ABSTRACT

A new type of single-unit polarizing beam-splitting prism is proposed based on negative refraction and total internal reflection in uniaxial crystals. The performance of the proposed design is studied theoretically and experimentally using a calcite prism. The results indicate that the single-unit negative refraction polarization-splitting prism can yield a maximum splitting angle of 19.5° (for an incident light wavelength of 633 nm), whereby the splitting angle is insensitive to changes in the incidence angle. The proposed structure exhibits good stability and reliability. The design is beneficial to application in special working environments involving intense vibration and increased radiation.

ABSTRACT

We propose to use the wavelet transform and Kalman filter methods for processing noise in δ13CO2 measurement using laser absorption spectroscopy at 2.008 µm and they have been shown to be useful tool for reducing the intrinsic noise of the optical system. Through the performance comparison and analysis of these two denoising techniques for the intrinsic noise reduction of optical system, it can be found that the Kalman filter is a more suitable approach for the extraction of gas isotope measurement signal from a contaminated signal.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the novel europium (IIl) complex of the form [Eu(tta)4 . DEASPI], the sensitization of lanthanide luminescence is via functional cation The photophysical sensitization process of Eu(tta)4 . DEASPI involves an energy transfer from charge transfer excited state of hemicyanine (aminostyrylpyridinium) cation, and the sensitization mechanism follows Förster resonance energy mechanism. The solvent effect on this new kind of europium (III) complex was investigated in the present work. The europium (III) complex was dissolved in a variety of solvents, i.e., acetone, DMF, ethanol and acetonitrile, and the emission intensity of europium (III) complex in acetonitrile is much higher than in other solvents. The detailed discussion about solvent effect is provided in this paper.

ABSTRACT

Based on the Fermat's principle, the universal theory of refraction and reflection of extraordinary rays (e-rays) in the uniaxial crystal is formulated. Using this theory, a new unit structure prism is designed, and its properties are studied. Based on the theoretical results, such a prism is achieved experimentally by using the Iceland crystal. In both theoretical and experimental studies, this new prism shows excellent polarization splitting performances such as big and adjustable splitting angle, comparing to the conventional Rochon prism. For the sample prism with the optical axis angle of 45°, the splitting angle reaches 19.8°in the normal incidence, and the maximum splitting angle reaches 28.44° while the incidence angle is -4°.

ABSTRACT

The optical axis is one of the most important parameters in the application of wave plates. In the transmission mode of spectroscopic ellipsometer, taking the advantage of Jones matrix to analyse the phase difference of P and S directions in the process of spinning wave plate, a new method for the determination of optical axis of quartz wave plate was designed. The method has characteristics of simple light path structure and high efficiency in the judging of the optical axis, and this method thus got a good practicability.

ABSTRACT

In order to get the precision measurement of birefringence of quartz crystal at the communication wavelength 1310nm, based on the principle of precision measurement of phase difference between P and S polarized lights of spectroscopic ellipsometer, a method for precision measurement of birefringence of crystal was designed through the analysis of the Jones matrix under the transmission mode, and the precision measurement of birefringence of quartz crystal at 1 310 nm at room temperature (22 degrees C) was made, the measuring results and error analysis show that the precision reached 10(-6) level, this is the most precise birefringence parameter available, and it is of important significance for the improvement of designing precision of phase retardation devices of quartz.

ABSTRACT

Optical waveguides were fabricated in neodymium-doped silicate glass by using a low-repetition-rate (1 kHz) femtosecond laser inscription. Two different types of waveguide structure are fabricated. In the first, guiding occurs in the focal spot. In the second, guiding occurs in the region between the two filaments. The near-field intensity distribution, propagation loss, index profile reconstruction, and calculation of the modal intensity distribution by the beam propagation method of these waveguides are presented. On the basis of near-field intensity distribution of the light guided through the waveguides and the propagation loss measurement, the optimum writing conditions such as the pulse energy and scan velocity were determined. The waveguide written with 2.2 µJ pulse energy and 50 µm/s scan velocity shows strong guidance at 632.8 nm, with an index contrast of 7 × 10(-4) and a propagation loss of ~0.8 dB/cm.

ABSTRACT

A new method for the determination of fast axis of wave-plate is introduced. Based on the principle of electro-optic phase compensation in the wave-plate phase measuring method, the relation between the polarization extinction system out-put signal and the modulating signal can be acquired through the composition of frequency fixed alternating voltage modulation signal. Through the analysis of this process with Jones matrix, the out-put signal was usually found to be the composition of fundamental frequency and second harmonic frequency, the composition signal reflects the axis information as well as the phase information of the wave-plate, and this phenomenon has never been noticed before. Through the analysis of this phenomenon, the transformation trends of the composed wave-form by rotating of wave-plates with different orientations were deduced, and through the observation of the transformation trend, one can easily distinguish the fast and slow axes of wave-plates with phase retardation > pi as well as those with phase retardation < pi, and their phenomena are reverse to each other.
