ABSTRACT

Review of the effects of a normal mammogram on the treatment of 36 women with palpable breast carcinomas during a two-year period showed that 17 patients had biopsies performed within two months of their normal mammograms and 19 patients had biopsies delayed for three to 24 months. Of the 17 who had biopsies within one month of a normal mammogram, three (17.6%) had extension of disease to axillary nodes. Of 19 patients whose biopsy was delayed, cancer was found in axillary nodes of 11 (57.9%). Normal mammograms should not preclude biopsy of a breast mass.

ABSTRACT

Record on a case of collagen disease with pure red cell anemia and perimembraneous glomerulonephritis. The direct antiglobulin tests with anti-IgG and anti-kappaserum were positive as were the tests on antinuclear serum-antibodies. During therapy with fluocortolon and azathioprin the anemia remitted completely even when therapy was stopped. The antiglobulin tests became negative, the glomerulitis remained active, there was no deterioration of renal function.

ABSTRACT

This report includes 31 patients who developed a perimembranous glomerulonephritis generally 7 months after the onset of the treatment of various illnesses with D-Penicillamine. In all cases the patients had a proteinuria, associated with a hematuria in 12 cases. After the treatment was stopped 8 patients rapidly developed a nephrotic syndrome, while its onset was more gradual in 12 other patients. 5 patients initially with a nephrotic syndrome had no proteinuria at the time of a second biopsy made up to 12 months later. In these 5 cases the typical changes of perimembranous glomerulonephritis observed on electron microscopy were much reduced in the second biopsy.

ABSTRACT

Nineteen patients underwent hepatic artery ligation for metastatic cancer of the liver. Metastases were from colon cancer in 13 and from other primary cancers in 6. Postoperative chemotherapy was given to 15 by the systemic route, and to 1 by infusion into the ligated hepatic artery. Sixteen patients survived the procedure. In these patients, the mean survival of those with metastases from colon cancer was 27+ (5-72) weeks, and from other cancer 50+ (8-23) weeks. Among the patients evaluated, 57% had symptomatic improvement, 43% showed improvement in the liver scan, and 33% had a decrease in liver size. Our experience suggests that hepatic artery ligation can offer temporary but significant palliation in carefully selected patients.
