ABSTRACT

Background: patients with congenital cardiopathies are the main group at risk for infective endocarditis (IE) in the pediatric population. Fungal etiology is responsible for 2%-4% of all IEs, and the Trichosporon genus is an increasingly prevalent cause of infections in human beings. Case presentation: We describe a 9-year-old male with multiple surgical procedures to correct congenital cardiopathy defects, including insertion of RV-PA conduit, who was admitted due to suspicion of pneumonia and needed a surgical approach after being diagnosed with a mycotic pseudoaneurysm in the right ventricle's outflow tract, with dilation of the RV-PA conduit. The conduit was removed and antifungal treatment was started with Voriconazole after the agent was identified (T. asahii), with satisfactory therapeutic response. Approximately 4 years later, the patient was readmitted, presenting with intermittent fever, associated with nocturnal diaphoresis, dry cough, anxiety and chest pain. Vegetations consistent with T. asahii were evidenced in the RV-PA conduit, and a surgical approach was once again necessary. Discussion: diagnostic methods and treatment of T. asahii endocarditis aren't yet standardized, and recurrent surgical approaches are needed due to the inefficacy of antifungal treatment.

ABSTRACT

Individuals prefer letter strings whose consonantal articulation spots move from the front of the mouth to the back (e.g., BAKA, inward) over those with a reversed consonant order (e.g., KABA, outward), the so-called in-out effect. The present research explores whether individuals hold an internal standard or scheme of consonant order that triggers this effect. If this were the case, the in-out effect should already occur in one-trial between-subjects designs. If not, the in-out effect should emerge over the course of trials in within-subjects designs. In Experiments 1a-e (1b-e preregistered; total N = 2973; German, English, and Portuguese samples) employing a one-trial between-subjects design, no in-out effect was found. In Experiment 2 (N = 253), employing within-subjects designs with either 1, 5, 10, 30, or 50 trials per consonant order category (inward vs. outward), the in-out effect was absent in the first trial, but already surfaced for the first 2 trials, reached significance within the first 10 trials and a solid plateau within the first 20 trials. Of the four theoretical explanations, the present evidence favors the fluency/frequency and letter-position accounts and is at odds with the eating-related embodiment and easy-first accounts.

ABSTRACT

Research on the Spatial Quantity Association of Response Codes (SQUARC) has documented associations between spatial position and mental representations of quantity. Large quantities are associated with right and top, small quantities are associated with left and bottom. Resulting compatibility effects have largely been documented for response speed and judgment accuracy. Recently, employing luminance as quantity, Löffler et al. (2022) generalised such SQUARC compatibility effects to affective judgments, showing that horizontally SQUARC-compatible stimulus arrangements (i.e. bright on the right, dark on the left side) are liked more than SQUARC-incompatible arrangements. The present Experiment 1 (N = 296) replicated this horizontal compatibility effect, dz = .18, and generalised it to vertical luminance SQUARC compatibility (i.e. bright on the top, dark on the bottom), dz = .22. Experiments 2a-b (total N = 259; Experiment 2b preregistered) employed stimulus arrangements tilted by 45° to manipulate horizontal and vertical (in)compatibility simultaneously within the same stimulus, finding robust horizontal compatibility effects, but mixed evidence regarding vertical compatibility.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To approach the content in the literature regarding the vulnerability of rural workers in times ofthe COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This qualitative analysis was developed as an integrative review carried outin May 2020, based on the following research question: "How vulnerable are rural workers in times ofthe pandemic?". We searched the databases ofthe Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Results: We found 129 articles, but only eight were relevant to the study. Family farming, along with fishing, was one ofthe most affected sectors by social distancing. Conclusion: Social distancing is an indispensable public health measure. However, it affects the health determinants and conditioning factors related to small-scale farmers, fishers, and shellfishers, as their family income is drastically reduced or altogether lost. Therefore, there is a need for public policies to aid this population.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Localized fat is a matter of great concern among individuals from today's society. Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive technique that have shown great results in reducing localized fat. AIMS: To analyze the efficacy of cryoplipolysis on visible local fat reduction in submental region, arms, or male breast (pseudogynecomastia) in Brazilian subjects, and to assess possible factors associated with treatment success. METHODS: Single-arm, nonrandomized trial, with volunteers from both genders with visible excess fat in the arms or submental region or men presenting pseudogynecomastia. Eligible subjects were submitted to physical, photographic, and ultrasound analysis before and three months after intervention. A single cryolipolysis session was performed using specific methods for each region, followed by a local massage for two minutes. Data were described as measures of central tendency and dispersion and measures of frequency. Reduction in measurements and factors associated with treatment success was analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. RESULTS: Thirty-six subjects underwent one session of cryolipolysis in each area (22 subjects treated the arms, 20 the submental region and 9 the breast). In general, a mean reduction of 19.1% was observed. Significant differences were observed for almost all body parts analyzed. Body mass index was the only variable showing a significant relationship with intervention results. CONCLUSIONS: Cryolipolysis is a useful noninvasive tool in reduction of visible localized fat in arms and submental region and of pseudogynecomastia. Obese subjects are not benefited by the treatment.
