ABSTRACT

Two cases occurred of early luteectomy/left cystectomy. In one case it resulted from a hemorrhagic corpus luteum at four weeks' gestation. In the second case it resulted from a left adnexectomy at five weeks from torsion of the adnexa. Histologic analysis defined the lesions as a hemorrhagic corpus luteum and necrotic ovary, respectively. Despite the lack of a corpus luteum and the absence of hormonal replacement therapy, both pregnancies developed normally, in the first case for 7 weeks, until it was terminated on the patient's request, and in the second case until 38 weeks, when a normal infant was delivered by cesarean section.

ABSTRACT

Prostaglandin E2 is a powerful oxytoxic agent that reliably initiates labor, even in the presence of an unripened cervix. The very low incidence of obstetric and neonatal side effects contributes to its universal use. Only nine cases of uterine rupture during the third trimester of pregnancy after application of various prostaglandin E2 preparations have been reported in English. Although uterine rupture after prostaglandin administration is a very rare complication, no prostaglandin compound seems to be exempt from it.

ABSTRACT

Prostaglandin E2 is a powerful oxytocic agent that reliably initiates labor, even in the presence of an unripe cervix. The low incidence of fetomaternal complication contributes to its universal use. We report a rare case of uterine rupture after intracervical application of prostaglandin E2 gel. Thus far no prostaglandin compound or method of administration seems to be exempt from such a complication.

ABSTRACT

We describe a rare case of ectopic placental tissue, presenting as a vaginal tumor during normal intra-uterine pregnancy. Its clinicopathological features, and its possible relation to placental site trophoblastic tumors are discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case to be reported in the English literature of such a lesion occurring at this site.

ABSTRACT

Hereditary protein C, a primary hypercoagulable state, has not been previously associated with preeclamptic toxemia. A woman with previous preeclamptic toxemia and fetal deaths presented with recurrent deep vein thrombosis during her third pregnancy. Hereditary protein C was diagnosed but full heparinization followed by low-dose heparin failed to prevent preeclamptic toxemia.

ABSTRACT

Serum lactic dehydrogenase (SLDH) activity was investigated in a group of 77 pregnant women at term with anemia of pregnancy (Hb under 10 g/dl), and in 61 cord blood samples of their newborns. 107 healthy pregnant women (Hb above 11 g/dl) and 62 cord blood samples from their newborns served as control. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups as for the SLDH activity. It is possible that the isoenzymes LDH 3 and LDH 4, which are probably of placental origin, are affected during pregnancy, but the study of these isoenzymes will make the subject of a future investigation.

ABSTRACT

In a group of 168 patients who presented with third-trimester bleeding, ultrasonographic placental localization did not provide either positive or negative false results concerning the placental site. In a group of 47 patients for whom an ultrasonographic diagnosis of placenta previa was established, an erroneous typing was done in 4 (8.5%). Of these four, one (2.1%) underwent an elective cesarean section instead of being allowed a vaginal trial of labor.
