ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of dietary nucleotides-supplementation on broiler chickens to alleviate the intestinal Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) levels and its adverse effect on gut and growth performance parameters. In this study, a total of 270 one-day-old mixed broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were randomly divided into six treatment groups with three replicates of 15 chicks/ replicate. Treatment 1 (CX), a negative control group was fed corn-soybean basal diet without added nucleotides. Treatment 2 (CN 0.05) and treatment 3 (CN 0.1), consisted of chicks were fed the basal diet with the addition of nucleotides on top at two levels (0.05 and 0.1%) respectively. Treatment 4 (PX), treatment 5 (PN 0.05), and treatment 6 (PN 0.1) consisted of chicks that were challenged with C. perfringens inoculum (~4 × 108 CFU/ml) on day 14, 15, 16 and 17of the experiment and were fed diets similar to treatments 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The trial continued for 35 days. At the end of the experiment, the intestinal C. perfringens counts, microscopic lesion scores, intestinal histomorphology, intestinal barriers (occludin and mucin mRNA expression) and growth parameters were determined. The results showed that the pathogen challenge significantly (P˂0.05) increased both C. perfringens levels and intestinal lesion scores. Which adversely affects intestinal barriers and intestinal histomorphology resulting in a significant decrease (P˂0.05) in body weight gain (BWG) with an increase in feed conversion ratio (FCR). Whereas, nucleotides-supplementation, at 0.1%, significantly decreased both C. perfringens levels and intestinal lesion scores, and significantly improved intestinal barriers and intestinal histomorphology which consequently resulted in improved growth performance parameters to be nearly the same as that of the control un-supplemented group. In conclusion, nucleotides markedly ameliorated the negative effects of C. perfringens challenge by improving the intestinal barrier function and intestinal histomorphology which positively reflected on the growth performance of challenged birds.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study examined the impact of dietary fortification with rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and/or basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaves powder on glycemic status of dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five Rottweiler dogs were assigned to five experimental groups and fed an experimentally processed extruded basal diet that was either fortified or not fortified. G1 was fed the basal diet without any fortification (negative control); G2 was consumed the basal diet supplemented with a commercially available synthetic palatant (positive control); G3 was provided with rosemary fortified (at 0.05%) basal diet; G4 was provided with a basil fortified (at 0.05%) basal diet; and G5 was offered a rosemary and basil fortified (each at 0.025%) basal diet. RESULTS: G4 and G5 exhibited a positive impact on growth performance traits. Dogs in G3, G4, and G5 showed significant decreases in serum glucose levels in comparison to dogs of the control groups (G1 and G2). It was clear that the inclusion level of 0.05% of basil leaves powder showed the greatest hypoglycemic action. Indeed, G4 dogs showed a reduction in blood glucose at a percentage of approximately 31% followed by G5 and G3 groups (16.25% and 14%, respectively). Furthermore, basil leaves inhibited the amylase enzyme activity. Both insulin and cortisol levels in G4 dogs were increased and reduced compared to controls, respectively. In addition, dietary fortification with rosemary and/or basil significantly increased glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels, while values for malondialdehyde and lactate dehydrogenase were decreased. CONCLUSION: It could be concluded that dietary fortification of dog diet with rosemary and/or basil leaves powder at 0.05% separately or 0.025% in combination might be used as promising modulators of blood glucose levels as well as clinico-nutritional management tools for the prevention and control of diabetes mellitus in dogs.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The current study aimed to compare the impact of heat stress (HS) on some physiological functions and blood oxidative stress biomarkers between dry dairy crossbred (Balady X Friesian) cows and buffaloes during Egyptian summer season (July-September). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 26 healthy animals were equally used in the in the current study. The criterion for cows and buffaloes selection and the management conditions were similar. A total mixed ration to meet the animal's requirements was used, and dry matter intake (DMI) was calculated. Ambient temperature, relative humidity, temperature humidity index (THI), respiratory rate, and rectal temperature (RT) were daily recorded. Meanwhile, live body weight and body condition score were weekly recorded. Blood samples were collected bi-weekly, and plasma samples were harvested for malondialdehyde (MDA) content and enzymatic antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities determinations throughout the experimental period (8 weeks - prepartum). RESULTS: The results confirmed, the HS condition, as the THI values ranged from 79.74 to 90.4 throughout the experimental period. In both species, HS increased RT and decreased DMI (<10.5 kg/day and 9.5 kg/day in cows and buffaloes, respectively). Buffaloes seemed to be more affected by the hostile environmental condition of this study compared with their respective cows. Buffaloes had recorded up to 1 °C increase in their RTs in most of the point's period compared to cows. There was a continuous increase in MDA values (194.7 and 208.4 nmol/gHb in buffaloes and cows, respectively, 2 weeks prepartum) as the animals come close to parturition with moderate decrements for the enzymatic antioxidant activities in both cows and buffaloes. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that during Egyptian's summer season, HS had adversely affected feed intake and consequently animal's production performances.
