ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Video games have become a prevalent source of entertainment, especially among children. Furthermore, the amount of time spent playing video games has grown dramatically. The purpose of this research was to examine the mediation effects of attention and child memory on the relationship between video games addiction and cognitive and learning abilities in Egyptian children. METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was used in the current study in two schools affiliated with Dakahlia District, Egypt. The study included 169 children aged 9 to 13 who met the inclusion criteria, and their mothers provided the questionnaire responses. The data collection methods were performed over approximately four months from February to May. Data were collected using different tools: Socio-demographic Interview, Game Addiction Scale for Children (GASC), Children's Memory Questionnaire (CMQ), Clinical Attention Problems Scale, Learning, Executive, and Attention Functioning (LEAF) Scale. RESULTS: There was a significant indirect effect of video game addiction on cognitive and learning skills through attention, but not child memory. Video game addiction has a significant impact on children's attention and memory. Both attention and memory have a significant impact on a child's cognitive and learning skills. CONCLUSIONS: These results revealed the significant effect of video game addiction on cognitive and learning abilities in the presence of mediators. It also suggested that attention-focused therapies might play an important role in minimizing the harmful effects of video game addiction on cognitive and learning abilities.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a global health concern, particularly in the geriatric population. The increasing number of hospital admissions among older individuals highlights the need for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, to understand and treat geriatric depression. Nurses play a crucial role in caring for older adults with depressive symptoms or depression. This study aimed to assess knowledge and attitudes regarding geriatric depression among primary care nurses in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 210 primary healthcare nurses in Jazan City using a validated self-administered questionnaire. Knowledge scores were measured and compared among selected demographic variables as well as attitudes toward geriatric depression. Data obtained were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version. 20.0. Chi-square test, fisher's exact test were used for comparison of variables with categorical data. Most primary care nurses were interested in caring for older patients with depression; however, they never attended training courses focused on geriatric depression. Where the study indicated that 38.1% of participants have poor knowledge about geriatric depression while 25.2% have good knowledge. Where the majority had a high understanding of the potential side effects of antidepressant medications, while they had limited knowledge about symptoms, diagnosis, and medications, the majority of participants demonstrated a positive attitude regarding feeling comfortable dealing with depressed patients' needs (56.7%) and considered their profession as a well-placed to assist patients (83.3%) However, 15.2% had a negative attitude citing a lack of self-discipline and willpower.


La dépression est un problème de santé mondial, en particulier dans la population gériatrique. Le nombre croissant d'hospitalisations chez les personnes âgées met en évidence la nécessité pour les professionnels de santé, en particulier les infirmières, de comprendre et de traiter la dépression gériatrique. Les infirmières jouent un rôle crucial dans la prise en charge des personnes âgées présentant des symptômes dépressifs ou une dépression. Cette étude visait à évaluer les connaissances et les attitudes concernant la dépression gériatrique parmi les infirmières de soins primaires de la région de Jazan, en Arabie Saoudite. Une étude transversale a été menée auprès de 210 infirmières de soins primaires de la ville de Jazan à l'aide d'un questionnaire auto-administré validé. Les scores de connaissances ont été mesurés et comparés parmi certaines variables démographiques ainsi que les attitudes à l'égard de la dépression gériatrique. Les données obtenues ont été analysées à l'aide du progiciel statistique pour les sciences sociales, version. 20,0. Le test du Chi carré et le test exact de Fisher ont été utilisés pour comparer les variables avec les données catégorielles. La plupart des infirmières de soins primaires souhaitaient soigner des patients âgés souffrant de dépression ; cependant, ils n'ont jamais suivi de formation axée sur la dépression gériatrique. L'étude indique que 38,1 % des participants ont de mauvaises connaissances sur la dépression gériatrique tandis que 25,2 % ont de bonnes connaissances. Alors que la majorité des participants avaient une bonne compréhension des effets secondaires potentiels des médicaments antidépresseurs, alors qu'ils avaient une connaissance limitée des symptômes, du diagnostic et des médicaments, la majorité des participants ont démontré une attitude positive et se sentaient à l'aise pour répondre aux besoins des patients déprimés (56,7 %). et considéraient leur profession comme bien placée pour assister les patients (83,3 %). Toutefois, 15,2 % avaient une attitude négative citant un manque d'autodiscipline et de volonté.

Understanding nursing students' attitudes toward Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is pivotal because it may impact the care and support, they provide victims. This study aimed to explore nursing students' attitudes toward intimate partner violence and its relationship with self-esteem and self-efficacy. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was used in the current study in the faculty of nursing at Mansoura University, Egypt. A total of 1322 nursing students participated in the study. Data were collected from April to June 2023 by using various tools: sociodemographic interviews and academic data profiles, the Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale (IPVAS)-Revised, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE) (Arabic version), and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: The findings show the distribution of the Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale (IPVAS), with 78.7% of nursing students disapproving of the abuse domain, 72.6% (approving of the violence domain) and 34.2% approving of the control domain. 65.8% had a moderate level of self-esteem, and 62.8% had a low level of self-efficacy. The study concluded that self-esteem and self-efficacy are significant in shaping attitudes toward intimate partner violence; higher levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy are associated with lower approval for intimate partner violence. Further research is needed to explore the factors that contribute to attitudes and levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy among nursing students. It would also be useful to study how education and training affect these attitudes.

ABSTRACT

Facebook has grown to be one of the most widely used communication platforms. A new condition linked with widespread use has emerged with its expanding popularity: Facebook addiction. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used in the current study, in two randomly selected villages (Elmanial and Batra) and one town (Talkha city) affiliated with Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt. Data were collected from women only through using a self-administered socio-demographic questionnaire, Facebook addiction scale, Beck depression inventory-II, and emotional regulation scale. The study found 83.7% of the studied women reported moderate emotional regulation; 27.9% had moderate Facebook addiction, and 23.9% reported mild depression. The study concluded there was a significant negative correlation between Facebook addiction and emotional regulation.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to assess the emotional intelligence in relation to socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with depressive disorders. A descriptive correlational study was utilized with a sample of (106) depressed patients who were diagnosed by a psychiatrist with depressive disorders at psychiatric outpatient clinics in Mansoura University Hospital. Data were collected through assessing socio demographic and clinical characteristics, assessing level of depression using Beck Depression Inventory BDI-II, and assessing emotional intelligence using Barchard emotional intelligence scales. Results revealed that emotional intelligence not related significantly to socio demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with depressive disorders, there is a highly significant relationship between emotional intelligence in relation to level of depression and other practices used to alleviate depression. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a periodical workshops and training programs for adolescents and young in the universities, schools, social clubs, camps and youth organizations to enhance their emotional intelligence in order to prevent depression. In addition, assessing the effect of emotional intelligence programs on preventing and managing depression.
