ABSTRACT

We detected malaria vector Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes in the Al Hudaydah governorate in Yemen by using DNA sequencing. We report 2 cytochrome c oxidase subunit I haplotypes, 1 previously found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, and Yemen. These findings provide insight into invasive An. stephensi mosquitoes in Yemen and their connection to East Africa.

ABSTRACT

Poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as a new generation of intelligent conductive polymers, is attracting much attention in the field of tissue engineering. However, its water dispersibility, conductivity, and biocompatibility are incompatible, which limit its further development. In this work, biocompatible electrode material of PEDOT doped with sodium sulfonated alginate (SS) which contains two functional groups of sulfonic acid and carboxylic acid per repeat unit of the macromolecule. The as dual-site doping strategy simultaneously boosts anticoagulant and electrochemical performances, for example, good hydrophilicity (water contact angle of 59.40°), well dispersibility (dispersion solution unstratified in 30 days), high conductivity (4.45 S m-1), and enhanced anticoagulant property (extended activated partial thrombin time value of 59.0 s), forming an adjustable PEDOT: biomacromolecule interface; this fills the technical gap of implantable bioelectronics in terms of coagulation and thrombosis risk. At the same time, the assembled all-in-one supercapacitor with anticoagulant properties is prepared by PEDOT: sodium sulfonated alginate as electrode material and sodium alginate hydrogel as electrolyte layer. The dual-site doping strategy provides a new opinion for the design and optimization of functional conductive polymers and its applications in implantable energy storage fields.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Root canal treatment procedures require a thorough understanding of root and canal anatomy. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the morphological differences of teeth root and their canals assessed using cone-beam computed and micro-computed tomography in Saudi Arabian population. METHODOLOGY: An electronic search was conducted in PubMed / Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases until January 2023 to retrieve related studies. "Root canal morphology," "Saudi Arabia," "Micro-CT," and "cone-beam computed tomography" were used as keywords. A modified version of previously published risk of bias assessment tool was used to determine the quality assessment of included studies. RESULTS: The literature search revealed 47 studies that matched the criteria for inclusion, out of which 44 studies used cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and three were micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) studies. According to the modified version of risk of bias assessment tool, the studies were categorized as low, moderate, and high risk of bias. A total of 47,612 samples were included which comprised of either maxillary teeth (5,412), or mandibular teeth (20,572), and mixed teeth (21,327). 265 samples were used in micro-CT studies while 47,347 teeth samples were used in CBCT studies. Among the CBCT studies, except for three, all the studies were retrospective studies. Frequently used imaging machine and software were 3D Accuitomo 170 and Morita's i-Dixel 3D imaging software respectively. Minimum and maximum voxel sizes were 75 and 300 µm, Vertucci's classification was mostly used to classify the root canal morphology of the teeth. The included micro-CT studies were in-vitro studies where SkyScan 1172 X-ray scanner was the imaging machine with pixel size ranging between 13.4 and 27.4 µm. Vertucci, Ahmed et al. and Pomeranz et al. classifications were applied to classify the root canal morphology. CONCLUSION: This systematic review revealed wide variations in root and canal morphology of Saudi population using high resolution imaging techniques. Clinicians should be aware of the common and unusual root and canal anatomy before commencing root canal treatment. Future micro-CT studies are needed to provide additional qualitative and quantitative data presentations.

ABSTRACT

Despite great advances in diagnostic and treatment options for cancer, like chemotherapy surgery, and radiation therapy it continues to remain a major global health concern. Further research is necessary to find new biomarkers and possible treatment methods for cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), tiny non-coding RNAs found naturally in the body, can influence the activity of several target genes. These genes are often disturbed in diseases like cancer, which perturbs functions like differentiation, cell division, cell cycle, apoptosis and proliferation. MiR-146a is a commonly and widely used miRNA that is often overexpressed in malignant tumors. The expression of miR-146a has been correlated with many pathological and physiological changes in cancer cells, such as the regulation of various cell death paths. It's been established that the control of cell death pathways has a huge influence on cancer progression. To improve our understanding of the interrelationship between miRNAs and cancer cell apoptosis, it's necessary to explore the impact of miRNAs through the alteration in their expression levels. Research has demonstrated that the appearance and spread of cancer can be mitigated by moderating the expression of certain miRNA - a commencement of treatment that presents a hopeful approach in managing cancer. Consequently, it is essential to explore the implications of miR-146a with respect to inducing different forms of tumor cell death, and evaluate its potential to serve as a target for improved chemotherapy outcomes. Through this review, we provide an outline of miR-146a's biogenesis and function, as well as its significant involvement in apoptosis. As well, we investigate the effects of exosomal miR-146a on the promotion of apoptosis in cancer cells and look into how it could possibly help combat chemotherapeutic resistance.

ABSTRACT

According to a paper released and submitted to WHO by IARC scientists, there would be 905,700 new cases of liver cancer diagnosed globally in 2020, with 830,200 deaths expected as a direct result. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis D virus (HDV) all play critical roles in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), despite the rising prevalence of HCC due to non-infectious causes. Liver cirrhosis and HCC are devastating consequences of HBV and HCV infections, which are widespread worldwide. Associated with a high mortality rate, these infections cause about 1.3 million deaths annually and are the primary cause of HCC globally. In addition to causing insertional mutations due to viral gene integration, epigenetic alterations and inducing chronic immunological dysfunction are all methods by which these viruses turn hepatocytes into cancerous ones. While expanding our knowledge of the illness, identifying these pathways also give possibilities for novel diagnostic and treatment methods. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) activation is gaining popularity as a treatment option for oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and metabolic abnormalities. Numerous studies have shown that elevated Nrf2 expression is linked to HCC, providing more evidence that Nrf2 is a critical factor in HCC. This aberrant Nrf2 signaling drives cell proliferation, initiates angiogenesis and invasion, and imparts drug resistance. As a result, this master regulator may be a promising treatment target for HCC. In addition, the activation of Nrf2 is a common viral effect that contributes to the pathogenesis, development, and chronicity of virus infection. However, certain viruses suppress Nrf2 activity, which is helpful to the virus in maintaining cellular homeostasis. In this paper, we discussed the influence of Nrf2 deregulation on the viral life cycle and the pathogenesis associated with HBV and HCV. We summed up the mechanisms for the modulation of Nrf2 that are deregulated by these viruses. Moreover, we describe the molecular mechanism by which Nrf2 is modulated in liver cancer, liver cancer stem cells (LCSCs), and liver cancer caused by HBV and HCV. Video Abstract.

Virtual reality is an immersive technology that can be used as a tool in the treatment of disorders linked to substance use disorders, such as alcohol use disorder. This systematic review of the literature examines the effectiveness of virtual reality as exposure therapy for heavy social drinkers, defined as people who regularly consume alcohol in a variety of social contexts, with or without a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder. The current review includes ten studies with a total of 377 participants. Most participants were adult men (61.03%), with an age average of 44.1 years [± 7.42] and alcohol use ranging from light to heavy. Although studies show heterogeneous results, the use of virtual reality cue exposure therapies has shown greater improvement in terms of craving reduction for patients suffering from alcohol use disorder. Studies have also shown that the realism of the virtual environment can influence levels of craving and anxiety, both in heavy social drinkers. In addition, the use of virtual reality has proven to increase feeling of self-efficacy and decrease the tendency to engage in automatic drinking behaviors. However, the review also mentions the necessity of larger research to determine the efficiency of virtual reality as a therapeutic treatment for alcohol use disorder, whilst considering comorbidities and treatment background, especially for resistant patients.

INTRODUCTION: Utilized in the healthcare sector, social media offers numerous benefits. However, its drawbacks encompass the variable quality of unregulated and unsupervised content. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the information in content related to chest pain found across Instagram and analyze the quality and reliability of chest pain-related content via Instagram posts. METHODOLOGY: Instagram posts with content related to chest pain were analyzed with the help of a structured questionnaire that included the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and DISCERN score (DS). To collect Instagram posts, several distinct hashtags were employed: #chestpain, #chestpains, #angina, #anginatreatment, #heartattack, #heartattacksurvivor, #heartattackprevention. RESULTS: A total of 262 posts were included, of which 29.7% of the total posts (n=78) contained information that describes the etiology of the disease. 27.8% of the total posts (n = 73) enclosed promotional content. Posts were found to be uploaded by doctors (18.7%), hospitals (15.6%), patients (17.9%), dieticians (11.1%), healthcare organizations (9.2%), and others (27.5%). Both Global Quality and DISCERN scores were statistically significant with a p-value of 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study revealed that most of the Instagram content on chest pain posted via physicians were highly reliable and had a better global quality score. Information regarding various causes, symptoms and preventive measures on Instagram can be considered as an acceptable source for patients to surf on. A major limitation is that only English content was analyzed. In the future, the use of higher quality posts produced by healthcare professionals could potentially contribute to enhancing patient education via Instagram.

OBJECTIVES: Publication is one of the crucial parameters in research, and the inability to publish has been noted in many medical students' projects due to different reasons. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the obstacles that prevented medical students in a health science university from publishing their research from 2018 to 2021. First, an online survey was distributed to assess the obstacles to publication perceived by the medical students. Second, a total of 81 research projects were evaluated by scientific reviewers and their final decision about the publication was recorded. RESULTS: In total, 162 students filled out the survey. The barriers faced by the students were various. They included an unsupportive research supervisor, a lack of time, an insufficient sample size, and many others. In the reviewer's evaluation, out of 81 projects, 70 projects (86.4%) were recommended to be published after minor or major modifications, while 11 projects (13.6%) were rejected due to poor writing style, poor results interpretation, and incorrect methodology. CONCLUSION: Articulating the barriers to undergraduate medical research publication is important in boosting publication rates and research experience of graduating medical students. Medical research educators and research supervisors should strongly consider creating a framework that tackles existing obstacles and any future matters.

ABSTRACT

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) have received considerable attention over the past 10 years due to their environmental prevalence and potential toxic effects. With the increase in global plastic production and disposal, MNP pollution has become a topic of emerging concern. In this review, we describe MNPs in the atmospheric environment, and potential toxicological effects of exposure to MNPs. Studies have reported the occurrence of MNPs in outdoor and indoor air at concentrations ranging from 0.0065 items m-3 to 1583 items m-3. Findings have identified plastic fragments, fibers, and films in sizes predominantly <1000 µm with polyamide (PA), polyester (PES), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), rayon, polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) as the major compounds. Exposure through indoor air and dust is an important pathway for humans. Airborne MNPs pose health risks to plants, animals, and humans. Atmospheric MNPs can enter organism bodies via inhalation and subsequent deposition in the lungs, which triggers inflammation and other adverse health effects. MNPs could be eliminated through source reduction, policy/regulation, environmental awareness and education, biodegradable materials, bioremediation, and efficient air-filtration systems. To achieve a sustainable society, it is crucial to implement effective strategies for reducing the usage of single-use plastics (SUPs). Further, governments play a pivotal role in addressing the pressing issue of MNPs pollution and must establish viable solutions to tackle this significant challenge.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization recommends regular monitoring of the efficacy of nationally recommended antimalarial drugs. We present the results of studies on the efficacy of recommended antimalarials and molecular markers of artemisinin and partner resistance in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. METHODS: Single-arm prospective studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of artesunate-sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (ASSP) in Afghanistan and Pakistan, artemether-lumefantrine (AL) in all countries, or dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) in Sudan for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum. The efficacy of chloroquine (CQ) and AL for the treatment of Plasmodium vivax was evaluated in Afghanistan and Somalia, respectively. Patients were treated and monitored for 28 (CQ, ASSP and AL) or 42 (DP) days. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-corrected cure rate and parasite positivity rate at Day 3 were estimated. Mutations in the P. falciparum kelch 13 (Pfk13) gene and amplifications of plasmepsin (Pfpm2) and multidrug resistance-1 (Pfmdr-1) genes were also studied. RESULTS: A total of 1680 (249 for ASSP, 1079 for AL and 352 for DP) falciparum cases were successfully assessed. A PCR-adjusted ASSP cure rate of 100% was observed in Afghanistan and Pakistan. For AL, the cure rate was 100% in all but four sites in Sudan, where cure rates ranged from 92.1% to 98.8%. All but one patient were parasite-free at Day 3. For P. vivax, cure rates were 98.2% for CQ and 100% for AL. None of the samples from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen had a Pfk13 mutation known to be associated with artemisinin resistance. In Sudan, the validated Pfk13 R622I mutation accounted for 53.8% (14/26) of the detected non-synonymous Pfk13 mutations, most of which were repeatedly detected in Gadaref. A prevalence of 2.7% and 9.3% of Pfmdr1 amplification was observed in Pakistan and Yemen, respectively. CONCLUSION: High efficacy of ASSP, AL and DP in the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum infection and of CQ and AL in the treatment of P. vivax was observed in the respective countries. The repeated detection of a relatively high rate of Pfk13 R622I mutation in Sudan underscores the need for close monitoring of the efficacy of recommended ACTs, parasite clearance rates and Pfk13 mutations in Sudan and beyond. ABSTRACT

This study explored the potential for predicting the quantities of microplastics (MPs) from easily measurable parameters in peatland sediment samples. We first applied correlation and Bayesian network analysis to examine the associations between physicochemical variables and the number of MPs measured from three districts of the Long An province in Vietnam. Further, we trained and tested three machine learning models, namely Least-Square Support Vector Machines (LS-SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to predict the composite quantities of MPs using physicochemical parameters and sediment characteristics as predictors. The results indicate that the quantity of MPs and characteristics such as color and shape in the samples were mostly influenced by pH, TOC, and salinity. All three predictive models demonstrated considerable accuracies when applied to the testing dataset. This study lays the groundwork for using basic physicochemical variables to predict MP pollution in peatland sediments and potentially locations and environments.

ABSTRACT

In the entire world, prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common and deadly cancers. Treatment failure is still common among patients, despite PCa diagnosis and treatment improvements. Inadequate early diagnostic markers and the emergence of resistance to conventional therapeutic approaches, particularly androgen-deprivation therapy, are the causes of this. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), as an essential group of regulatory molecules, have been reported to be dysregulated through prostate tumorigenesis and hold great promise as diagnostic targets. Besides, lncRNAs regulate the malignant features of PCa cells, such as proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance. These multifunctional RNA molecules interact with other molecular effectors like miRNAs and transcription factors to modulate various signaling pathways, including AR signaling. This study aimed to compile new knowledge regarding the role of lncRNA through prostate tumorigenesis in terms of their effects on the various malignant characteristics of PCa cells; in light of these characteristics and the significant potential of lncRNAs as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for PCa. ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: The inhibitory effect of asparagine (Asn) and its derivatives on iron (Fe) corrosion was studied by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this paper, the global and local reactivity descriptors of Asn in the protonated and neutral forms were evaluated. Also, the changes in reactivity were investigated when dipeptides were combined with Asn. Due to the increase in the reaction centers within their molecular structure, there was an enhancement in the inhibitory effect of these dipeptides. Moreover, the adsorption energies (Eads) and the adsorption configurations of Asn and small peptides (SPs) with most stability were determined on the surface of Fe(111). It was found that dipeptides had a chemical adsorption on these substrates. In the protonated forms, there was an enhancement in the absolute values of Eads between the inhibitors and the Fe(111) surfaces. Peptides were more likely to be adsorbed on the Fe surfaces, showing the great inhibitory effect of these moieties. The results of the current research demonstrate the possibility of utilizing SPs as efficient "green" corrosion inhibitors. METHODS: DFT computations were undertaken by employing the BIOVIA Material Studio with B3LYP-D3 functional and 6-31 + G* basis set. The theoretical evaluation of the inhibitory effect of asparagine (Asn) dipeptides, and the potential analysis of small peptides to protect against the corrosion of Fe, was done.

Diagnostically, vertical root fractures (VRFs) can be a frustrating experience for the dentist. Misdiagnosis could result in significant time and effort losses involved in erroneously intervening endodontically and/or periodontally. Certainly, diagnosing VRFs is often very difficult, and diagnoses based on speculations have led to the extraction of many salvageable teeth. This study was conducted in the radiology unit of College of Dentistry, Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, between December 2021 and June 2022 to evaluate the ability to detect VRFs following the use of a novel radio-opaque dye using periapical radiographs (PARs) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). After carefully inducing VRFs on extracted, single-rooted, virgin premolars (n = 26), they were assigned to control (n = 2) and experimental groups (n = 24). The fracture site of the tooth in the control group received methylene blue dye, whereas the experimental group received a novel dye. Two differently angled PARs were obtained for all the teeth, followed by a CBCT image. Three blinded investigators participated in scoring a Likert scale form with a set of questions. Inter-/intra-examiner reliability showed excellent consistency using Cronbach's alpha test. The Z-test revealed CBCT and PAR to be equally adept at detecting VRFs, with the mean values showing no statistically significant differences. The extent of the VRFs and dye penetration were significantly better when angled radiographs and axial view CBCT were evaluated. Within the limitations of this study, the dye tested showed promising initial results as an aid in radiographically detecting VRFs. The use of such minimally invasive methods is critically needed for diagnosing and managing VRFs. However, further testing should be performed prior to its clinical use.

To evaluate the mean distance and differences between posterior maxillary teeth and maxillary sinus floor (MSF) concerning the age and gender of the patients, a total of 124 maxillary sinuses and 496 posterior maxillary teeth were randomly selected in 62 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Mean distances between posterior maxillary roots (PMRs) from different teeth and the MSF were measured using a calibrated tool in the software. Other relations regarding the gender and age of the patients were determined. The mean root-MSF distances in the right and left first premolars were more significant compared to the second premolars. No significant relation was found between the apices of the right and left first and second molar roots and the floor of the maxillary sinus concerning gender. A statistically significant relation was found between the apices of the buccal root of the right first premolar, right and left first and second molars and floor of the maxillary sinus concerning the age group 21-40 years (p-value = 0.009). This study showed that the second molar mesiobuccal root apex is frequently related to the sinus floor. Differences were reported concerning age, concerning the distance between posterior maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus floor. CBCT technology helped provide the clinical proximity between the MSF and the posterior teeth root apices during the treatment planning.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore whether coil embolization of penile collateral arteries to prevent nontarget embolization during prostatic artery embolization (PAE) negatively affects erectile function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on a prospectively maintained multicenter PAE database on all patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (January 2014 to July 2016). International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores were collected at baseline and within 12 months after the procedure. A logistic regression and nearest neighbor propensity-matched analysis (matched for age, baseline IIEF-5 scores, and use of 5α-reductase inhibitors) and paired t test were used to evaluate for differential impact on IIEF-5 scores between the group of patients who underwent (unilateral) penile collateral coil embolization and a matched control group of patients who did not. RESULTS: Of a total of 216 patients, 26 underwent coil protection of an accessory pudendal vessel/penile collateral. After exclusions, 22 propensity-matched pairs were identified. The mean IIEF-5 score at baseline for the coil-embolized group was 14.8 ± 8.3 (out of a possible score of 30) and that for the matched control group was 14.0 ± 7.8. At the 12-month follow-up after the procedure, the mean follow-up IIEF-5 score was 15.5 ± 8.0 for the coil-embolized group and 14.2 ± 8.2 for the matched control group. The change in IIEF-5 scores after PAE was not significantly different between the 2 groups (0.66 ± 3.8 vs 0.20 ± 2.0; P = .64; 95% CI, -1.53 to 2.44). CONCLUSIONS: When penile collateral arteries were identified, protective coil embolization of penile collateral/accessory pudendal vessels during PAE was unlikely to affect erectile function negatively.

ABSTRACT

Background The European Association of Urology (EAU) recommends that the operative steps and documentation necessary for successful and appropriate management of bladder cancer include identifying factors necessary to assign disease risk stratification, clinical stage, adequacy of resection and the presence of complications and immediate intravesical chemotherapy administration. Aim To assess and improve the adequacy of current transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) documentation at a district general hospital in the UK against the EAU 2022 guidelines. Methods Operative notes over a one-year period were assessed for the inclusion of key steps to achieve a comprehensive TURBT as outlined by EAU guidelines. Outcomes included documentation on the details of the operative findings and intervention as well as the perioperative assessment. A standardised template for TURBT procedures was created and surgical staff received training on its usage. The audit was subsequently repeated after six months to assess for improvements. Results TURBT documentation of 78 cases in the first cycle was compared to 37 cases from the second cycle. Significant improvements in the documentation of tumour size (46% to 89%; p<0.05), tumour description (59% to 89%; p <0.05), depth of resection (36% to 89%; p<0.05), administration of chemotherapy (21% to 46%; p<0.05) and assessment for perforation (22% to 68%; p=0.001) were demonstrated. Improvements in pre-operative and post-operative examination rates under anaesthesia also achieved statistical significance (47% & 14% respectively to 89%; p<0.05). There was an increase in the documentation of completeness of resection but this did not achieve statistical significance (59% to 68%; p=0.42). Conclusion The operative note template led to the improvement in the documentation, improving the risk stratification of bladder cancer in patients undergoing TURBT. The use of procedure-specific operative note templates should be adopted for all commonly performed procedures to improve the completeness of documentation.

ABSTRACT

The novel Ag0/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles was simply synthesized via chemical method. Ag/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles was characterized by FESEM image, XRD curve, UV-vis spectroscopy, BET analysis, and XPS spectrum. XRD pattern depicts that the cubic crystalline phase of particles. The band gap of Ag/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles was achieved to 2.04 eV, which that depicted the best activity under visible light irradiation. Ag/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles exhibits 99.74% degradation under light and persulfate ion which was higher response than Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles (83.56%) under this condition. The scavenging test indicates the important reactive species in removal process were •OH, and •SO4-. The Ag/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles was indicated highly photo-stability for the MG degradation after 5th cycle. Ag/Cu2MoO4 exhibits substantial antibacterial properties against P. aeruginosa and S. pneumoniae. Moreover, Ag/Cu2MoO4 nanoparticles was experimented to peroxidase-like performance for the colorimetric detection of glucose with the Limit of Detection about 52.23 nM.

ABSTRACT

Microplastic pollution is becoming a global challenge due to its long-term accumulation in the environment, causing adverse effects on human health and the ecosystem. Sludge discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) plays a critical role as a carrier and primary source of environmental microplastic contamination. A significantly average microplastic variation between 1000 and 301,400 particles kg-1 has been reported in the sludge samples. In recent years, advanced technologies have been successfully applied to address this issue, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and membrane bioreactors (MBRs). Adsorption technologies are essential to utilizing novel adsorbents (e.g., biochar, graphene, zeolites) for effectively removing MPs. Especially, the removal efficiency of polymer microspheres from an aqueous solution by Mg/Zn modified magnetic biochars (Mg/Zn-MBC) was obtained at more than 95%. Also, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely applied to degrade microplastic contaminants, in which photocatalytic by semiconductors (e.g., TiO2 and ZnO) is a highly suitable approach to promote the degradation reactions owing to strongly hydroxyl radicals (OH*). Biological degradation-aided microorganisms (e.g., bacterial and fungal strains) have been reported to be suitable for removing microplastics. Yet, it was affected by biotic and abiotic factors of the environmental conditions (e.g., pH, light, temperature, moisture, bio-surfactants, microorganisms, enzymes) as well as their polymer characteristics, i.e., molecular weight, functional groups, and crystallinity. Notably, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) showed the highest efficiency in removing up to 99% microplastic particles and minimizing their contamination in sewage sludge. Further, MBRs illustrate the suitability for treating high-strength compounds, e.g., polymer debris and microplastic fibers from complex industrial wastewater. Finally, this study provided a comprehensive understanding of potential adverse risks, transportation pathways, and removal mechanisms of microplastic, which full-filled the knowledge gaps in this field.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim was to assess the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjunct to mechanical instrumentation (MI) in reducing Enterococcus faecalis (E faecalis) and Candida albicans (C albicans) counts from C-shaped root-canals. METHODS: Teeth with C-shaped canals as identified on cone beam computed tomographic images were included. Following incubation with E faecalis and C albicans, samples were divided into 4 groups a four follows: Group-1: MI with adjunct aPDT; Group-2: aPDT alone; Group-3: MI alone; and Group-4: no treatment. The pulp chambers of these teeth were exposed and coronal pulp was mechanically derided using sterile endodontic excavators. Using flexible files, all canals were debrided up to size #30 K-files with intermittent irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite irrigation. In Groups 1 and 3, methylene-blue was injected in all canals and aPDT was performed using a 600 nm diode laser. Sample-size estimation was done on data from a pilot investigation and group-comparisons were done using one way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc adjustment tests. P < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Sixty periodontally hopeless mandibular second molars with C-shaped canals were included. There was a statistically significant reduction CFU/mL of E faecalis (P < .001) and C albicans (P < .001). At post-operative microbial assessments in Group-1. There was no difference CFU/mL of E faecalis and C albicans at post-operative microbial assessments in Groups 2-4. CONCLUSION: MI with adjunct aPDT is more effective in reducing count of E faecalis and C albicans from C-shaped root canals.
