ABSTRACT

The pituitary responsiveness to luteinising hormone releasing hormone (LRH) was studied in 68 women aged between 15 and 30 years. The patients suffered from primary and secondary amenorrhoea or anovulatory cycles in combination with hirsutism, primary sterility, oligo-amenorrhoea, adrenogenital syndrome, and nervous anorexia. Eleven women without any discernible endocrinological disorders were used as controls. Double stimulation was performed by two intravenous injections of 25 microgram LRH each, spaced by one two-hour interval. Blood samples were taken repeatedly prior to, between, and after the injections at intervals set beforehand. Luteinising hormone (LH) plasma concentrations were determined by radio-immuno-assay. The mean difference between the two basic values measured ten and five minutes before LRH application was as low as 20.1 per cent. In most cases, the maximum values occurred 30 minutes after both injections. A positive correlation (r = 0.91, p < 0.001) was found to exist between the level recordable 30 minutes after the first injection and the integral of all values included. Dependence of response to LRH application on the height of the basic values was more strongly pronounced than that on the underlying category of disease. The LRH test, perhaps, may be indicated in cases of low basic LH values (< 2 ng/ml) to verify suspicion of a hypogonadotrophic situation. Simplification of the test procedure to only one withdrawal of blood each immediately before and 30 minutes after LRH injection seems to be justified.

ABSTRACT

The dexamethasone-hcg-test was administered to 34 hospitalized patients, aged 17 to 45, who were suffering from hirsutism in order to reveal the source of their androgen levels, which in most cases were elevated. In addition to the usual estimation of urinary 17-ketosteroids and urinary 17-OH-corticosteroids plasma 17-beta-hidroxiandrogens and androstendione were measured by RIA. The results of the tests varied to a high degree and could not be related to the clinical findings. The authors conclude that administration of dexamethasone-hcg-test is of small value in detecting the source of hirsutism.

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of histograms of normal cervical and vaginal smears, produced by ""rapid flow through'' cytophotometry. Normal cytological cervical and vaginal smears were examined for their appearance in histograms in order to find criteria for the classification of ""normal non-pathological'' cytological slides. Simultaneously, the reliability of the standardized method for preparation of vaginal and cervical smears was checked. The diagrams and data produced by the histograph were also coded on line and analyzed by a computer; thus obtaining an objective mathematical analysis and avoiding errors due to subjective visual analysis of the histograms. The objective interpretation of histograms of normal vaginal smears is an important step to the realisation of automatic pre-screening.

ABSTRACT

Amniotic fluid of normal pregnancies and of pregnancies complicated with light to moderate EPH-toxaemias was investigated for oestrogens. No differences were found between normal and toxaemic pregnancies. Oestrogens increased significantly with proceeding gestational age. When amniotic fluid of normal pregnancies was analyzed for oestrogens and cortisol a significant correlation between the two hormones could be demonstrated. This is interpreted as an expression of the metabolic activity of the fetal adrenal cortex.

ABSTRACT

Vaginal smears of young girls before puberty and of postmenopausal women who were treated with digoxine, were examined on their degree of proliferation. There was no sign of any estrogenic stimulation. In female juvenile and ovarectomized fertile rats digitoxin caused no ripening of the vaginal epithelium neither in low nor in high doses. It is supposed that some steroid-hormone-like effects which are seen by glycoside-therapy, are related to stimulation of the suprarenal gland.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of eclampsia in the last two decades in the women's hospital of the University of Goettingen was evaluated. In a total of 32,578 birth there was an incidence of 0.11%. Maternal mortality was 16.2%, perinatal mortality 19.5%. 73% of the patients were primiparae, 24.3% unmarried pregnant women. A regression of the frequency of eclampsia is seen within the last 20 years and certainly due to the intensive antenatal care.

ABSTRACT

The influence of clomiphene, LH and LH-RH on vaginal cycle and ovarian function in mature rats, which had been exposed to continuous light in order to block the cyclic sexual centre, was examined by different doses. While ovulation was obtained by administration of LH and LH-RH, clomiphene showed no effect. It may be assumed that the central mode of action of the "ovulation inducing effect" of clomiphene is mediated by stimulation of the cyclic sexual centre in the anterior hypothalamus.
