ABSTRACT

Herein, poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/ poly (styrene sulfonic acid) sodium salt (PSS) microcapsules of (PAH/PSS)2PAH (P2P MCs) and (PAH/PSS)2 (P2 MCs) were obtained by a layer-by-layer method. The P2 MCs show high adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B (642.26 mg/g) and methylene blue (909.25 mg/g), with an extremely low equilibrium adsorption time (~20 min). The P2P MCs exhibited high adsorption capacities of reactive orange K-G (ROKG) and direct yellow 5G (DY5G) which were 404.79 and 451.56 mg/g. Adsorption processes of all dyes onto microcapsules were best described by the Langmuir isotherm model and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, the P2P MCs loaded with reactive dyes (P2P-ROKG), could further adsorb rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and P2 MCs that had adsorbed cationic MB dyes could also be used for secondary adsorption treatment of direct dye waste-water, respectively. The present work confirmed that P2P and P2 MCs were expected to become an excellent adsorbent in the water treatment industry.

ABSTRACT

In this study, metalloanthocyanin-inspired, biodegradable packaging films were developed by incorporating purple cauliflower extracted (PCE) anthocyanins into alginate (AL)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) hybrid polymer matrices based on complexation of metal ions with these marine polysaccharides and anthocyanins. PCE anthocyanins-incorporated AL/CCS films were further modified with fucoidan (FD) because this sulfated polysaccharide can form strong interactions with anthocyanins. Metals-involved complexation (Ca2+ and Zn2+-crosslinked films) improved the mechanical strength and water vapor permeability but reduced the swelling degree of the films. Zn2+-cross-linked films exhibited significantly higher antibacterial activity than did pristine (non-crosslinked) and Ca2+-cross-linked films. The metal ion/polysaccharide-involved complexation with anthocyanin reduced the release rate of anthocyanins, increased the storage stability and antioxidant capability, and improved the sensitivity of the colorimetric response of the indicator films for monitoring the freshness of shrimp. The anthocyanin-metal-polysaccharide complex film showed great potential as active and intelligent packaging of food products.

ABSTRACT

Detection methods for microbiological aerosols based on single particle mass spectrometry (SPAMS) and a fluorescent aerosol particle sizer (FLAPS) have been developed progressively. However, they encounter interference and inefficiency issues. By merging FLAPS and SPAMS technologies, the majority of inorganic ambient aerosols may be eliminated by the FLAPS, thus resolving SPAMS' large data volume. SPAMS, on the other hand, may eliminate the secondary fluorescence interference that plagues the FLAPS. With the addition of the enhanced machine learning classifier, it is possible to extract microbial aerosol signals more precisely. In this work, a FLAPS-SPAMS instrument and a Random Forest classifier based on Kendall's correlation expansion training set approach were built. In addition to analyzing the outdoor microbial proportions, the interference components of non-microbial fluorescent particles were also examined. Results indicate that the fraction of outdoor microbial aerosols in fluorescent particles is 25.72% or roughly 2.57% of total particles. Traditional ART-2A algorithm and semi-empirical feature clustering approaches were used to identify the interference categories of abiotic fluorescent particles, which were mostly constituted of EC/OC, LPG/LNG exhaust, heavy metal organics, nicotine, vinylpyridine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polymers, accounting for 68.51% of fluorescent particles.

ABSTRACT

In this study, polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes were fabricated via interfacial polymerization on cellulose acetate (CA)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) support layers. Several types of CA/PVDF supports were prepared via the phase inversion method. With increasing CA, the PVDF membrane surface pore size decreased and hydrophilicity increased. The effect of the support properties on the performance and formation mechanism of PA films was systematically investigated via an interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The permselectivity of the resulting TFC membranes was evaluated using a MgSO4 solution. The results show that the desired polyamide TFC membrane exhibited excellent water flux (6.56 L/(m2·h·bar)) and bivalent salt ion rejection (>97%). One aim of this study is to explore how the support of CA/PVDF influences the IP process and the performance of PA film.

ABSTRACT

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug used for mental disorders. There are limited studies providing sufficient pharmacokinetic data, thus the variability of concentrations of olanzapine used in Chinese paediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years remains to be evaluated. METHODS: Therapeutic drug monitoring data were collected from 151 paediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years who received olanzapine. The model was developed with a NONMEM software program. The final model validation and evaluation were assessed by bootstrap, diagnostic scatter plots, and normalized prediction distribution error (NPDE). Regimens of different dosages were simulated to reach the target concentration levels of 20 ng/ml, by using the final model with typical parameters. RESULTS: The one-compartment model was considered the best fit for the data. Typical estimates of the absorption rate constant (Ka), apparent clearance (CL/F), and apparent distribution volume (V/F) in the final model were 0.142 h-1 , 15.4 L/h, and 322 L, respectively. Sex and concomitant valproate (VPA) were included as significant predictors of olanzapine clearance, which was described by the following equation: CL/F = 15.4 × (1 + 0.546 × SEX) × (1 + 0.264 × VPA). Results of Monte-Carlo simulation suggested that male paediatric patients with concomitant VPA were advised to take no less than 15 mg per day of olanzapine orally, and in female paediatric patients with concomitant VPA, a dosing regimen of 10 mg may be sufficient to achieve the therapeutic range of olanzapine. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Our results identified concomitant valproate and sex as significant covariates in olanzapine population pharmacokinetics. Our model may be a useful tool for recommending dosage adjustments for physicians. The pharmacokinetics of olanzapine in patients aged 10 to 17 years was generally similar to that of adults and the elderly.

ABSTRACT

Under climate change, compound flooding has resulted in severe disasters in coastal areas around the world. In this study, an integrated framework is proposed to determine the range of compound flood risk without the requirement of joint probability analysis between storm surge and rainfall. In the framework, the flood risks are analyzed under four extreme scenarios with/without the compound effect of storm surge and rainfall in the past and the future. From the end of the 20th century to the middle of the 21st century, the worst scenario shows that the flood area significantly increases by 92% for the low-lying coastal areas in southwest Taiwan under the compound effect of storm surge and rainfall if they are fully correlated. In the most optimistic scenario, the flood area slightly increases by 15% without compound effect (only storm surge is considered). To coastal flooding, the synchronization of storm surge and rainfall contributes much more than the climate-induced amplification of individual factors. When storm surge and rainfall happen at the same time, the extent and duration of flooding increase simultaneously under the influence of pluvial and surge-induced flooding. Risk analysis shows an obvious increase of risk level for villages originally at low risks, which require integrated countermeasures against the consequence brought by compound flooding in the future. The framework can be applied in other low-lying coastal areas to quantify the potential impacts on human and environment caused by compound flooding under climate change.

ABSTRACT

Mask-free direct printing can alleviate the high cost and high consumption involved in photo-lithography for chip processing. Most of their technical routes are based on the traditional short focal length nozzles, which is suffered from higher probability of nozzle retardation or clogging as well as the higher mechanical burdens. While aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) has better deposition adaptability but usually lack of focused printing. In this study, a system that combines of long focal length ALS with AACVD, so called AAFCVD printing system has been developed. The single-point printing capability and aerosol precursor adaptability were verified, and the relationship between the single spot printing performance and the chemical reaction mechanisms were studied. Furthermore, a unique carbon injection effect brought by ALS was discovered. Finally, the linear graphics printing performances of the system were evaluated. This system is expected to become a new generation of high-performance mask-free printing system for chip manufacturing.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To investigate and compare the clinical and imaging features among family members infected with COVID-19. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a total of 34 COVID-19 cases (15 male, 19 female, aged 48 ± 16 years, ranging from 10 to 81 years) from 13 families from January 17, 2020 through February 15, 2020. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 - part of the family members (first-generation) who had exposure history and others (second-generation) infected through them, and Group 2 - patients from the same family having identical exposure history. We collected clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) features for each patient. Comparison tests were performed between the first- and second-generation patients in Group 1. RESULTS: In total there were 21 patients in Group 1 and 20 patients in Group 2. For Group 1, first-generation patients had significantly higher white blood cell count (6.5 × 109/L (interquartile range (IQR): 4.9-9.2 × 109/L) vs 4.5 × 109/L (IQR: 3.7-5.3 × 109/L); P = 0.0265), higher neutrophil count (4.9 × 109/L (IQR: 3.6-7.3 × 109/L) vs 2.9 × 109/L (IQR: 2.1-3.3 × 109/L); P = 0.0111), and higher severity scores on HRCT (3.9 ± 2.4 vs 2.0 ± 1.3, P = 0.0362) than the second-generation patients. Associated underlying diseases (odds ratio, 8.0, 95% confidence interval: 3.4-18.7, P = 0.0013) were significantly correlated with radiologic severity scores in second-generation patients. CONCLUSION: Analysis of the family cluster cases suggests that COVID-19 had no age or sex predominance. Secondarily infected patients in a family tended to develop milder illness, but this was not true for those with existing comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

Fibrillar materials have gained much attention recently because of their unique properties and potential applications. Although many methods have been developed to fabricate materials, it remains challenging to prepare fibrillar materials containing multicomponent materials or even with complex structures. Here, a facile strategy is developed to fabricate bamboo-shaped fibers by treating electrospun polymer core-shell fibers with solvent vapor annealing. Electrospun polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) core-shell fibers are first prepared by electrospinning PS/PMMA blend solutions via a phase separation process. When the PS/PMMA core-shell fibers are annealed with the vapor of cyclohexane, which swells and delocalizes the PS domains selectively, the fibers transform into bamboo-shaped structures. The bamboo-shaped structures can be further examined by swelling and delocalizing the PMMA domains selectively, revealing the undulated PS structures. The thermal insulation properties of the fibers with bamboo-shaped structures are observed to be enhanced compared with the original polymer core-shell fibers.

ABSTRACT

Delay-coordinate mapping is an effective and widely used technique for reconstructing and analyzing the dynamics of a nonlinear system based on time-series outputs. The efficacy of delay-coordinate mapping has long been supported by Takens' embedding theorem, which guarantees that delay-coordinate maps use the time-series output to provide a reconstruction of the hidden state space that is a one-to-one embedding of the system's attractor. While this topological guarantee ensures that distinct points in the reconstruction correspond to distinct points in the original state space, it does not characterize the quality of this embedding or illuminate how the specific parameters affect the reconstruction. In this paper, we extend Takens' result by establishing conditions under which delay-coordinate mapping is guaranteed to provide a stable embedding of a system's attractor. Beyond only preserving the attractor topology, a stable embedding preserves the attractor geometry by ensuring that distances between points in the state space are approximately preserved. In particular, we find that delay-coordinate mapping stably embeds an attractor of a dynamical system if the stable rank of the system is large enough to be proportional to the dimension of the attractor. The stable rank reflects the relation between the sampling interval and the number of delays in delay-coordinate mapping. Our theoretical findings give guidance to choosing system parameters, echoing the tradeoff between irrelevancy and redundancy that has been heuristically investigated in the literature. Our initial result is stated for attractors that are smooth submanifolds of Euclidean space, with extensions provided for the case of strange attractors.

ABSTRACT

A quadrupole electric field-mediated exfoliation method is proposed to convert micron-sized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powder into few-layer hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS). Under optimum conditions (400 Hz, 40 V, 32 µg ml-1, sodium deoxycholate, TAE medium), the h-BN powders (thickness >200 nm, horizontal scale ∼10 µm) are successfully exfoliated into 0.5-4 nm (1-10 layers) thick h-BNNS with the same horizontal scale. Dynamic laser scattering and atomic force microscope data show that the yield is 47.6% (for the portion with the thickness of 0.5-6 nm), and all of the vertical sizes are reduced to smaller than 18 nm (45 layers).

ABSTRACT

A new species of Paracleistostoma De Man, 1895, P. meilanense n. sp. is reported from mangroves forests in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. The new species inhabits mud burrows in the upper intertidal zone and is sympatric with P. tomentosa Yang & Sun, 1993, and P. depressum De Man, 1895. The slender chelipeds as well as the characteristic morphology of the male first pleopod easily distinguishes the species from congeners.

ABSTRACT

The cph1/cph1 efg1/efg1 double mutant in Candida albicans is defective in filamentous growth and is avirulent in a mouse model. We previously reported that Efg1p but not Cph1p is involved in drug resistance by negatively regulating ERG3 in C. albicans. In the current study, we have found that overexpression of CPH1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae increases susceptibility to the antifungal drug fluconazole. Furthermore, in C. albicans, null mutation of CPH1 increased the expression of MDR1 as well as decreased susceptibility to fluconazole and voriconazole but not to amphotericin B. These findings indicate that although Efg1p and Cph1p may have the same effects on virulence, they have opposite effects on drug resistance in C. albicans.

ABSTRACT

Cortical networks are hypothesized to rely on transient network activity to support short-term memory (STM). In this letter, we study the capacity of randomly connected recurrent linear networks for performing STM when the input signals are approximately sparse in some basis. We leverage results from compressed sensing to provide rigorous nonasymptotic recovery guarantees, quantifying the impact of the input sparsity level, the input sparsity basis, and the network characteristics on the system capacity. Our analysis demonstrates that network memory capacities can scale superlinearly with the number of nodes and in some situations can achieve STM capacities that are much larger than the network size. We provide perfect recovery guarantees for finite sequences and recovery bounds for infinite sequences. The latter analysis predicts that network STM systems may have an optimal recovery length that balances errors due to omission and recall mistakes. Furthermore, we show that the conditions yielding optimal STM capacity can be embodied in several network topologies, including networks with sparse or dense connectivities.

ABSTRACT

Aiming at the spectral distortion produced in PCA fusion process, the present paper proposes an improved low spectral distortion PCA fusion method. This method uses NCUT (normalized cut) image segmentation algorithm to make a complex hyperspectral remote sensing image into multiple sub-images for increasing the separability of samples, which can weaken the spectral distortions of traditional PCA fusion; Pixels similarity weighting matrix and masks were produced by using graph theory and clustering theory. These masks are used to cut the hyperspectral image and high-resolution image into some sub-region objects. All corresponding sub-region objects between the hyperspectral image and high-resolution image are fused by using PCA method, and all sub-regional integration results are spliced together to produce a new image. In the experiment, Hyperion hyperspectral data and Rapid Eye data were used. And the experiment result shows that the proposed method has the same ability to enhance spatial resolution and greater ability to improve spectral fidelity performance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitatively the effectiveness and feasibility of the modified supracrestal fiberotomy (MSF) and the contact point reproximation (CPR) in decreasing the relapse of anterior segments rotating and/or crowding after orthodontic treatment. METHODS: A total of 129 patients with crowding and/or rotated anterior teeth were selected for this study, and the average age was 13.07 years (54 males, 75 females). The modified supracrestal fiberotomy was performed on the anterior segments of patients in the experimental group (48 cases). After the anterior teeth were aligned, 23 of the 48 cases received a further treatment of the contact point reproximation on the anterior segments (the subgroup of MSF + CPR), and the other 25 subjects did not receive this treatment (the subgroup of MSF). The control group consisted of 81 cases. All cases wore Hawley retainers for 1.8 to 2.3 years, and all the patients were revisited 2.4 years postretention. The maxillary and mandibular dental models of all the patients were taken before treatment (T1), at the end of the treatment (T2) and 2.4 years postretention (T3). RESULTS: The relapse rate in the experimental group [(T3-T2)/T1 x 100%] was 21.6%, lower than that in the control group (P < 0.001). The relapse rate of mandible in the subgroup of MSF + CPR was 6.56% lower than that of the subgroup of MSF (P < 0.05). But the relapse rate of maxillary in the subgroups of MSF + CPR was similar as that of the subgroup of MSF (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The modified supracrestal fiberotomy can effectively alleviate relapse after orthodontic treatment of the crowding and/or rotation of anterior teeth. The treatment combining MSF and CPR can help maintain the stability of post-retention of mandibular anterior teeth.
