ABSTRACT

AIM: This article aimed to review the association of oral microbiota with digestive cancer (DC). BACKGROUND: Oral microbiota is one of the most complex ecosystems in our body. The mouth, from which the digestive system starts, may be a source of an abundant taxonomic group of microbiotas that travel to the digestive system followed by growth, reproduction, and settlement, forming a complex microecological environment causing systemic and gastrointestinal (GI) disease. REVIEW RESULTS: A total of 14 articles were chosen for review. Most studies were case-control. Both positive and negative associations were seen between oral microbiome and DC. CONCLUSION: Digestive cancer may be associated with distinctive oral microbial character. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The present systematic review enlightens the risk of digestive carcinoma with oral microbiota that may act as a biomarker for early diagnosis of DC in a more comfortable, acceptable, and noninvasive way. ABSTRACT

The Cu (3 to 15 at%) is incorporated into ZnO thin film by atomic beam co-sputtering has been investigated for enhancement in room temperature ferromagnetism and green photo-luminance. These Cu-ZnO thin films examined with Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, Hall measurement, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetic hysteresis. Raman spectroscopy, XRD confirms wurtzite structure and improvement in the crystallinity of ZnO upto 7% Cu. Further increase in Cu concentration results in growth in Cu nanoparticles. On increasing Cu concentration, there is decrement in transparency and increase in band gap with increase in n-type carrier concentration as confirmed from UV-Visible and Hall measurement studies. Magnetic measurement exhibited unique feature of room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in undoped and doped sample upto 3% Cu. The enhancement in magnetic moment as well as green emission in photoluminescence response with increase in Cu doping indicates that generation of large defects in ZnO by Cu doping, which can be attributed to combined effect of the presence of oxygen vacancies and/or structural inhomogeneity as well as formation of bound magnetic polarons. Importantly, synthesised Cu doped ZnO thin films can be used as spin LEDs and switchable spin-laser diodes.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to see the enhancement in thermoelectric properties of bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) annealed at different temperatures (573 and 773 K) through silver (Ag) nano-inclusions (0, 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt %). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of Ag incorporated in Bi2Te3 annealed at 573 K shows tubular, pentagonal, trigonal, circular and hexagonal nanoparticles with sizes of 6-25 nm (for 5 wt % Ag ) and 7-30 nm (for 20 wt % Ag). Ag incorporated in Bi2Te3 annealed at 773 K shows mainly hexagonally shaped structures with particle sizes of 2-20 nm and 40-80 nm (for 5 wt % Ag) and 10-60 nm (for 20 wt % Ag). Interestingly, the samples annealed at 573 K show the highest Seebeck coefficient (S, also called thermopower) at room temperature (p-type behavior) for 5% Ag which is increased ca. five-fold in comparison to Ag-free Bi2Te3, whereas for samples with the same content (5% Ag) annealed at 773 K the increment in thermopower is only about three-fold with a 6.9-fold enhancement of the power factor (S 2σ). The effect of size and shape of the nanoparticles on thermoelectric properties can be understood on the basis of a carrier-filtering effect that results in an increase in thermopower along with a control over the reduction in electrical conductivity to maintain a high power factor yielding a high figure of merit.

ABSTRACT

Skutterudites are emerging as potential candidates that show high efficiency and thus provide an ideal platform for research. The properties of nanostructured films of skutterudites are different from those of the corresponding bulk. The present study reports the evolution of nanostructured single-phase CoSb3 fabricated by using low-energy ion irradiation of Co/Sb bilayer films and subsequent annealing at an optimized temperature and their Seebeck coefficients (S). The effects of ion beam parameters with annealing on the phase evolution and nanostructure modifications were studied. An increase in Xe+ ion fluence resulted in complete mixing of Co/Sb on postannealing forming flower-like nanostructures of single phase CoSb3. The temperature-dependent electrical resistivity (ρ) increases with the ion fluence because of defect creation which further increases on postannealing due to surface nanostructuring. The S of these films of CoSb3 is found to be higher and this is attributed to the formation of a uniform layer of nanostructured CoSb3 alloy thin film. The S and Hall coefficients of all these films are negative implying that they are n-type semiconductors.

ABSTRACT

An investigation was carried out to understand the phase evolution and study the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of Co-Sb alloys fabricated by two different approaches: (a) thermal annealing and (b) ion-beam mixing followed by post annealing. The as-deposited and 100 MeV Ag ion beam irradiated Co/Sb bilayer thin films were subjected to thermal annealing from 200 to 400 °C for 1 hour. The Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) results showed partial mixing for the thermally annealed films and complete mixing for the irradiated and post annealed films at 400 °C. The XRD and RAMAN measurements indicated the formation of Co-Sb alloy, with ∼70% concentration of CoSb3 phase in the irradiated post annealed sample at 400 °C. The band gaps of the annealed and post irradiated annealed Co-Sb alloys were determined using UV-visible spectroscopy. Electrical and thermoelectric power measurements were performed in the temperature range of 300-420 K. It was observed that the alloys formed by ion-beam induced mixing exhibited higher electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power than the as-deposited and thermally annealed Co/Sb bilayer thin films.
