ABSTRACT

Wetland vegetation plays a crucial role in wetland conservation policy formulation and global climate change research. This study analyzed remotely sensed images of West Dongting Lake (DTL) Wetland from 1994 to 2020. This wetland is one of the most important wetlands in the world. At the pixel scale, we applied the histogram comparison approach, the range variability analysis (RVA) method, and the structural equation model (SEM) to quantify spatial changes in the hydrological conditions of wetland lakes and the ecological effects of environmental factors (precipitation, temperature, nutrients, water coverage) on vegetation. We propose a climate (C) - hydrological status (S) - vegetation response (R) (CSR) framework to elucidate the propagation relationships between climate, hydrology, and wetland vegetation conditions. The study found that the hydrological degradation promotes the succession of vegetation into the lake, and the distribution is concentrated in the northern Yangtze River inflow area. And the extent of hydrological changes in the West DTL region reached 34.5% during the flood period. In addition, the post-dam period showed a high degree of hydro-ecological failure, accounting for 65% of the total. Within the wetland area, there was a significant negative correlation between water coverage nutrient levels and bare vegetation within the lake area. Nutrient levels were also significantly negatively correlated with wetland vegetation conditions. Rainfall and temperature influence wetland vegetation by affecting the condition of the water body. This research provides valuable insights into managing wetland water resources and ecological restoration under the influence of climate change and human activities and provides a basis for decision-making.

ABSTRACT

Climate change and human activities have greatly altered the ecological flow of rivers, and the conflict between human water use and natural water demand is becoming more and more prominent. Using two ecological flow indicators (ecodeficit and ecosurplus), this study focuses on assessing the characteristics of ecological flow changes at multiple time scales and introduces the Long Short-Term Memory model to construct a meteorological streamflow model for the Xiangjiang River (XJR) basin, using a separation framework to quantify the effects of human disturbance and climate change on ecological flow at multiple time scales. In addition, the fluvial biodiversity Shannon Index (SI) was used to assess the response processes of riverine ecosystems under changing conditions. The results show that the increase of XJR flow is larger (11%) after 1991, the increase in precipitation and potential evapotranspiration in the basin is 5.60%, and the decrease is 3.09%, respectively, and there are obvious cycles of all three on annual and seasonal scales. The annual ecosurplus increased, and the annual ecodeficit decreased after the hydrological variation; on the seasonal scale, the ecodeficit decreased significantly in summer and autumn, and the ecosurplus increased substantially in winter. Climatic factors were the main drivers of the increased frequency and magnitude of annual, summer, and fall high flows (91%, 94%, and 65% contributions, respectively), while urbanization expansion and reservoir diversions drove the increase in spring ecodeficit. Changes in river flow maintained the ecosurplus at a low level after 2002, further causing a decrease in river biodiversity, and the annual and summer ecosurplus were highly correlated with SI indicators (0.824 and 0.711, respectively). Our study contributes to the development of effective ecological flow regulation policies for the XJR basin.

ABSTRACT

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are major influences on the hydrological cycle, further altering river hydrological health. However, the characteristics of the forces in driving the variations of hydrological health at long-short time scales (annual, seasonal, monthly), as well as the potential impacts of these variations on aquatic habitats, remain unclear. In this study, the flow threshold method was introduced to identify the inherent characteristics of river hydrological health degree (RHD) evolution in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River (URYR) through the extreme-point symmetric modal decomposition (ESMD) method and range of variation approach (RVA). The RHD under unregulated conditions was reconstructed to quantify the impacts of anthropogenic activities and climate change. Subsequently, a multifractal model was proposed to establish the relationship between RHD and habitat-weighted usage area (WUA) during the spawning period of the Four Famous Major Carps, aiming to analyze the response mechanisms of habitat conditions to RHD fluctuations. The results showed that the RHD in the URYR exhibited degradation characteristics, experiencing a moderate change with a value of 0.44. Climate change was identified as the dominant factor causing the annual-scale decline in RHD, with an average impact weight of 62.9%. At the annual scale, Anthropogenic activities exacerbate (-3.4), counteract (20.1), and counteract (20.5) the adverse climatic impacts at Yichang, Cuntan, and Zhutuo stations, respectively. Additionally, the effect of human activities during the flood season is slight, with the most favorable and unfavorable impacts occurring in December (50.7) at the Zhutuo station and in October (-27.2) at the Yichang station. Under the influence of driving forces, the multifractal correlation of the RHD-WUA system tended to homogenized as the time window increased, indicating the presence of potential nonlinear dependence, asymmetric fractal characteristics, and positive-to-negative persistence transitions. Therefore, modeling river health considering fish habitat cannot be limited to linear paradigms. The findings provide valuable insights for the management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Ecological drought is a complex comprehensive process in which the water conditions for normal growth and development of vegetation are changed due to insufficient water supply. In this study, based on the remotely sensed vegetation health index (VHI) and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS) datasets from 1982 to 2020 in China, the Breaks For Additive Seasons and Trend algorithm (BFAST) was used to analyze the dynamic variations of ecological drought, the standardized regression coefficient method was applied to identify the primary drivers of ecological drought, and the regression analysis was adopted to reveal the coupling effect of atmospheric circulation factors on ecological drought. The results indicated that: (1) the ecological drought showed an overall decreasing trend during 1982-2020 in China, with a negative mutation point that occurred in April 1985; (2) spring drought and summer drought were more likely to occur in the South China, and autumn drought and winter drought were more likely to appear in the Sichuan Basin; (3) the propagation time from meteorological to ecological drought was shorter in summer (2.67 months) and longer in winter (7 months), with average r values of 0.76 and 0.53, respectively; (4) the Trans Polar Index (TPI), Arctic Oscillation (AO) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) had important impacts on ecological drought, which can be used as input factors of drought early warning system to improve the accuracy of drought prediction.

ABSTRACT

Under the influence of climate alteration and human activities, the hydrological regime of rivers is changing dramatically, which has become a hot spot for water environment research. In this study, we quantitatively assessed the degree of hydrological variability of the Jialing River and the contribution of climate alteration and human activities to hydrological alterations using the ecohydrological indicator range of alteration (IHA-RVA) method and Budyko hypothesis formulations. The results showed that (1) The average annual runoff and the precipitation of Jialing River showed a decreasing trend, the potential evapotranspiration showed an increasing trend. (2) Compared with before the hydrological situation changed, the degree of alteration in the annual extreme streamflow is 31%, which is a low degree of alteration; the degree of alteration in monthly streamflow, annual extreme flow magnitude, extreme flow ephemeris, and streamflow alteration frequency are 51%, 43%, 54%, and 64% respectively, which are all moderate degrees of alteration; the overall hydrological alteration is 50%, which belongs to moderate alteration. (3) The contribution of precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and human activities to the runoff alteration is 61%, - 16%, and 55%, respectively. This study provides corresponding references for ecological restoration and sustainable development of the Yangtze River Basin in China.

ABSTRACT

Water temperature is a major driver of riverine ecosystems and has an extremely significant impact on them. Understanding the multi-scale water temperature dynamics in a river basin is critical to analyze the water temperature status of rivers. In this study, the intra-annual and inter-annual time series of water temperature (WT) at Yichang station in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River over the past 62 years was analyzed using complex Morlet wavelet functions to reveal the complex structure of water temperature variation at multiple time scales. The ecological impact of water temperature changes on the reproduction of the "Four Major Chinese Carp" under the influence of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). The results showed that the water temperature at Yichang Station has a multi-level time scale structure, with an increasing trend at the inter-annual scale from 1956 to 2017, but different variations at the seasonal scale, and the water temperature cycles at both the inter-annual and seasonal scales have time scale variations of about 8-14 years and 4-7 years, with obvious characteristics of WT variation stages. The inter-annual and summer scales will have low WT in 2017-2022 and high WT in 2023-2027, while the other seasonal scales will have high WT in the next few years, either in the short or medium term. The correlation between air temperature and WT is the most significant among the three drivers of air temperature, flow and rainfall, and the correlation between WT and the air temperature is the most significant in winter scale under the influence of the Three Gorges Dam construction. Since the completion of TGD in 2003, the summer drainage temperature has decreased and the breeding period of the "Four Major Chinese Carp" has been shortened by 30-40 days compared to that before the construction of TGD. The results of this study can be used as a basis for further exploration of the formation mechanism of river water temperature and provide a scientific basis for river ecological protection.

ABSTRACT

Hydrological problems, such as flood disasters, can be caused by the influence of urbanization on river network structures in plain areas. Taking the main urban region of Zhengzhou city as the research area, based on six remote sensing images from 1992 to 2015, the modified normalized difference water index method and a land-use transfer matrix were used to reconstruct river network data to study the temporal and spatial changes in the river system. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process and the entropy weight method were used to construct pattern indexes of the river system to quantitatively evaluate the inner relationship between the urbanization process and the river network structure in the plain area. The results showed that the percentages of arable land, forest and grassland, water, and unused land in Zhengzhou that was transferred to construction land from 1992 to 2015 were 59.10%, 51.05%, 29.83%, and 58.76%, respectively. In the past 34 years, the morphological indices, structural indices, and connectivity indices of the river system experienced a trend of high to low, and then increased, with the structural indices being significantly correlated with construction land use (p < 0.05). The regression equation R2 between urbanization level and river length, water area, river network density, water surface rate, connection rate, and connectivity ranged from 0.677 to 0.966, which could well reflect the response relationship between urbanization and the river network. In addition, the outflow was greater than the inflow, which has destroyed the natural structure of the channel.

ABSTRACT

Water temperature, as one of the important water environment impact factors, has a significant impact on the survival and development of aquatic organisms. We selected water temperature data (1959-2017) from four key hydrological stations in the Yangtze River: Cuntan, Yichang, Hankou, and Datong. We analyzed the characteristics and variability of the Yangtze River hydrothermal regime by the Mann-Kendall method, wavelet analysis, and by the IHA-RVA method to analyze hydrothermal regime variations of the Yangtze River, and the response mechanisms of fish to variations in hydrothermal regimes were explored. The results show that (1) The annual average water temperature of the Yangtze River is warming, and Cuntan Station, Yichang Station, Hankou Station, and Datong Station have a sudden increase in temperature in 2002, 1995, 2003, and 2004, and the periodicity analysis demonstrates that Cuntan, Yichang, and Datong stations all have main periods of 24~32 years; (2) The overall variations of 32 hydrothermal indicators at Cuntan Station and Yichang Station reached 65% and 61%, which are close to the height variation; (3) With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the stagnant cooling effect caused the arrival date of the upper reproduction water temperature of "The four major fish species" to be delayed by about 23 days, and the stagnant heat effect caused the arrival date of the Chinese sturgeon reproduction upper limit water temperature to be delayed by about 30 days.

ABSTRACT

A simple, cost-effective strategy was developed to effectively improve the electron transfer efficiency as well as the power output of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) by decorating the commercial carbon paper (CP) anode with an advanced Mo2 C/reduced graphene oxide (Mo2 C/RGO) composite. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the superior electrocatalytic activity of Mo2 C, the high surface area, and prominent conductivity of RGO, the MFC equipped with this Mo2 C/RGO composite yielded a remarkable output power density of 1747±37.6 mW m-2 , which was considerably higher than that of CP-MFC (926.8±6.3 mW m-2 ). Importantly, the composite also facilitated the formation of 3D hybrid biofilm and could effectively improve the bacteria-electrode interaction. These features resulted in an enhanced coulombic efficiency up 13.2 %, nearly one order of magnitude higher than that of the CP (1.2 %).

ABSTRACT

Changes in climate and the underlying surface are the main factors affecting runoff. Quantitative assessment of runoff characteristics, and determination of the climate and underlying surface contribution to changes in runoff are critical to water resources management and protection. Based on the runoff data from the Wulong Hydrological Station, combined with the Mann-Kendall test, Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA), Budyko hypothesis, and changes in climate and the underlying surface, this study comprehensively analyzed the runoff in the Wujiang River Basin (WRB). The results showed that: (1) The annual runoff of Wujiang River showed a downward trend, and an abrupt change occurred in 2005. (2) The overall hydrological change in WRB is 46%, reaching a moderate change. (3) The contribution rates of precipitation (P), potential evaporation (ET0), and underlying surface to runoff changes are 61.5%, 11.4%, and 26.9%, respectively. (4) After 2005, the WRB has become more arid, human activities have become more active, vegetation coverage has increased, and the built-up land has increased significantly.

ABSTRACT

Chaste (Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment) is an open source simulation package for the numerical solution of mathematical models arising in physiology and biology. To date, Chaste development has been driven primarily by applications that include continuum modelling of cardiac electrophysiology ('Cardiac Chaste'), discrete cell-based modelling of soft tissues ('Cell-based Chaste'), and modelling of ventilation in lungs ('Lung Chaste'). Cardiac Chaste addresses the need for a high-performance, generic, and verified simulation framework for cardiac electrophysiology that is freely available to the scientific community. Cardiac chaste provides a software package capable of realistic heart simulations that is efficient, rigorously tested, and runs on HPC platforms. Cell-based Chaste addresses the need for efficient and verified implementations of cell-based modelling frameworks, providing a set of extensible tools for simulating biological tissues. Computational modelling, along with live imaging techniques, plays an important role in understanding the processes of tissue growth and repair. A wide range of cell-based modelling frameworks have been developed that have each been successfully applied in a range of biological applications. Cell-based Chaste includes implementations of the cellular automaton model, the cellular Potts model, cell-centre models with cell representations as overlapping spheres or Voronoi tessellations, and the vertex model. Lung Chaste addresses the need for a novel, generic and efficient lung modelling software package that is both tested and verified. It aims to couple biophysically-detailed models of airway mechanics with organ-scale ventilation models in a package that is freely available to the scientific community. Chaste is designed to be modular and extensible, providing libraries for common scientific computing infrastructure such as linear algebra operations, finite element meshes, and ordinary and partial differential equation solvers. This infrastructure is used by libraries for specific applications, such as continuum mechanics, cardiac models, and cell-based models. The software engineering techniques used to develop Chaste are intended to ensure code quality, re-usability and reliability. Primary applications of the software include cardiac and respiratory physiology, cancer and developmental biology.
