ABSTRACT

Human body can digest only a few sugars with a low degree of polymerization. The rest of the carbohydrates become food for gastrointestinal symbiotic bacteria, affecting gut microbiota composition and human health. Adlay is a medicinal and food homologous crop. The study aims to determine whether dehulled adlay-derived polysaccharide regulates gut microbiota and barrier function to against Clostridioides difficile infection. Major molecular weight of adlay polysaccharide is 27 kDa. The growth of next-generation probiotics were promoted by adlay polysaccharides. In colonic fermentation model, the ratio of C. difficile was decreased when adding the condition medium of adlay polysaccharides-treated fecal microbiota. In addition, adlay polysaccharide promoted the expression of tight junction proteins and mucin in intestinal cells. This study shows that adlay polysaccharide can be used as prebiotics to regulate microbiota and maintain barrier function, which has the potential to be developed as novel functional food ingredients to protect intestinal health.

ABSTRACT

Diols are important platform chemicals with extensive industrial applications in biopolymer synthesis, cosmetics, and fuels. The increased dependence on non-renewable sources to meet the energy requirement of the population raised issues regarding fossil fuel depletion and environmental impacts. The utilization of biological methods for the synthesis of diols by utilizing renewable resources such as glycerol and agro-residual wastes gained attention worldwide because of its advantages. Among these, biotransformation of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) were extensively studied and at present, these diols are produced commercially in large scale with high yield. Many important isomers of C2-C4 diols lack natural synthetic pathways and development of chassis strains for the synthesis can be accomplished by adopting synthetic biology approaches. This current review depicts an overall idea about the pathways involved in C2-C4 diol production, metabolic intervention strategies and technologies in recent years.

ABSTRACT

Lignocellulosic wastes have the ability to be transformed into oligosaccharides and other value-added products. The synthesis of oligosaccharides from renewable sources bestow to growing bioeconomies. Oligosaccharides are synthesized chemically or biologically from agricultural residues. These oligosaccharides are functional food supplements that have a positive impact on humans and livestock. Non-digestible oligosaccharides, refered as prebiotics are beneficial for the colonic microbiota inhabiting the f the digestive system. These microbiota plays a crucial role in stimulating the host immune system and other physiological responses. The commonly known prebiotics, galactooligosaccharides (GOS), xylooligosaccharides (XOS), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), mannanooligosaccharides (MOS), and isomaltooligosaccharides (IOS) are synthesized either through enzymatic or whole cell-mediated approaches using natural or agricultural waste substrates. This review focusses on recent advancements in biological processes, for the synthesis of oligosaccharides using renewable resources (lignocellulosic substrates) for sustainable circular bioeconomy. The work also addresses the limitations associated with the processes and commercialization of the products.
