ABSTRACT

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is the most common chronic autoimmune disease of the peripheral nervous system. It is often difficult to diagnose, but severaly therapeutic options are nowadays available to reduce neurological deficits and to improve the disease course. This article exemplifies the management of CIDP by a typical case study.

ABSTRACT

PREMISE: Floral scent, usually consisting of multiple compounds, is a complex trait, and its role in pollinator attraction has received increasing attention. However, disentangling the effect of individual floral scent compounds is difficult due to the complexity of isolating the effect of single compounds by traditional methods. METHODS: Using available quasi-isogenic lines (qILs) that were generated as part of the original mapping of the floral scent volatile-related loci CNL1 (benzaldehyde) and TPS2 (ß-ocimene) in Capsella, we generated four genotypes that should only differ in these two compounds. Plants of the four genotypes were introduced into a common garden outside the natural range of C. rubella or C. grandiflora, with individuals of a self-compatible C. grandiflora line as pollen donors, whose different genetic background facilitates the detection of outcrossing events. Visitors to flowers of all five genotypes were compared, and the seeds set during the common-garden period were collected for high-throughput amplicon-based sequencing to estimate their outcrossing rates. RESULTS: Benzaldehyde and ß-ocimene emissions were detected in the floral scent of corresponding genotypes. While some pollinator groups showed specific visitation preferences depending on scent compounds, the outcrossing rates in seeds did not vary among the four scent-manipulated genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: The scent-manipulated Capsella materials constructed using qILs provide a powerful system to study the ecological effects of individual floral scent compounds under largely natural environments. In Capsella, individual benzaldehyde and ß-ocimene emission may act as attractants for different types of pollinators.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we present the first genetic evidence of the phylogenetic position of Tarsius pumilus, the mountain tarsier of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This mysterious primate is the only Eastern tarsier species that occurs exclusively in cloud forests above 1800 m.a.s.l. It exhibits striking morphological peculiarities-most prominently its extremely reduced body size, which led to the common name of 'pygmy tarsier'. However, our results indicate that T. pumilus is not an aberrant form of a lowland tarsier, but in fact, the most basal of all Sulawesi tarsiers. Applying a Bayesian multi-locus coalescent approach, we dated the divergence between the T. pumilus lineage and the ancestor of all other extant Sulawesi tarsiers to 9.88 Mya. This is as deep as the split between the two other tarsier genera Carlito (Philippine tarsiers) and Cephalopachus (Western tarsiers), and predates further tarsier diversification on Sulawesi by around 7 Myr. The date coincides with the deepening of the marine environment between eastern and western Sulawesi, which likely led to allopatric speciation between T. pumilus or its predecessor in the west and the ancestor of all other Sulawesi tarsiers in the east. As the split preceded the emergence of permanent mountains in western Sulawesi, it is unlikely that the shift to montane habitat has driven the formation of the T. pumilus lineage.

ABSTRACT

The social organization of a group-living animal is defined by a balance between group dynamic events such as group formation, group dissolution, and dispersal events and group stability in membership and over time. Understanding these processes, which are relevant for questions ranging from disease transmission patterns to the evolution of polygyny, requires long-term monitoring of multiple social units over time. Because all great ape species are long-lived and elusive, the number of studies on these key aspects of social organization are limited, especially for western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). In this study, we used non-invasive genetic samples collected within an approximately 100 km2 area of Loango National Park, Gabon to reconstruct group compositions and changes in composition over more than a decade. We identified 98 gorillas and 11 mixed sex groups sampled during 2014-2017. Using published data from 85 individuals and 12 groups surveyed between 2005 and 2009 at the same locality, we tracked groups and individuals back in time. The identification of 11 silverbacks via parentage analyses and the genetic tracking of 39 individuals across studies allowed us to infer six group formations, five group dissolutions, and 40 dispersal events within 12 years. We also observed four groups persisting across the sampling periods with a maximum inferred existence of nearly 17 years and exhibiting variation in membership stability. Our results highlight the variation in composition and stability among groups of western lowland gorillas and illustrate the power of non-invasive genetic sampling for long-term monitoring.

We report the case of an infant with bromoderma caused by the use of syrup for abdominal colic containing calcium bromide. The lesions regressed after discontinuation of the drug.

Relata-se o caso de um paciente de dois anos de idade com malformação capilar extensa e mancha mongólica aberrante sem comprometimento sistêmico, manifestações que o incluem no tipo IIa na classificação da Facomatose Pigmentovascular, segundo Hasegawa.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: O forame oval (FO) tem extrema importância na circulação fetal, pois conduz o sangue oxigenado proveniente da placenta diretamente ao átrio esquerdo. Frequentemente fetos de mães diabéticas(FMD) apresentam hipertrofia miocárdica(HM), com alterações na função diastólica ventricular esquerda, podendo acarretar modificações do fluxo pelo FO, com reflexo no índice de pulsatilidade. Objetivo: Testar a hipótese de que o fluxo pelo FO apresenta índice de pulsatilidade maior em FMD com HM do que em fetos sem HM de mães com ou sem diabetes. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal controlado comparando FMD com HM com FMD sem hipertrofia e fetos controles normais. Pacientes: 16 FMD com HM(grupo I), 36 FMD sem HM(grupo II) e 39 fetos controles normais(grupo III), A ecocardiografia fetal com Doppler foi realizada para obter o índice de pulsatilidade do forame oval(IPFO), através da razão velocidade sistólica-velocidade pré-sistólica/velocidade média. Foram utilizados ANOVA e teste das diferenças mínimas significativas, com alfa crítico de 0,05. Resultados: O IPFO médio foi de 4,07 mais ou menos 1,33 no grupo I, 2,28 mais ou menos 0,58 no grupo II e 2,78 mais ou menos 0,55 no grupo III. Houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos (p menor 0,001); os valores de IPFO do grupo I foram significativamente maiores dos que o do grupo II e III (p menor 0,001). Os valores do IPFO do grupo II não foram significativamente diferentes em relação ao grupo III (p igual 0,604). Conclusão: Fetos de mães diabéticas com hipertrofia miocárdica têm o índice de pulsatilidade do fluxo do forame oval maior do que os fetos sem hipertrofia miocárdica e fetos controles normais. Sugere-se que sua diferença ocorra por uma complacência diminuída do ventriculo esquerdo secundária à hipertrofia do septo interventricular.
