no significant difference between different genders (P>0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The three-dimensional position of posterior teeth changed after losing the interproximal and occlusal contacts in adults. The female had more significant and faster tooth movement than the male.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We describe the measurement of bound water T1 ( T1BW ) of cortical bone in vitro and in vivo with a 3D adiabatic inversion recovery ultrashort echo time (IR-UTE) Cones sequence using a clinical 3T scanner. METHODS: A series IR-UTE data from 6 repetition times (TRs) with 5 inversion times (TIs) at each TR were acquired from 12 human tibial bone specimens, and data from 4 TRs with 5 TIs at each TR were acquired from the tibial midshafts of 8 healthy volunteers. The pore water nulling point was calculated from exponential fitting of the inversion recovery curve at each TR. Bone specimens and volunteers were then scanned again with the calculated nulling point at each TR. T1BW was derived through exponential fitting of data from IR-UTE images acquired at different TRs using the calculated pore water nulling point for each TR. RESULTS: In vitro pore water nulling TIs were 141.3 ± 11.6, 123.4 ± 8.9, 101.3 ± 6.2, 88.9 ± 5.3, 74.8 ± 4.2, and 59.2 ± 3.9 ms for the 6 TRs of 500, 400, 300, 250, 200, and 150 ms, respectively. In vivo pore water nulling TIs were 132.8 ± 12.8, 110.3 ± 10.0, 80.0 ± 7.2, and 63.9 ± 5.4 ms for the 4 TRs of 400, 300, 200, and 150 ms, respectively. Excellent exponential fitting was achieved for IR-UTE imaging of bound water with pore water nulled at each TR. The mean T1BW was 106.9 ± 6.3 ms in vitro and 112.3 ± 16.4 ms in vivo. CONCLUSION: Using the 3D IR-UTE Cones with a variable TR/TI approach, T1BW of cortical bone was calculated after complete nulling of pore water signals.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the blood pressure and heart rate changes and influencing factors during single dental implant surgery.@*METHODS@#A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Six hundred and forty cases underwent single dental implant placement in Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from January 2016 to December 2016 were recruited in this study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were divided into different groups according to the exposure factors which were patient characteristics (gender, age) and surgical procedures (immediate placement, flap elevation, bone grafting). The correlation between blood pressure and heart rate variability during single dental implant surgery and the patient characteristics and surgical procedures were analyzed.@*RESULTS@#The average systolic blood pressure variability was 9.47%±6.45% (maximum 46.04%), the average diastolic blood pressure variability was 12.18%±9.39% (maximum 88.00%), and the average heart rate variability was 10.59%±7.68% (maximum 49.12%). The effects of age and bone grafting on blood pressure variability, and of gender and immediate placement on heart rate variability, were statistically significant (P < 0.05), respectively. The incidence of abnormal intraoperative blood pressure rise was 4.69%, of which there were 4 cases (0.63%) of systolic blood pressure ≥180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥110 mmHg. The incidence of abnormal intraoperative heart rate rise was 6.72%. Hierarchical analysis showed a higher risk of abnormal intraoperative blood pressure rise in the elderly (≥60 years) male patients [P < 0.05, RR=3.409 (95%CI: 1.155-10.062) ] and flap elevation with bone grafting cases [P < 0.05, RR=2.382 (95%CI: 1.126-5.040)], respectively. There was no statistically significant association between abnormal heart rate rise and patient characteristics or surgical procedures (P>0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#There was a certain risk of blood pressure and heart rate variability during dental implant surgery. Elderly male patients and flap elevation with bone grafting were risk factors of abnormal intraoperative blood pressure rise.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the esthetic proportions of maxillary anterior teeth in term of the apparent widths proportion of the adjacent teeth and width/height ratio of the clinical crown in 120 Chinese adults.@*METHODS@#Maxillary gypsum casts were obtained from the dental laboratories of stomatological hospitals in North China, Southeast China, and Southwest China, according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Standardized digital photographs of each cast were recorded. The apparent widths and actual widths and heights of the central incisors, lateral incisors and canines were determined by ImageJ software for the calculation of apparent widths proportion of the adjacent teeth and width/height ratio of the clinical crown. The ideal apparent widths proportion (Golden proportion and Preston proportion) and width/height ratio (0.80) were tested. The gender, arch side, and regional differences were investigated.@*RESULTS@#The apparent widths proportion of the lateral/central incisor was 0.724±0.047, of the canine/lateral incisor was 0.814±0.092. The width/height ratio of the central incisor was 0.848±0.072, of the lateral incisor was 0.834±0.094, of the canine was 0.883±0.098. The esthetic proportions were different from the predicted ideal ratio (P < 0.001). The apparent widths proportion of lateral/central incisor was significantly larger in the right side than that in the left side (0.730± 0.044 vs. 0.718±0.050), and was significantly smaller in North China than that in Southwest China (0.711±0.051 vs. 0.731±0.044). The width/height ratio of the central incisor was significantly larger in the female than that in the male (0.855±0.074 vs. 0.835±0.068), and in the right side than that in the left side (0.855±0.073 vs. 0.842±0.072). The width/height ratio of the lateral incisor was significantly larger in the female than that in the male (0.843±0.097 vs. 0.817±0.084).@*CONCLUSION@#The apparent widths proportion of adjacent teeth and the width/height ratio of the clinical crown in Chinese adults are different from the foreigner's. The esthetic proportion parameters have significant population specificity, and the measurements cannot be generalized as well as it should be applied with caution.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To assess the effects of loupes and microscope on the posture of prosthodontists when preparing the laminate veneer, and to assess the clinical value of loupes and microscope from the ergonomic aspects.@*METHODS@#Twenty young prosthodontists from Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were recruited into this study, which was a prospective, single blind, self-control trials. The research hypothesis was concealed and the participants were deceived about the precise purpose of the study to counterbalance the lack of direct blinding. The prosthodontists prepared laminate veneers of open window type in the artificial dental model, under routine visual field (control group), 2.5× headwear loupes (loupes group), and 8× operating microscope (microscopic group) by turning. The participants were photographed from profile view and front view. Thereafter, the subjective assessment was performed by themselves using the visual analogue score (VAS). The expert assessment was performed by two professors using modified-dental operator posture assessment instrument on the basis of photographs of the profile view and front view.@*RESULTS@#The subjective assessment scores for the control group, loupes group and microscopic group were 4.55±1.96, 7.90±1.12, and 9.00±0.92, respectively. There was significant difference between the three groups' subjective scores (P < 0.05). The expert assessment scores for the control group, loupes group and microscopic group were 16.38±1.52, 15.15±1.30, and 13.60±0.88, respectively. There was significant difference between the three groups' expert assessment scores (P < 0.05). Specifically, the three groups' expert assessment scores were significantly different (P < 0.05) in trunk position (front to back) (1.33±0.41, 1.03±0.11, 1.00±0.00), head and neck position (front to back) (2.75±0.38, 2.13±0.36, 1.23±0.38), elbows level (1.38±0.43, 1.40±0.45, 1.13±0.22), and shoulders level (1.43±0.41, 1.23±0.34, 1.13±0.28). Thereinto, the microscopic group was better than loupes group in head and neck position (front to back) and elbows level (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Loupes and microscope improve the posture of the prosthodontist when preparing the laminate veneer, in which the microscope is better than loupes. Therefore, the magnification devices have clinical value from the ergonomic aspects.

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the correlation between the clinical diagnostic criteria of sleep bruxism and the frequency of mandibular movements during sleep.@*METHODS@#Video polysomnography was used to record 20 healthy adults with at least one of the following clinical symptoms and signs: 1) report of frequent tooth grinding; 2) tooth wear and dentin exposure with at least three occlusal surfaces; 3) masticatory muscle symptoms in the morning; 4) masseter muscle hypertrophy. The rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) and isolated tonic activity were scored to compare the correlations with clinical symptoms and signs. Finally, the incidence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) was investigated in patients with isolated tonic and RMMA subjects.@*RESULTS@#Among the 20 subjects, RMMA events were observed (5.8±3.1) times·h⁻¹ and isolated tonic episodes were observed (2.1±0.9) times·h⁻¹. The frequency of RMMA events was significantly greater in the patients with acoustic molars than in those without (P<0.05). Similarly, the frequency of RMMA events was significantly greater in the patients with tooth attrition than in those without (P<0.05). However, no difference was observed between the occurrence of RMMA and the symptoms of masticatory muscles or masseter hypertrophy in the morning. The incidence of TMD was significantly higher in the patients with RMMA than in the isolated tonic patients.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The clinical symptoms and signs often used to diagnose sleep bruxism are different clinical and physiological mandibular movements during sleep. RMMA during sleep can reflect the occurrence of tooth attrition and the high risk of TMD.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Quantitative imaging methods could improve diagnosis of rotator cuff degeneration, but the capability of quantitative MR and US imaging parameters to detect alterations in collagen is unknown. The goal of this study was to assess quantitative MR and US imaging measures for detecting abnormalities in collagen using an in vitro model of tendinosis with biochemical and histological correlation. METHOD: 36 pieces of supraspinatus tendons from 6 cadaveric donors were equally distributed into 3 groups (2 subjected to different concentrations of collagenase and a control group). Ultrashort echo time MR and US imaging measures were performed to assess changes at baseline and after 24 h of enzymatic digestion. Biochemical and histological measures, including brightfield, fluorescence, and polarized microscopy, were used to verify the validity of the model and were compared with quantitative imaging parameters. Correlations between the imaging parameters and biochemically measured digestion were analyzed. RESULTS: Among the imaging parameters, macromolecular fraction (MMF), adiabatic T1ρ, T2*, and backscatter coefficient (BSC) were useful in differentiating between the extent of degeneration among the 3 groups. MMF strongly correlated with collagen loss (r=-0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.90,-0.66), while the adiabatic T1ρ (r = 0.66; CI: 0.42,0.81), T2* (r = 0.58; CI: 0.31,0.76), and BSC (r = 0.51; CI: 0.22,0.72) moderately correlated with collagen loss. CONCLUSIONS: MMF, adiabatic T1ρ, and T2* measured and US BSC can detect alterations in collagen. Of the quantitative MR and US imaging measures evaluated, MMF showed the highest correlation with collagen loss and can be used to assess rotator cuff degeneration.

ABSTRACT

Cortical bone assessment using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently received great attention in an effort to avoid the potential harm associated with ionizing radiation-based techniques. Ultrashort echo time MRI (UTE-MRI) techniques can acquire signal from major hydrogen proton pools in cortical bone, including bound and pore water, as well as from the collagen matrix. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility of a technique for mapping bound water, pore water, and collagen proton densities in human cortical bone ex vivo and in vivo using three-dimensional UTE Cones (3D-UTE-Cones) MRI. Eight human tibial cortical bone specimens (63 ±â€¯19 years old) were scanned using 3D-UTE-Cones sequences on a clinical 3 T MRI scanner and a micro-computed tomography (µCT) scanner. Total, bound, and pore water proton densities (TWPD, BWPD, and PWPD, respectively) were measured using UTE and inversion recovery UTE (IR-UTE) imaging techniques. Macromolecular proton density (MMPD), a collagen representation, was measured using TWPD and macromolecular fraction (MMF) obtained from two-pool UTE magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) modeling. The correlations between proton densities and µCT-based measures were investigated. The 3D-UTE-Cones techniques were further applied on ten young healthy (34 ±â€¯3 years old) and five old (78 ±â€¯6 years old) female volunteers to evaluate the techniques' feasibility for translational clinical applications. In the ex vivo study, PWPD showed the highest correlations with bone porosity and bone mineral density (BMD) (R = 0.79 and - 0.70, p < 0.01). MMPD demonstrated moderate to strong correlations with bone porosity and BMD (R = -0.67 and 0.65, p < 0.01). MMPD showed strong correlation with age in specimens from female donors (R = -0.91, p = 0.03, n = 5). The presented comprehensive 3D-UTE-Cones imaging protocol allows quantitative mapping of protons in major pools of cortical bone ex vivo and in vivo. PWPD and MMPD can serve as potential novel biomarkers to assess bone matrix and microstructure, as well as bone age- or injury-related variations.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to develop a 3D adiabatic inversion recovery prepared ultrashort echo time Cones (3D IR-UTE-Cones) sequence for high resolution and contrast imaging of the region of osteochondral junction (OCJ) of human knee joint using a clinical 3 T scanner. A feasibility study on direct imaging of the OCJ region was performed on a human patellar cartilage sample and on eight cadaveric knee joints using T1 -weighted, proton density (PD)-weighted and short-T2 -weighted 3D IR-UTE-Cones sequences. Contrast to noise ratio was measured to evaluate the effectiveness of the 3D IR-UTE-Cones sequences for selective imaging of the OCJ region. Computed tomography imaging was performed in parallel for the cadaveric knee joints. The optimized T1 -weighted 3D IR-UTE-Cones sequence was used to image the knee joints of eight healthy volunteers and six patients with osteoarthritis (OA) to evaluate morphological changes in the OCJ region. Clinical PD- and T2 -weighted FSE sequences were also performed for comparison. The T1 -weighted 3D IR-UTE-Cones sequence showed high resolution and contrast bright band of the normal OCJ region in the cadaveric joints. Normal OCJ appearances were also seen in healthy volunteers. Abnormal OCJ regions, manifested as ill-defined, focal loss or non-visualization of the high intensity band adjacent to the subchondral bone plate, were observed in the knee joints of both ex vivo and in vivo OA patients. The 3D IR-UTE-Cones sequence can image OCJ regions ex vivo and in vivo, with abnormalities depicted with high resolution and contrast. The technique may be useful for demonstrating involvement of OCJ regions in early OA.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging, fat suppression can improve short T2 * contrast but can also reduce short T2 * signals. The conventional two-point Dixon (2p-Dixon) method does not perform well due to short T2 * decay. In this study, we propose a new method to suppress fat for high contrast UTE imaging of short T2 tissues, utilizing a single-point Dixon (1p-Dixon) method. METHODS: The proposed method utilizes dual-echo UTE imaging, where UTE is followed by the second TE, chosen flexibly. Fat is estimated by applying a 1p-Dixon method to the non-UTE image after correction of phase errors, which is used to suppress fat in the UTE image. In vivo ankle and knee imaging were performed at 3 T to evaluate the proposed method. RESULT: It was observed that fat and water signals in tendons were misestimated by the 2p-Dixon method due to signal decay, while the 1p-Dixon method showed reliable fat and water separation not affected by the short T2 * signal decay. Compared with the conventional chemical shift based fat saturation technique, the 1p-Dixon based approach showed much stronger signal intensities in the Achilles, quadriceps, and patellar tendons, with significantly improved contrast to noise ratios (CNRs) of 11.8 ± 2.2, 16.0 ± 1.6, and 26.8 ± 1.3 with the 1p-Dixon method and 0.6 ± 0.2, 4.6 ± 1.0, and 17.5 ± 1.4 with regular fat saturation, respectively. CONCLUSION: The proposed 1p-Dixon based fat suppression allows more flexible selection of imaging parameters and more accurate fat and water separation over the conventional 2p-Dixon in UTE imaging. Moreover, the proposed method provides much improved CNR for short T2 tissues over the conventional fat saturation method.
